THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
Anglers taking a break from festive activities have been enjoying carp and bream action on the Old Lake and carp catches on Bonds, as well as finding a few roach on Milton Lake.
The scaling back of tench and crucian activity on Milton means that the roach get a chance to get to baits, which makes it easier for anglers to target them.
Some sizeable fish are present, to over 2 lb, and fine tackle can now be used to fool them, without the fear of tench in particular muscling in and disturbing the swim.
Calm weather ahead of the one-day break looks likely to be followed by a brief window of south-westerly winds and mild conditions, ahead of more frosty weather over the coming weekend.
And after a break from angling activity on New Year’s Day, Thursday looks likely to be a prime opportunity to land a few fish, on the Old Lake, Milton, Bonds and Temple.
Rain last week has added colour to the Old Lake, which always encourages the zander to feed during the daytime, along with the rise in water temperature that comes with it.
It should be a pleasant week to be outdoors, with no sign of rain, light-to-moderate winds, mostly from the west or south west, and some good spells of sunshine. Monday should start cloudy but mild, with a high of 8 degrees C, turning sunny at lunchtime before a cloudy afternoon, and 5 overnight into a cloudy Tuesday of 7, ahead of the one-day break for New Year. Thursday’s reopening should be cloudy and 7, with 6 overnight into a milder 9 on Friday, with 3 overnight into a very sunny Saturday of 7 as a change takes place to colder nights and days, falling to 2 overnight due to the clear skies and high pressure directly overhead, and 5 on Sunday, with zero into a Monday week high of 4, and 2 into Tuesday week. Winds should start the week as moderate south-westerlies on Monday, becoming lighter on Tuesday and more easterly, gaining strength on Thursday as they become south-westerlies again, easing a bit on Friday and more westerly, and then light north-westerlies on Saturday and back to south-westerlies on Sunday for a few days. So, a quiet week weather-wise, with cloud to encourage fish to feed in the already coloured water, and a fishy south-westerly blow on Thursday to stir things up on the return after the break.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
The fishery will be closed on New Year’s Day, but reopen as normal on Thursday.
Next month it will host a Predator Day, on Saturday, February 15.
Tickets will be £21, £16 for under-16s and OAPs, and all participants will receive a Gold Label Tackle goodie bag that includes predator rigs.
TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
A slower week for reported catches on Temple, but the mild spell and south-westerly winds could well produce another flurry of action, for those looking for an opportunity before the next run of frosts.
The fishery will be closed on New Year’s Day, but reopen as normal on Thursday.

PLEASE NOTE: LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
BONDS LAKE
The carp are catchable in good numbers, on feeder or straight lead to the island margins or in open water on a pellet waggler, or down the edge on a pole.
And there are also roach and perch to be caught on pole or waggler, especially now that the carp don’t pounce on any bait in the water.
The fishery will be closed on New Year’s Day, but reopen as normal on Thursday.
MILTON LAKE
Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads.
Fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach, using small baits and very small balls of groundbait, and are particularly active when the weather is mild.
The fishery will be closed on New Year’s Day, but reopen as normal on Thursday.
