Zander go on feeding frenzy with big catches reported! - 13 11 2009


Sonubait consultants Alan Stagg and Duncan Charman fancied a move away from their regular winter quarry of barbel, chub and roach targeting instead the Bury Hill zander.



Following a recent short zander session which produced 6 fish to 8lb (see pictures) for the pair giving each angler their first taste of zander fishing, indeed Duncan even  managed a surprise bream which took a small section of sprat. The pair were anxious to return knowing that bigger fish were on the cards and with conditions looking good, the duo returned this week admidst a feeding frenzy when they caught over thirty zander in under 4 hours, yes I did say 30! With a double each under their belts, Alans weighing 10lb 6oz, Duncan's 10lb 14oz, the pair also caught a spread of fish which averaged over 7lb with many of the fish coming as the light came off the water. Fishing pegs 40 and 42, the successful method was small sections of sprat fished on single size 6 and 8 carp hooks which were tied to fine wire, the pair caught most of their fish from the open water with a few coming from the margins.

Whilst fishing, Alan and Duncan witnessed a fellow angler make a remarkable catch, the unknown angler bagged three eleven pound plus fish in just 20 minutes. Weighing 11lb, 11lb 8oz and 11lb 12oz, the angler is thought to have caught on small roach deadbaits from the top end of the long bank. If anyone knows the angler concerned, I would love to get further details and pictures if possible, as this must rate as one of the best zander catches ever from a UK stillwater.
