PREDATORS

Old Bury Hill is noted as one of the countries premier predator venues, offering fantastic sport for both pike and zander.

The predator season begins on October 1st, ensuring our fish are in the best condition and are not stressed during the warmer months. The Old Lake supports pike to the 30 lb+ with a good average weight of around 12-15 lb and between 40 and 50 20 lb-plus fish of which 10 are over 25 lb. Indeed, last winter produced different pike of 33lb, 28 lb 12 oz and 27 lb 8 oz.

With the pike stock having been boosted by 70 fish in recent months, Bury Hill’s a great destination for your first 20-pounder.

The Old Lake is famous for its specimen zander, last winter seeing over 300 double-figure fish reported to 14 lb 14 oz – threatening the venue best of 16 lb 2 oz. There are more doubles than ever before and all are continuing to thrive with the large head of prey fish and high water quality. Who knows how big Bury Hill zander could be this coming winter?

A full range of fresh and frozen baits and end tackle is available from our on-site tackle shop. Click here for details.

Tactics
Weather conditions are fundamental to successful predator fishing, but with generous stocks of pike and zander it’s rare for there not to be some great sport available whatever the weather.

Pike sport tends to be most consistent in cold, clear and bright conditions, with action to both live and dead baits. Sink and draw deads or paternostered live baits both score well.

The pike fly fishing enthusiast will also find good sport on large, bright artificial patterns – particularly from one of Bury Hill’s popular punts that allow you to present a lure in all manner of tight spots. It’s crucial that wire traces are used to ensure the safety of the fish, and tackle checks will be made. Click here to read Predator Rules and tackle requirements.

Zander feed hardest in mild, overcast conditions or when the fishery is more coloured following heavy rain. Again, both deads and live baits score, but keep resistance to a minimum and scale tackle down slightly to fool these sometimes finicky feeders. Smaller baits such as fish sections and strips can also bring extra bites, particularly when using lamprey or eel sections.

PREDATOR WELFARE
Bury Hill is committed to protecting its unique stock of specimen pike and zander. We will not allow inexperienced anglers to fish for and endanger our predators with inappropriate tackle more suited to sea fishing. Regular tackle and equipment checks will be made during the predator season to minimise dangers from tackle and poor handling, helping to ensure you catch pike and zander in their prime.

Anyone under the age of 16 who intends to fish for zander or pike without adult supervision must first attend a Predator Clinic on site, which is open to all.

Our predators deserve to be handled carefully. Free to attend, Predator Clinics ensure we are confident in everybody’s ability to safely handle, unhook and return pike and zander. Click here for details of our Predator Clinics.

To fish for pike or zander you must also have the following equipment:
  1. Minimum 42 inch landing net
  2. Large forceps (no gags)
  3. Minimum 42 inch padded unhooking mat

Bream and carp catches resist weeks downpour! - 13 July 2008
Despite some pretty grim weather, all lakes fished reasonably well with the Old Lake seeing some good bags of bream and carp reported regardless of the weather whilst the two smaller lakes also saw some reasonable action. Picture shows bailiff Eric Bailey rushed off his feet between customers...
