THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
Mild temperatures at the weekend boosted sport for carp and bream anglers, leading to a 34 lb 5 oz mirror carp being landed on Temple.
Alex Harris was the successful angler, fishing peg 12 with a single wafter.
And also on Saturday, Mark Lambert landed nine bream of around 4 lb 8 oz during a session in the middle of the Front Bank of the Old Lake, as temperatures rose after the frosts of earlier in the week caused by the unusually high air pressure, which set a new record.
There’s another, lesser dip expected in midweek this week, but it’s forecast to be gone in a couple of days, being replaced by another very mild spell in time for the weekend.
There are still places for next month’s Predator Day, on Saturday, February 15.
Tickets are £21, £16 for under-16s and OAPs, and all participants receive a Gold Label Tackle goodie bag that includes predator rigs.
It’s almost a case of blink and you’ll miss it with regard to this week’s cold spell, because after a couple of nights of low temperatures, there are double-figure values forecast for Thursday, Friday and the weekend, even overnight on Sunday night.
Monday is expected to be a moderate 8 degrees C, with a largely dry day and a short spell of sunshine, but turning to rain after nightfall, and dipping to 2 degrees overnight into a much sunnier Tuesday under the clearing skies, with just a short afternoon shower expected, but a high of 6, and falling to 2 again overnight into a bit more cloudy Wednesday of 8, but staying at 6 overnight into a more showery Thursday of 11, with 7 overnight into similar on Friday and 12, with 9 overnight into a dry and cloudy Saturday of 11, with 7 overnight into a similar Sunday of 13, staying in double figures overnight into Monday week. Winds should start as moderate south-westerlies, becoming stronger and more westerly on Tuesday, a bit lighter on Wednesday and returning to south-westerlies in the evening, moderate-to-strong south-westerlies on Thursday, and strong on Friday and Saturday and also Sunday and Monday week before falling away, with a bit more westerly by the weekend. So, with perfect timing for the weekend again, the short cold snap looks set to be replaced by mild and fishy south-westerlies, strong enough to stimulate an interest in feeding.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

You can pretty much predict when the bream will be keen to feed, by looking at the temperature and whether it’s rising or falling.
Mark Lambert took advantage of a rising thermometer and double-figure values to land nine bream of around 4 lb 8 oz from peg 14, in the middle of the Front Bank.
Mark, from Camberley, was fishing on Saturday with yellow Dynamite Baits Washter, and he also had fish on double red maggot.
Earlier in the week the going was a good bit tougher, due to the low temperature, Paul ‘Tommy’ Hiller winning the league contest with 15 lb of skimmers.
He fished a cage feeder cast to the island, and finished up on a pole with dead maggots and Daiwa Advantage Green Bream groundbait with pellets.
And before the cold snap took hold, Terry Petman, Alan Adams and Ian Chandler, from Mersham, shared a catch of 30 bream from pegs 10, 11 and 12, all on small feeders and double maggot.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

This weekend provided Alex Harris with a welcome 34 lb 5 oz mirror carp, on a 24-hour session in improving temperatures.
Alex, from Worthing, was fishing peg 12 with single 15 mm Northern Baits Secret One wafters, over loose offerings.

BONDS LAKE

The carp are catchable in good numbers, on feeder or straight lead to the island margins or in open water on a pellet waggler, or down the edge on a pole.
And there are also roach and perch to be caught on pole or waggler, especially now that the carp don’t pounce on any bait in the water.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads.
Fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach, using small baits and very small balls of groundbait, and are particularly active when the weather is mild.
