Sean Howards Year on Temple! - 05 10 2009

Sean Howard’s Year on Temple!

After a fantastic year last year (2008|) with 50 fish caught (way beyond my expectations!) and a long cold winter.... the urge to get back to Temple was fired up by Mark Savage’s amazing capture of one of the ‘Italian’ at mid 30s in freezing conditions. Arriving at the lake in mid February for a 24 hour session, my sanity seemed questionable.... the lake was half frozen.... I was pretty sure that the red and yellow plastic combo and the “glug” was “blown”.... and I was sure it was going to be much harder this year plus I was pretty unclear on tactics! As David reported that week, there was the “odd crazy man fishing that weekend”.... 2 hours later Temple’s Ghost was gracing my mat weighing 37lbs caught on a CC Moore sweet cream pop up…. the next morning Italian 2 hit the scales at 31lb 6oz both fish were complete shocks and the start of an even more amazing year!

Temple's Ghost and Italian 2...

Two weeks later four fish to 33lb11oz graced my net (with two taken on the “blown glug and plastic”), things now were really flying. From then on the glugged plastic started to produce every week for Robin Ellis and myself.... so maybe it hadn’t blown!

The spring was great.... terrific fishing capped by a truly remarkable 9 fish bonanza in just 48 hours which included three thirties topped by a new lake record 38lb 7oz mirror.... now it just doesn’t get better than that!  After steadily introducing boilies all year as a back up plan, in June I actually started catching on them.... maybe I wasn’t the one trick pony after all! (I think Russ in the tackle shop came up with that one!)

Early one June morning I was woken up at 5am by a 31lb 5oz mirror.... I just netted it and off went the middle rod.... which produced the “Jelly Common” weighing in at 32lb 7oz.... and then one hour later a gorgeous scaley mirror weighing 33lb 11oz joined the party!!! Three 30s in just 2 hours.... words failed me for once!

Sean's three 30's haul...

For personal reasons I stopped fishing for most of July and August.... but returned in August as I’d heard things had got much harder.... so after a couple of walks round the lake and seeing a bit of clouding up in front of swim 6, I set up expecting a long wait.... we’ll an hour later my mate the Ghost decided to beat me up.... a bit down in weight after spawning.... but seemingly on an exercise regime.... a very memorable fight.... I always seem to catch the Ghost when I’m really not expecting to catch.... long may it continue!! Another 2 fish, a 26lb common and an 18lb mirror came from swim 6 before I moved to swim 3 which produced a cracking 29lb 9oz mirror that beat me up in the fight... and on the bank (a nice slap in the face from his tail!)... and then after I put him back my watch was missing.... I reckon that fish nicked it!! Even so, a nice return to Temple after my break!

Temple's THIEF!

In truth I’ve struggled a little in the last few weeks (2 blanks!).... and yes I do believe that the plastic and glug days are numbered!

However I managed to catch my 50th Temple fish by mid September with a stunning woodcarving 29lb mirror (prettiest fish in the lake in my book!).... and  spookily on the same bait as the first fish of the year in icey February.... a sweet cream pop-up.... I have also since gone on to bag another thirty, this time a cracking 31lb 2oz mirror called Sargeant!

Sean's "50th and prettiest fish of the year"

So once again thank you David for what is a brilliant fishery and thanks to the other regulars for making Temple such an enjoyable place to be and fish.... A couple of friends have asked what next.... I have caught virtually all of the fish in Temple now.... but there is a couple that don’t seem to get caught.... and I reckon they are well worth catching (a big common and a mirror)…. so I’m experimenting with baits and rigs to  try to tempt them.... although this could mean a few blanks!

All the best
Sean Howard
