Old Lake Latest Catches week ending 19/1/20
When the Old Lake carp want to feed, there’s no stopping them, including using baits and tactics intended for bream.
The 19 anglers in the Wednesday Open landed seven, despite tackle more suited to landing fish a quarter of their size, and Geoff Vallance had three of them, the biggest around 20 lb, for about 50 lb of fish that didn’t count and went back unweighed.
Steve Gardener won this second match in his series, landing 34 lb 8 oz of bream on pole or feeder from peg 70.
Not far behind and finishing equal second were Mark Hathway, on peg 12, and Paul Hoffman, on peg 32, both with 32 lb 12 oz.
Terry Harrison was fourth with 29 lb, from peg 75, with Mark Parrett fifth with 25 lb 12 oz, from peg 37.
The Brian Spiking League match, the following Saturday, produced a winning weight of 16 lb 5 oz, for Paul Taylor, fishing peg 2 with quivertipped double dead red maggot at 35 turns of his reel, to land ten bream.
And Chris Bean took over at peg 2 afterwards for a 48-hour carping session, and had a 12 lb one during his first night, despite a heavy frost.
