THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
The Bury Hill zander record has been broken by a fish of 17 lb 2 oz caught this weekend, as a father and son shared an eight-fish haul that included two eight-pounders.
Janusz Kansik has been a regular at the lake for four years, specialising in zander, and he topped a memorable day with his dad, Jacek, when he landed the huge predator, which beats the record that has stood for over seven years by 1 lb.
Mild weather this week certainly got the bream feeding, 77 lb being needed to win Steve Gardener’s midweek match, Andy Ryan leading the way.
And the Old Lake’s carp were also in a feeding mood, Artur Piersa landing five during his overnighter, the biggest 16 lb.
Temperatures look like slipping a little this week, giving an average high of 7 degrees C, due to the cooler weather being blown in from the east, and less sunshine than of late, but with light winds it should still feel pleasant, in particular in the latter half of the week. Monday is likely to bring the most noticeable change, from a sunny 11 on Sunday to 8 degrees and drizzle, having dipped to 5 the night before, and then down to 4 into a wet Tuesday, which may not improve on 4 all day, and then a slip to 3 overnight into Wednesday. But that should be the end of the wet weather, with the arrival of the Full Moon this Friday being heralded by a dry Wednesday with some sunshine and a high of 6 as the recovery from the low temperature dip begins. With 4 overnight into a dry and cloudy Thursday of 7, it should be 5 overnight into a similar Friday that reaches 8, and then 6 overnight into a similar Saturday of 8 and 7 overnight into a sunnier Sunday of 8, and a very sunny Monday. Winds look likely to start as moderate north-easterlies, becoming more easterly on Tuesday, but lighter on Wednesday with a bit more southerly in them, then lighter still on Thursday but easterly, and the same on Friday and Saturday. So, it’s a week when temperatures take a dip but recover in midweek to level out by the weekend and become settled, helping fish to become accustomed to the lower values as they anticipate the next rise.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Bury Hill has a new zander record in the form of a 17 lb 2 oz fish landed by Janusz Kansik.
Already this season there have been some big catches of zeds to individual anglers, but what was missing was a really big fish to whet anglers’ appetites.
That all changed this weekend when Janusz broke the seven-year record with his huge fish, which took an inch-long section of roach on a size 6 single hook.
Regular visitor Janusz, who is a full-time Angling Trust Building Bridges Project Officer, was fishing with his father, Jacek, on a Twilight Ticket, and between them they landed eight zander, including two of 8 lb, and a bonus 13 lb carp, as well as one zander on a boilie.
They were fishing just 15 yards out, on peg 2, with very light legers and very light, plastic bobbin indicators.
The fish beats his personal best of 14 lb, which he landed three years ago, and is one of over 300 zander he has landed over the past four years.
He weighed it on kg scales and it went 7.8, which converts to 17.16 lb, or 17 lb 2 oz, and measured 78 cm long.
The official Bury Hill zander record was held by a fish of 16 lb 2 oz caught in March 2011, though a netting of Temple Lake in late January 2014 turned up a 17 lb 3 oz fish, which was moved to the Old Lake.
That fish is thought to be one caught on a boilie by Temple carp angler Terry Brown the year before that, weighing 15 lb 10 oz.
It was also a good week for bream anglers, the Stevie Gardener midweek match being won by Andy Ryan with 77 lb, on feeder.
Andy was on peg 74, at the back of the island, and he was just ahead of Tony Morris, next door at peg 73, with 76 lb, also on feeder.
Third was Peter Turnbull wit 65 lb on pole, from peg 75, the other side of the winner, while Stevie was sixth with 35 lb from peg 69.
Carp angler Artur Piersa had plenty of action on an overnighter, despite heavy rain, landing five fish, the biggest 16 lb.
Fishing peg 10, Artur used snowman presentations with 20 mm bottom baits tipped with 10 mm Chocolate pop-ups.
And Chris Chapman, from Woking, had a good mixed catch from peg 16, which included four carp to 17 lb, all of them commons, two tench, which shows that they will feed when it’s mild, and his first zander, at 3 lb, on single 18 mm Mainline Cell boilies with PVA bags of free offerings.
TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
A slower week for reported catches on Temple, after the big fish in October, but with the water temperature stabilising, there should be a good chance of some action soon.

BONDS LAKE
Bonds is a popular choice among visitors, because of its track record for producing multiple runs, and also because a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with baits fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.
MILTON LAKE
Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and specimen roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach using small baits.
