THIS WEEK’S FISHING! (in brief)
Bream sport continues to be a prime attraction on the Old Lake, the latest midweeker producing a winning weight of almost 100 lb.
Despite match conditions, with more lines in the water and keepnets, and fishing during the hardest part of the day, Mark Smith landed 93 lb of bream on pole from peg 8.
And there were plenty of backing weights, the next four anglers all having over 60 lb.
Temple Lake has produced another ‘thirty’, this time to Mark Reynolds, who also had a 24 lb 4 oz common to go with the 31 lb 12 oz mirror, and two other ‘twenties’ were reported.
Bonds is still one of the most popular lakes on the fishery, providing regular action, such as the eight carp landed by Alan Derbyshire on a small Method feeder.
And the Old Lake carp are still very catchable, three fishing friends sharing a nine-carp catch on a 24-hour session, including fish of 23 lb and 22 lb 8 oz.
There is a gradual cooling of the weather expected this week, temperatures dipping below the recent 20 degrees C to around 17 or 18 by Saturday, which may sharpen appetites. Monday looks likely to hang on to 20 degrees, with sunshine and cloud but dry weather and an overnight of 15 into 21 on Tuesday with more cloud but still dry. But then a drop is expected to 17 for Wednesday and the chance of showers from mid-morning until midday, then 9 degrees overnight into a dry and sunny Thursday of 17. Another single-figure night of 9 is likely into a Friday of 17 with more cloud but a warmer night of 11 into Saturday, when it should be sunnier and 18, with 11 overnight into a warm Sunday of 22. Winds should start as moderate westerlies, becoming more south-westerly and stronger on Tuesday, and lighter but north-westerly on Wednesday, lighter still on Thursday and then moderate and more westerly on Friday, falling lighter on Saturday and Sunday. So, Tuesday could be a prime day, with strong south-westerlies, on the warmest day of the week by a degree or so, and the last of the 20-plus degree days before the drop, and the warmest night, at 16 into Wednesday, just ahead of the change in wind direction to something lighter and more northerly on Wednesday.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

The bream fishing on the Old Lake this year has been impressive, providing consistently good sport right through spring and summer, despite the heatwave.
Even back in April a match was won with 99 lb of them, then in May 18 big fish, two catches of 21 to 7 lb in June and 40 fish to 5 lb, then 35 fish to 5 lb in July in a match, and a 104 lb match catch along with a 54-fish pleasure catch, 50 fish in August in a pleasure session and a 112 lb in a match, with another pleasure catch of 44 fish.
And even now as temperatures cool, the latest midweeker was won with 93 lb, by Mark Smith, fishing a pole at peg 8, suggesting that if ever anything can be guaranteed in fishing, it is plenty of bream action when you fish the Old Lake.
Runner-up in the latest match was Malcolm Heaver with 68 lb 8 oz from peg 1 on feeder, ahead of Keith Hogg at next peg 2 with 68 lb 2 oz on pole and corn.
Mark Hathway and Tony Morris were joint fourth with 65 lb 6 oz each, Mark fishing feeder or pole at peg 38 (where he set a match record of 168 lb in August last year), and Tony peg 32 with feeder.
On the carp front, fishing pals Jay Robertson, from Croydon, Connor Saunders and Jack Tullett shared a catch of nine fish during a 24-hour session at pegs 2 and 3.
Connor had the biggest, a 23 lb mirror from the margins, closely followed by Jay with a 22 lb 8 oz carp in his five-fish catch, all on single boilies.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

Following on from the recent rash of ‘thirties’, when ten were landed in three weeks, there was another one this week, falling to Mark Reynolds.
Mark had a 31 lb 12 oz mirror carp and a 24 lb 4 oz common, on Bloodworm boilies.
Also in action were Ray Harding, who had a 20 lb 12 oz fully scaled, from peg 9 on an 18 mm Mainline Cell bottom bait.
And Gary Burton, from Carshalton, landed a 20 lb mirror carp from open water at peg 4, on a Cell wafter.

BONDS LAKE

Bonds has been in great form this summer, as indicated by how popular it has been, often the first lake to fill up on warm weekend days.
One of the great attractions about Bonds is how a variety of tactics work, meaning visitors can fish in a way that they enjoy and still catch plenty of fish.
Pole or feeder, straight lead or waggler, or pellet waggler up in the water with bait fired over the top all work well, and the fish keep on the move, giving lots of anglers a slice of the action.

Fishery regular Alan Derbyshire turned his attention to Bonds to land eight carp to 8 lb at peg 6, on a small Method feeder cast tight to the island, and 8 mm washed-out Mainline Cell wafters.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake comes into its own at this time of year for tench, bream and crucians, along with a few bonus carp, either on waggler with a running line, or pole close in or up against the lily pads, where fish can often be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach.
