THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
The Steve Gardener winter league series got off to a fine start this week with some good bream weights, despite low temperatures in midweek.
Terry Harrison took the honours with 68 lb of fish from peg 75, behind the island, just ahead of Geoff Vallance next to him on 74.
The Old Lake’s predators are also feeding well, one angler landing eight zander to 5 lb, and a pike of around 15 lb took one match angler’s wafter as he was reeling in.
Bonds Lake is proving a real draw for roach anglers, who are enjoying busy sport with large numbers of fish on float fished maggots while the carp are less active, though heavier loosefeeding will still bring them around to investigate.
With the Full Moon on Monday week, next weekend is likely to be a contrast between a cloudy and windy but frost free Saturday and a bright and sunny, calmer Sunday but after a sharp overnight frost.
After a very mild weekend, with temperatures close to double the 6 degrees C that is normal for mid-January, there is expected to be a return to cooler days and chilly nights from Thursday into the weekend, though Saturday should escape a frosty start. Monday should provide a cloudy 8 degrees, having been 6 overnight, and then 5 overnight into more cloud on Tuesday, which should have a high of 9, with 7 overnight into a damp Wednesday of 9, but then clearing overnight as temperatures reach 3, leading into a sunny Thursday of 5, but then down to minus 1 into Friday, which should also be 5, but staying just above zero into Saturday and 5, before back to minus 1 into a sunny Sunday of 4, with 1 overnight into Monday of 5. Monday’s Full Moon is the reason for the change to frosty weather, but when its influence wanes, milder conditions should return to sharpen the appetites of the fish, and provide another window of opportunity. Winds this week look set to start as moderate north-westerlies, becoming more south-westerly on Tuesday and Wednesday, but lighter north-westerlies on Thursday, and light south-easterlies on Friday and Saturday, becoming moderate westerlies on Sunday and Monday. So an end to the mild spell, but Friday and Saturday offer a chance before the sunny but frosty weather returns, to last into the week after.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

The first in a series of Steve Gardener winter league matches illustrated how there’s a good day’s fishing to be had on the Old Lake, even in chilly weather.
And if big weights are achievable under match conditions, even bigger weights should be possible with fewer anglers on the bank.
Despite a dip in temperatures in midweek, the Wednesday contest produced a 68 lb winning weight for Terry Harrison, at peg 75, just ahead of Geoff Vallance on 65 lb, at peg 74.
There were section wins for Jimmy Bullard with 37 lb from peg 13, and Steve Gardener with 30 lb, while one angler had his wafter grabbed by a pike of about 15 lb as he brought it in, showing that the lake’s pike are putting on weight and are willing to take an artificial of a wobbled deadbait.
Zander anglers are also still getting plenty of action, Mike Edgar, from Leatherhead, landing eight of up to 5 lb on roach tails, using a light running lead.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

A slower week for reported catches on Temple, but a few anglers are still putting in some time and are hopeful of getting some action.

BONDS LAKE

Bonds is a popular choice among visitors, because of its track record for producing multiple runs, and also because a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy, and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with baits fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.

A good few anglers are targeting the roach, fishing pole or waggler and maggots for lots of fish of 4-6 oz while loosefeeding small amounts, to avoid attracting the lake’s carp.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach using small baits.
