Cooler weather gives sport a boost

THIS WEEKS FISHING (IN BRIEF!)

The end of the mini-heatwave has brought an upturn in sport, along with some relief from the unseasonably high temperatures.
After days of sweltering in 30-degree heat when the seasonal norm is 15 degrees, many anglers were relieved to get back to more normal conditions.
Both bream and carp have shown more of an interest in feeding, a 16-carp catch being shared by father and son Dan and Connor Lucas.
And there was a catch of 50 bream for an angler on the Long Bank, fishing pole and pellets or feeder and dumbbells.
Meanwhile Temple Lake is producing a few fish again, including a brace of 20 lb and 19 lb 8 oz for Martin Plank.
There is still time to book in for the annual Carp Pairs match on July 29, to coincide with the RideLondon cycling event on that Sunday, which closes roads to the fishery for much of that day.
Temperatures should be around 20 degrees C this week, providing more comfortable conditions and encouraging fish to feed for longer during the day. After an overcast weekend it should be a sunny Monday of 22 degrees with light winds and overnight values well into double figures, before a more showery Tuesday of 20 degrees and a wetter Wednesday of 19. But then things should dry up for an overcast Thursday and Friday of 18, with a little more sunshine for Saturday and 18, and a wetter Sunday of 16 degrees. Winds should start light but with some easterly direction in them, strengthening from Wednesday afternoon and becoming westerlies, which are expected to be very strong by Sunday, but then dropping overnight on Sunday night to light on Monday for a warm and sunny day of 19 degrees.

• The predator fishing season begins on October 1 and continues until March 14.

• Anyone who fancies being part of the night syndicate of anglers who are allowed to fish Temple and the Old Lake after dark for a £50 joining fee will be interested to hear that there are places available. To apply, get in touch with the office on 01306 883621.

• Anglers are reminded that fishing on Temple and night fishing on the Old Lake is available exclusively to members of the Bury Hill Specimen Carp Club. Membership cards must be carried at all times when on the fishery, and be available to bailiffs when they carry out checks prior to the evening lock-up.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

With temperatures returning to closer to the seasonal norm, there has been an improvement in catches, with up to 16 carp per session and 50 bream for one angler.
Father and son Dan and Connor Lucas, from East Horsley, shared 16 fish, the biggest a 20 lb common for Connor, fishing pegs 3 and 4 with single 18 mm Mainline Cell boilies in open water over a couple of kilos of loose offerings.
An angler fishing peg 34 on the Long Bank had the bream lined up and landed 50, on pole and pellet or feeder with 8 mm dumbbells cast tight to the island.
This summer’s 24-hour Pairs Carp match, fished by 12 teams, is on Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30.
The draw will take place at 5pm on the Saturday, with fishing from 6pm until 6pm on the Sunday.
Entry costs £100 per pair, payable on booking, and if 12 teams take part, the winners will collect £300, with £150 for second and £100 for third. Optional pools of £25 will be available.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

After a lull in sport during the very hot weather, the action has been picking up as fish show an interest again, post spawning.
Martin Plank landed a brace of them, a 20 lb mirror carp and a 19 lb 8 oz common, fishing peg 3 with luminous fake maize and PVA bags of corn, hemp and tuna cast tight across, and pinning the line down with a back-lead.

BONDS LAKE

Bonds regularly produces multiple catches of carp to double figures on a variety of methods, from pole to feeder and straight lead to waggler.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake is the place to try for a catch of prime roach, using a waggler on a running line or pole just a short distance out, close to the pads, where they can be lined up with a little-and-often loosefeeding approach. And in the mild spells there are crucians, tench and bream to be caught, along with occasional carp.
