THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
The zander fishing on the Old Lake is well worth a visit if you can pick a milder day among the frosts and chilly weather.
Two anglers who did just that were Adam Rogers and Nick Driver, and they were rewarded with a shared 13-zed haul, the biggest going 9 lb, falling to Nick.
Other anglers have been doing well with lures, tempting pike as well as zander, and light-coloured shads have been successful.
There are always bream to be caught, no matter what the weather, as was demonstrated this week with a seven-fish pleasure catch. And 25 lb 12 oz won the midweek match just two days after the Old Lake was frozen over.
Feeder seems to be the best bet at present, on a variety of baits from pellets to mini wafters.
The weather has entered a chilly phase, with an average high of just 4 degrees C over the next few days, and some sub-zero nights, though night-time temperatures should stay above zero next weekend. Monday should be very sunny and reach 5 by day, but dropping to minus 2 overnight into a more cloudy Tuesday, also of 5, staying at zero overnight into Wednesday and a fairly sunny 3, but with the chance of a shower. But Wednesday night looks like being the coldest night of the week, down to minus 4, followed by 3 on Thursday but with some sunshine, staying at 1 overnight into a cloudy Friday, which should make 4, helped by the cloud cover, and 1 overnight again into Saturday, which should also be a cloudy 4, with zero overnight into a Sunday and Monday of 4. Winds should ease a little from the strong gusts of last weekend, giving moderate north-westerlies on Monday, becoming lighter south-easterlies on Tuesday, moderate north-westerlies on Wednesday, lighter south-easterlies on Thursday, and moderate easterlies on Friday, before a weekend of moderate north-westerlies, becoming lighter into the week after, as bright but calm and frosty conditions return. So, after a dip in temperature on Wednesday night, with the clear skies, things should level off a bit into next weekend as the cloud cover provides a blanket to retain more heat, providing more stable conditions at about average values for late January into February.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

Predator anglers are still finding some sport, despite the cold weather, the best catch reported being a shared 13 zander for two anglers.
Adam Rogers and Nick Driver landed fish mostly up to 4 lb but topped by a fine 9 lb fish late in the evening.
Roach tails on light legers cast four or five rod lengths out worked best, but the 9 lb fish fell to a slightly bigger roach head section.
Nick said: “We went to make the most of a warm spell after a cold snap and the wet and windy conditions set the zander alight!”
Lure anglers have also been doing well, and more pike are showing up in catches, 10 cm light coloured shad working well, days of low pressure definitely being the best for fish feeding activity.
The lake’s bream are also still willing to show an interest, 25 lb 12 oz winning the second Steve Gardener midweeker, which was fished by 24 anglers.
Geoff Vallance, from Crawley, won from peg 31, casting a feeder to the island, ahead of Steve Gardener on 24 lb from peg 70, Tony Morris with 23 lb 12 oz from peg 32, John Radford with 23 lb 8 oz, and Shaun Silvestre on 21.
In a weekend pleasure session, Ray Parker had seven bream to 4 lb from peg 38 on open-end feeder with 2 mm pellets and groundbait inside, using 4 mm pellets on the hook, cast tight to the island.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

A slower week for reported catches on Temple, but a few anglers are still putting in some time and are hopeful of getting some action.

BONDS LAKE

Bonds is a popular choice among visitors, because of its track record for producing multiple runs, and also because a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy, and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with baits fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach using small baits.
