THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
Temple’s famous fish the Double Row Linear has been landed at its heaviest ever reported weight, just short of 40 lb.
Terry Baker landed the big mirror carp, which went 39 lb, along with a 31 lb 14 oz common and two upper-20s for an impressive 126 lb 15 oz four-fish total.
The bream sport hit new heights this week with a 103 lb match catch, despite 30-degree heat.
Malcolm Heaver won the Matchfishing-scene contest with 35 fish to 5 lb, spread out in three big keepnets, showing what can be achieved during even the hardest part of the day.
Also caught in the same match was one of the Old Lake’s rare, big crucian carp, this one weighing 3 lb.
Famous carper Ian Russell banked over 70 Old Lake carp in 48 hours with a well-known helper, as part of his Pro Celebrity Challenge.
Bonds Lake continues to produce good catches, the best reported this week being 12 carp to 16 lb on feeder and pellets.
And details of the annual 24-hour carp match have been announced, to take place on the last weekend of this month, to coincide with the Prudential RideLondon cycling event, which involves the closure of the main road outside the fishery for a few hours.
The forecast suggests that it could be a degree or two cooler this week, with more cloud and the chance of some light drizzle, but then building up to back near to where it was again for next weekend. The average looks likely to be 23, having been 29 on Sunday, but reaching 25 by Saturday, which should be the sunniest day of the week. Monday should give a high of 27 with a mixture of sunshine and cloud, and similar for Tuesday but with a high of 21. Wednesday is likely to be cloudier still and 22, followed by a bit more sunshine on Thursday and 23, more sunshine again and 24 on Friday, and a very sunny 25 on Saturday and Sunday. Overnight values should remain constant at around 14 or 15. Winds should start lightish and north-westerly on Monday, but returning to the north-easterlies of last weekend on Tuesday evening, with a bit more strength, before becoming lighter again and from the same direction on Wednesday until Friday, when they should become a bit more south-easterly into the weekend.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

Every year when the weather warms, pleasure anglers on the Old Lake manage to land over 100 lb of bream.
But to do it in a match, and in 30-degree heat, shows the standard of sport that is on offer on the Old Lake.
Malcolm Heaver won the Matchfishing-scene contest, the first of a summer series, with 35 bream from peg 38, on the Long Bank, using a feeder, ahead of next-peg Keith Hogg on 37 with 86 lb.
Keith began on feeder but switched to pole, catching on corn over a bed of pellets.
John Swann was third with 64 lb of bream and two 4 lb tench on cage feeder at 30 reel turns, with Mark Hathway fourth on peg 14 with 26 smaller bream and skimmers for 47 lb.
Another Old Lake match to produce the goods was the Crystal Palace AA contest on the Front Bank, which was won by Mike Bell with 84 lb 14 oz of fish to 5 lb from peg 11, on feeder and 8 mm pellets with 8 mm fluoro dumbells.
Runner-up was Steve Parker with 75 lb of bream, carp and tench from peg 1, ahead of Steve Edwards with 68 lb from peg 3, the lowest weight being 30 lb.
And among the fish caught was a rare 3 lb crucian, which came from peg 9.
Famous carper Ian Russell staged his Pro Celebrity Challenge and shared a catch of over 70 carp with his celebrity assistant in 48 hours, despite high temperatures.
So hectic was the action that the celebrity guest reeled in at midnight on both nights to get some sleep.
A video should be available shortly showing the pair’s busy session.
Specimen Carp Club members Adam Rogers, Dan Nash and Matt Lewis, with guest Nick Driver, shared a catch of 435 lb of carp in 48 hours from the middle of the Front Bank, along with lots of bream.
Adam landed the most, at 220 lb, and the best fish weighed 17 lb 8 oz, the best bait being double 18 mm Mainline Cell over free offerings.
And Matt Gegg had three carp to 19 lb on a daytime session at peg 1, freelining luncheon meat over corn.
There were also reports of good catches in the daytime from the Bay, with several fish landed during a short session.
This summer’s 24-hour Pairs Carp Match, fished by 12 teams, is on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29.
The draw will take place at 5pm on the Saturday, with fishing from 7pm until 6pm on Sunday.
Entry costs £100 per pair, payable on booking, and if 12 teams take part, the winners will collect £300, with £150 for second and £100 for third, £50 going to the captor of the biggest fish. Optional pools of £25 will be available.
Pegs will be drawn as pairs of numbers, giving one favoured swim and one lesser one, as in past years, to ensure even distribution of hotspots. Pairs can decide which angler will fish which of the two swims drawn.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

The Double Row Linear has been increasing in weight steadily in recent years, from 35 lb in April 2015, and the most recent reported capture was in late March this year by Conor Cook at 38 lb 4 oz.
Now the distinctive fish has been landed by Terry Baker at 39 lb, making it another contender for a ‘forty’, along with past ‘forties’ Nemo and The Ghost, and The Big One at 38 lb along with several similar sized commons.
Terry had the Lin as part of a four-carp catch weighing 126 lb 15 oz, the others being a 31 lb 4 oz common and mirrors of 28 lb 7 oz and 28 lb 4 oz.
His fish came after a complete change of tactics and a move to the opposite side of the lake, steadily building up a feeding area and fishing a new Active Bait Solutions test bait.
John Mason (who describes himself as “Terry Baker’s chauffeur”) was also in action on Temple, landing a brace of ‘twenties’, at 23 lb 14 oz and 23 lb 12 oz, the mirror and common coming from the margins of pegs 1 and 7, also on a new Active Bait Solutions test bait.
There are also reports coming through of ‘twenties’ for Matt White and another angler, more information to follow.

BONDS LAKE

This is a great time to grab yourself a slice of the action on Bonds, which regularly produces multiple catches of carp to double figures on a variety of methods, from pole to feeder and straight lead to waggler.

Roland Racz landed 12 carp to 16 lb at peg 8 on feeder and 8 mm pellets, and there were other multiple catches of fish to double figures.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake comes into its own at this time of year for tench, bream and crucians, along with a few bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach.

Milton Lake regular Alan Derbyshire had a catch of eight tench to 4 lb and eight crucians at peg 2, on float fished pellets and prawns, loosefeeding pellets and small balls of groundbait.
