THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
Some of the UK’s best anglers descended on the Old Lake on Saturday for the Guru Feeder League, hoping to win hundreds of pounds in prizemoney, and it took over 50 lb of bream to clinch the cash.
The mild weather was more favourable than the very low temperatures that started the week, though the up and down nature of changing conditions and the 30 matchmen competing kept weights below what can be achieved.
The back of the island was the place to draw, Robbie Taylor taking the honours in the contest, which followed a cancelled Boddington Reservoir match in the previous round.
The Old Lake bream should find the start of this week more to their liking, because there’s a mild feel to the weather for the first few days, with double-figure daytime highs until Friday, and even then only dropping a couple of degrees to a sunny 8 degrees C, with 4 overnight potentially just avoiding a frost at the weekend.
Monday and Tuesday are likely to be the wettest days, with frequent showers, though with highs of 11 on Monday and 12 on Tuesday, and 9 overnight from Monday into Tuesday, and a balmy 10 overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday that should produce good action. Wednesday should provide some sunshine amid the showers, with 8 overnight into a drier Thursday of 10, with 5 overnight into a dry Friday of 8 with some sunshine, and 4 overnight into an overcast but dry Saturday of 8, with 4 again overnight into a Sunday of 6, as daytime and night-time temperatures take a dip for the week after. Winds should start as moderate south-easterlies on Monday, becoming a little stronger on Tuesday, a little lighter and more south-westerly on Wednesday, turning westerly and then north-westerly on Thursday, but still lightish, and northerly and lighter on Friday, then a little stronger and easterly on Saturday and stronger again and north-easterly on Sunday, into a very bright but frosty Monday week. So, a week of change from fishy wet and mild weather to dry and sunny but chilly at night by the weekend, as the low pressure gives way to a high, carried on light easterly winds.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

It’s good to see Bury Hill chosen as a venue for the Pemb Wrighting Guru Feeder League, and there was plenty of action for the 30 anglers who took part in the latest round on Saturday.
Robbie Taylor came out on top, from peg 70, with 53 lb 3 oz on Method feeder.
Also on Method feeder was runner-up Mark Hayes, with 39 lb 2 oz from peg 75, ahead of local angler Mark Hathway with 35 lb 8 oz from peg 71, on the Method, and likewise Ben Emery on 29 lb 8 oz from peg 34.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

A slower week for reported catches on Temple, after a hectic spell of four ‘thirties’ at the start of this month, including The Ghost and The Parrot.
The mild spell at the start of this week could well produce another flurry of action, for those willing to brave the rain, before a return to frosty weather at the end of next weekend, as the weather moves on from the latest window of opportunity.

BONDS LAKE

The carp are catchable in good numbers, on feeder or straight lead to the island margins or in open water on a pellet waggler, or down the edge on a pole.
And there are also roach and perch to be caught on pole or waggler, especially now that the carp don’t pounce on any bait in the water.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads.
Fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach, using small baits and very small balls of groundbait, and are particularly active when the weather is mild.
