THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
A predator angler got a lively surprise this week when his half mackerel bait was taken by a 16 lb mirror carp.
Adrian Vizitiu had the pike bait picked up by the double-figure carp, which added to an entertaining day when he caught six zander to 7 lb.
The predator fishing has been good in the milder weather, anglers getting multiple runs from zander of a good average size.
There is also still plenty of action on Bonds Lake, where half a dozen carp per visit is not unusual, pellets being a good choice at present.
And the Old Lake has also been fishing well in the pleasant conditions, two anglers on an overnighter sharing a catch of four carp to 19 lb on snowman presentations.
It looks like being another mild week in prospect, with an average high of 13 degrees C and a good deal of sunshine, though with some showers. Temperatures should rise slightly from the weekend, providing 13 on Monday and sunshine and showers, having been 8 overnight, and then 9 overnight into a very dry and sunny 13 on Tuesday, with 9 overnight into another 13 on Wednesday but with more cloud. Thursday should reach a cloudy 14, after 9 overnight, and give 10 overnight into another cloudy 13 on Friday, with 9 overnight into Saturday. The weekend looks like being slightly cooler, with 11 on Saturday and 6 overnight into the same on Sunday and 9 on Monday. Winds should be a constant run of moderate south-westerlies from last weekend through to Thursday, when they are likely to become lighter south-easterlies, falling very light on Friday and becoming north-easterlies for the weekend, strengthening on Sunday and Monday. So Tuesday in particular should feel very pleasant, and Wednesday should benefit from the warmth of Tuesday but with the cloudy conditions that seem to encourage fish to feed, especially given the moderate south-westerlies, while also staying dry.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

Adrian Vizitiu is a regular visitor to the Old Lake in the predator season, catching good numbers of zander, and he also fishes for carp in the summer.
But the Dagenham angler didn’t expect to catch a carp on the popped-up half mackerel bait that he had cast out for zander or pike at peg 2.
The 16 lb mirror was one of seven fish that Adrian landed on his visit, the other six being zander to 7 lb, all on small roach tails in the margins.
Anglers who put out a spare rod for other species have done well on the Old Lake, adding to the variety of what they catch, and doubling their chances if conditions favour one species over another.
A rod cast out with boilies while fishing for predators, or a bigger bait for a pike while the main rod is fishing a small fish section for zander can be a worthwhile tactic.
Another angler enjoying the current zander action is David Farrer, who landed his first of the species this week.
Also fishing peg 2, David, from Fulham, had fish of 8 lb and 4 lb, on a hair-rigged roach head and tail.
On the carp front, Scott Line and Sam Downing shared an overnighter at pegs 16 and 17, landing four carp to 19 lb, on 18 mm Mad Baits Pandemic bottom baits tipped with pop-ups.
After the late-October frosts, sport has now improved as the temperature has stabilised, and there looks likely to be more mild weather to come, which should provide good conditions for carp, bream and predators to feed in numbers, as well as being pleasant to be out on the bank.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

A slower week for reported catches on Temple, after the big fish in October, but with the water temperature stabilising, and a frost-free week forecast, there should be a good chance of some action.

BONDS LAKE

Bonds has been in great form, as indicated by how popular it has been, often the first lake to fill up on warm weekend days.
One of the great attractions is how a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with bait fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.

Rob Taylor, from Abinger Hammer, landed six carp to 14 lb from peg 7, the biggest fish being a mirror, on double 8 mm hair-rigged pellets.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach using small baits.
