THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
Bonds Lake is the place to head for if you are looking for plenty of action, because it seems to keep producing the goods no matter what the conditions.
When cold weather and chilly winds cause sport to slow on the other lakes, Bonds is still capable to providing lots of runs, and the smaller fish seem to fight harder than the heavyweights elsewhere on the complex.
Paul Benefield has had some memorable catches on Bonds in past years, and he managed 12 fish on his latest visit, the biggest 10 lb.
Method feeder was his chosen tactic, but any number of approaches work well, from pole to waggler and straight lead to standard carp tactics of big leads and boilies.
Bonds has been on great form throughout this summer and autumn, and has been one of the first lakes to fill up with anglers, because it offers the best chance of action.
And now that temperatures are dropping and fewer anglers are venturing out, there are more swims to choose from and more fish to try for per angler, so it is well worth a visit.
The Old Lake bream were a bit harder to tempt for the Beddington club midweek match, due to the run of frosty nights, which always take their toll in autumn, before the fish have had a chance to get acclimatised.
But Terry Harrison still managed 24 lb of bream to win, though feeder was the only approach they were willing to respond to.
It looks like being a milder week this week, with an average high of 14 degrees C and mainly values in double figures at night. Monday should give 14 degrees, due to lots of high cloud, staying at 10 overnight into a similar Tuesday and 15, with 11 overnight into a sunnier but also showery Wednesday of 13. Temperatures are then likely to dip overnight to 6 into a dry but cloudy Thursday of 13, and 8 overnight into a cloudy Friday of 12, dry until lunchtime but then wet in the afternoon and evening. Then after 10 degrees overnight, Saturday should be a mixture of sunshine and showers with 13 degrees, leading to 9 overnight into a potentially stormy Sunday of 12. Winds should continue their south-easterly direction from last weekend, being moderate at first but strengthening on Wednesday, and continuing strong on Thursday and Friday, though becoming more south-westerly on Saturday and into Sunday. So, a welcome frost-free week with cloudy days to tempt fish out to explore, and with winds losing their eastern edge in time for next weekend, which for those willing to brave the rain should be a good feeding time of strong south-westerlies before they drop light again on Monday.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

For carp and bream anglers, the start of November often brings a slowdown in sport as the first proper frosts take effect, and the fish adjust to the drop in temperature.
After an October feed-up before the frosts arrive, there is usually a period of adjustment as the fish get their appetite back.
Thankfully the first really cold spell is often short-lived and soon replaced with milder weather, winter still being some weeks away, and this helps encourage fish to return to feeding, at least until the next big dip, though the second set of frosts usually don’t have the same shock value.
The Beddington club contest in midweek followed that first run of proper frosts, and preceded the change to milder south-westerlies and a return to positive values overnight.
So anglers struggled for fish, and 24 lb was enough to win it for Terry Harrison, who fished a feeder and 6 mm pellets with yellow dumbbells at peg 15, reporting that pole failed to produce a bite.
Don Garnish was second with 22 lb from peg 35, ahead of Bob Clampit with a smaller 22 lb, and there were other 22s in a close frame on a difficult day.
A couple of years ago a late-October Hackbridge AS contest was won with 27 bream, and then one week later the top weights were halved to 51 lb, before the fish got used to the change.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

A slower week for reported catches on Temple, after the big fish such as Nemo and The Ghost in October, but with the water temperature stabilising, and a frost-free week forecast, there should be a good chance of some action, especially if the short spell of stormy weather suggested for Saturday and Sunday arrives as expected.

BONDS LAKE

Bonds has been in great form, as indicated by how popular it has been, often the first lake to fill up on warm weekend days.
One of the great attractions is how a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with bait fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.

Paul Benefield was in action this week, landing 12 carp to 10 lb on Friday on Method feeder and 2 mm soaked pellets, using 12 mm white dumbbells on the hook.
Leatherhead angler Paul also had a surprise 1 lb 8 oz roach, casting across to the reeds from peg 14.
A couple of summers ago Paul landed an outstanding 45 carp from Bonds, on waggler and banded pellets, and he has also had catches of 36 bream to 6 lb from the Old Lake, and the week after that 35 tench to 5 lb from Milton.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to head for if you want tench, bream, crucians and roach, along with a chance of a bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach using small baits.
