THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
High winds made fishing difficult at the weekend, but put fish in a feeding mood in the mild conditions.
Car-less Chris Dean had planned to spend 48 hours on the Old Lake, but had to finish after one night when the winds left him without a bivvy.
But he still had four chances, resulting in two carp, the biggest a 14 lb mirror.
Temple first-timer Jason Vanarkadie bagged a 25 lb common in the difficult conditions, which put many anglers off.
The Old Lake bream were enjoying the mild spell just before the big winds hit, 36 lb 8 oz winning Geoff Vallance his own match on Saturday, the same weight that won the contest the previous Saturday’s in mild conditions, while the Steve Gardener Wednesday series contest was won by Shaun Sylvester with 32 lb 8 oz.
The good news is that the winds should be less lively from midweek and into next weekend, but still gusty south-westerlies that should encourage the fish to feed in the mild temperatures.
Zander anglers are also getting a few fish in the coloured water caused by the winds, Mike Holcombe and his son Kevin, from Godalming, enjoying some success this week with fish to 5 lb on freelined roach sections.
There are still places for next Saturday’s Predator Day, on February 15. Tickets are £21, £16 for under-16s and OAPs, and all participants receive a Gold Label Tackle goodie bag that includes predator rigs.
For the third week running the same weather pattern has dominated the forecast, with a dip in midweek and some chilly nights that could produce a frost, due to this Sunday’s Full Moon, followed by a quick recovery to provide double-figure values by the weekend.
Monday looks set to bring a near halving of Sunday’s temperature from a high of 13 degrees from the weekend just gone to 7 on Monday, with a sunny morning and a showery afternoon, before a drop to 2 overnight into a very bright and dry Tuesday of 6, with 2 overnight into a similar Wednesday of 7, with 3 overnight into a mixture of sunshine and showers on Thursday and 8, with 3 overnight into an overcast Friday that should get up to 11, and staying at 8 overnight into a damp and overcast Saturday of 11, with 9 overnight into a Sunday of 8. Winds should start as strongish westerlies on Monday and Tuesday, becoming a bit lighter on Wednesday, a touch stronger again on Thursday, but slightly lighter on Friday having become south-westerlies, and the same on Saturday, more westerly on Sunday, then getting a little lighter with every day that passes in the week after. So, a relief from the very strong winds, but enough of a blow to stir fish into feeding, and becoming mild once again in time for the weekend, especially for February.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

Some of the strongest winds that the fishery has experienced for quite a while prompted many anglers to stay indoors over the weekend just gone.
But Chris Dean made his way over from Eltham to fish a 48-hour session and was rewarded with four takes.
However, the winds put paid to his bivvy, so he had to cut short his visit after one night, though he still had a 14 lb mirror carp and a 12 lb common to show for his efforts, both on single 15 mm CC Moore Pacific Tuna boilies with a few freebies, at peg 16.
Saturday’s Geoff Vallance match, on the Front Bank, was won by Geoff with 36 lb 8 oz of bream from end peg 23, on pole and maggots.
Runner-up was Paul ‘Tommy’ Hiller with 27 lb 6 oz from peg 6, ahead of two anglers tied on 25 lb 8 oz, Mark Hathway, at peg 11, and Steve Gardener, at peg 8.
The Wednesday before, the Steve Gardener contest was won by Shaun Sylvester, who had 32 lb 8 oz of bream from peg 74.
Runner-up again was Paul ‘Tommy’ Hiller, with 29 lb 4 oz from peg 34, with Simon Ellis and Geoff Vallance joint third with 28 lb 8 oz, from pegs 16 and 21.
Fifth was Ian Chatfield on 25 lb 4 oz, and Steve Gardener was sixth with 25 lb.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

One angler who braved the high winds and got a good result was Jason Vanarkadie, on his first trip to the lake.
Jason, from South London, landed a 25 lb common on a 14 mm Bumbleberry Supreme purple pop-up, using a PVA bag of pellets alongside, to get his campaign started in style.

BONDS LAKE

The carp are catchable in good numbers, on feeder or straight lead to the island margins or in open water on a pellet waggler, or down the edge on a pole.
And there are also roach and perch to be caught on pole or waggler, especially now that the carp don’t pounce on any bait in the water.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads.
Fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach, using small baits and very small balls of groundbait, and are particularly active when the weather is mild.
