THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
The Old Lake has been producing plenty of carp action, despite some chilly temperatures and bright weather.
Up to six fish per session have been landed, and a PVA bait stringer was the successful method used to deliver a few free offerings close to the hook bait.
Zig rigs are also a tactic that Bury Hill carp don’t see very often, and it paid off for Temple angler Luke Luff, when he landed a 36 lb 8 oz common on black foam.
Predator anglers have been kept busy by the Old Lake’s zander and pike, Alan Pickering landing 36 zander to 8 lb in five short visits this season, his latest session producing 14 fish to 6 lb.
And famous angler Graeme Pullen dropped in for a short session for his Totally Awesome Fishing Show, successfully combining a bit of bream fishing with a rod out for zander.
It looks like being a week of two halves, with high pressure and northerly winds meaning sunny days and chilly nights at first, and then it’s all change to south-westerlies and milder conditions, with double-figure daytime values and close to double figures at night from Thursday into the weekend, without the risk of a frost. Monday should be similar to Sunday, with a high of 9 degrees C and a mixture of sunshine and cloud, but dropping to 4 overnight into Tuesday, which may be showery and no more than 8 degrees at best, dropping to 2 overnight into Wednesday. But Wednesday should be milder, at 12 degrees, dry and cloudy, with 8 overnight into Thursday, 12 on Thursday, with the chance of a shower but some sunny spells, falling to 4 overnight into Friday, but 12 on a dry and cloudy Friday, 9 overnight into a cloudy and largely dry Saturday of 14, and then 8 into a Sunday of 9. Winds should start as moderate north-easterlies on Monday, becoming slightly stronger north-westerlies on Tuesday, lighter south-easterlies on Wednesday, and then light-to-moderate south-westerlies from Thursday, strengthening a little through Saturday, but easing a bit on Sunday. So when the cold snap is replaced by milder weather and south-westerly winds, there should be a prime feeding window for the fish, in time for the end of the week and this weekend.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Carp sport on the Old Lake has been busy, despite the chilly weather, and with milder conditions and south-westerly winds forecast going into this weekend, the prospects look good for some bumper catches.
Brian Mayne, from Redhill, landed six carp to 15 lb on an overnighter at peg 15, using 15 mm Mainline Cell bottom baits tipped with white Toppers, and with PVA stringers to deliver his free offerings.
Neil Vickers and Matt Surman, from Worcester Park, shared a catch of four carp to 22 lb on an overnighter at pegs 2 and 3, all of them commons, on 15 mm Mainline Banoffee boilies in snowman presentations with pop-ups, each bait having ten freebies close by.
Artur Piersa, from Shepherds Bush, had a brace of carp, at 20 lb and 17 lb, on an overnighter at peg 3, on 20 mm Sticky Baits The Krill boilies tipped with 12 mm Pineapple Toppers, putting out 1 kg of offerings about three-quarters of the way across.
And famous angler Graeme Pullen had a successful session for his Totally Awesome Fishing Show, landing bream on feeder and maggot-and-worm cocktails, and then using half roach baits with just a single swan shot on the line for the zander.
The free-to-watch result should be shown soon on their website’s weekly show, which is put out on Fridays at 7pm.
The successful start to the predator season has continued, providing lots of zander action and a good sprinkling of jack pike.
Lake regular Alan Pickering has already landed 36 zeds to 8 lb on his five short visits, his latest trip producing 14 to 6 lb in four hours, on small smelt deadbaits.
Reece Nyles was also kept busy, with 12 zander to 8 lb 11 oz and three pike to 8 lb, on small roach and smelt sections, while lake regular Janusz Kansik had seven in an evening, the best 7 lb, all on legered small sections of roach, keeping resistance to a minimum and recasting every 30 minutes if no run resulted.
Fishing friends Martin Reeves, Bex Nelson and Ben Taylor, from Surrey, managed to land nine zander and two pike, the biggest 6 lb, all in daylight in bright and sunny conditions.
Successful tactic was float fished half roach on single size 4 and 6 hook, and the key to their success was keeping on the move, dropping into empty swims on the Front and Long Banks and then moving on again.
TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Zig rigs can be a great tactic to try in sunny weather at this time of year, when fish move up in the water to where the upper layers are being warmed by the sun, but often not right to the surface, if there is a chilly wind.
They may not want to drop down to the cold layer of water on the bottom to pick up baits on the lake bed, but a zig anchored a few feet below the surface could be right in front of them and difficult to ignore.
It’s rare to hear of a carp being caught on a zig at Temple, but it’s a tactic that could produce fish when others are struggling, especially now that the weather has divided the water into layers of warm and cold.
Luke Luff came up trumps when he fished a black foam zig at peg 11, in open water, when it produced a 36 lb 8 oz common for him, at a time when action on the lake was slow.

BONDS LAKE
Bonds has been in great form, as indicated by how popular it has been, often the first lake to fill up on warm weekend days.
One of the great attractions is how a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with bait fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.
MILTON LAKE
Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach using small baits.
