THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
The 24-hour Carp Pairs Match was one of the most successful in recent years, despite a big change in the weather during the contest.
The nine pairs landed 44 fish for 590 lb, winners Adam Bennet and Phil Middleton having 13 fish for 170 lb 8 oz.
The Old Lake bream fishing is as good as it has been all season, and that is in a year when some amazing catches have been made.
This week pleasure fishing matchman Brian Spiking had over 50 fish to 5 lb in his session, half on feeder and half on pole, and reported that they were hungry for groundbait and pellets.
Temple Lake’s famous resident Friar Tuck was landed again, at the same weight of 32 lb 4 oz, by Jason Ostler, and there were other ‘twenties’ to 26 lb.
While back on the Old Lake a mobile approach provided Craig Lancashire with an entertaining session of seven carp to 20 lb, fishing close to various platforms using bread.
The heatwave looks set to continue for a couple more days, before a dramatic drop in temperature on Wednesday of 7 or 8 degrees C. Sunday’s cloudless high of 27 degrees is likely to rise to 29 on Monday with blue skies all day, and then 28 on Tuesday, when cloud is likely to form in the evening that could produce showers. This is expected to lead to Wednesday being a day of temperatures in the teens, maybe reaching 21 at best, though staying dry, and then similar values on Thursday but with afternoon showers, and more of the same on Friday with no more than 20 degrees. Saturday looks like being another day of sunshine and showers with a high of 20, and Sunday 22 with the risk of a thunderstorm. Overnight values should start the week at 15 or 16 degrees, but are likely to drop to 11 from Thursday night into Friday, though recovering for the weekend. Winds are expected to be light and very variable in direction on Monday, but to become south-westerlies in the afternoon, gaining strength on Wednesday afternoon to eventually bring the showers in on Thursday afternoon and a blustery Friday, with the same on Saturday, a little lighter on Sunday and Monday.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
This year’s 24-hour Carp Pairs Match was the best for several years, producing 44 fish for a total weight of 590 lb between the 18 anglers, all but two landing fish.
Top weight was Adam Bennet and Phil Middleton, on pegs 9 and 10, whose 13 carp weighed 170 lb 8 oz, including the event’s biggest carp, of 20 lb 8 oz.
Runners-up were Ben O’Flaherty and Sam Fitchet with eight fish for 117 lb 8 oz.
This year it was decided to allow the teams to fish pegs alongside each other and to remove the favoured pegs from the draw, which made it a fairer match.
Stormy weather meant a change during the match from heatwave temperatures to heavy rain, but dramatic shifts in the weather can often bring a feeding spree.
Last year’s event was won with nine fish for 137 lb 14 oz, the biggest 20 lb 8 oz, and in 2016 it was won with 11 fish for 144 lb 3 oz.
The carp fishing has continued to be productive since the match, Redhill angler Craig Lancashire using stalking tactics and bread just in front of the platforms on several swims to land seven carp to 20 lb.
Richard Bray and Paul Baker shared a catch of 12 carp to 18 lb from pegs 74 and 75 on NashBait Candy Crush.
Old Lake regulars José Garcia and Robert Haddad, along with Robert’s 13-year-old son Jack, enjoyed a 24-hour session that produced 15 carp on home-made 15 mm tiger nut and Maple boilies.
José had eight fish, the biggest a 20 lb 1 oz common, while Robert landed four to 14 lb 9 oz, and Jack three to 14 lb 1 oz, for a total of almost 200 lb.
And Malcolm Crundwell, from Southwater, marked his first fishing trip for 40 years with a 19 lb common carp from peg 17, on a 15 mm DNA Baits pop-up.
Non-stop bream action was what Brian Spiking enjoyed when the matchman had a pleasure session on peg 10 on Saturday on the Front Bank.
Brian landed over 50 fish to 5 lb, starting on a feeder for 20 fish, before switching to a 13-metre pole for the rest.
Single grains of corn were the best hook baits, and he reported that the fish wanted plenty of Bait-Tech Special G groundbait and micro pellets.
At exactly this time last year there was a 50-bream catch in a match by Mark Hathway, whose fish weighed 168 lb and took five keepnets to hold, and set a new silver-fish record, which shows the quality of sport that is on offer at this time of year.
TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Friar Tuck has been landed again at 32 lb 4 oz, two weeks after being caught at exactly the same weight.
The latest capture was by Jason Ostler, who was fishing peg 1 with Mainline Essential I.B. bottom baits, while the previous capture was to Matt White in a brace of ‘thirties’, also from peg 1.
Stephen Spear, from Crawley, was pleased with the 26 lb 8 oz mirror that he caught from peg 15 on an overnighter, using a Sticky Baits The Krill pop-up and a Manilla bottom bait in a snowman presentation, alongside a PVA bag of broken boilies.
And Justin Karstens landed a 25 lb common on a pop-up at peg 7, while his pal Aaron Hyde, from Essex, had a 20 lb common from peg 5 on a Mainline Cell wafter over a small amount of hemp.
PLEASE NOTE: LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
BONDS LAKE
This is a great time to grab yourself a slice of the action on Bonds, which regularly produces multiple catches of carp to double figures on a variety of methods, from pole to feeder and straight lead to waggler.
MILTON LAKE
Milton Lake comes into its own at this time of year for tench, bream and crucians, along with a few bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach.
