Russ Evan’s 4-hour ton up haul using ‘Big’ waggler tactics - 20 06 2008
After a recent IYCF feature with editor Kev Green (see this months edition, issue 208) Bury Hill tackle shop manager Russ Evans put his big waggler tactics to good use again on the Old Lake during a short evening session on the front bank. Using Cotswold Baits 8mm halibut pellets on a Middy Lasoo set up, Russ bagged a dozen bream up to 6lbs and five good sized tench with the biggest going 6lbs 9oz plus a cracking bonus carp of 14lbs 13oz. The four hour session produced a near ton up bag for the Cotswold Baits sponsored angler who picked up his fish 40 yards out with the use of an 8 gram waggler as used in the current feature. To make sure the fish were kept grubbing around in his peg Russ catapulted out 6mm halibut pellets and a few loose mini boilie offerings at regular intervals to keep the fish coming on a regular basis.
Russ says “For those who have never experienced chucking a large waggler 40 yards, then watching as the tip lifts 6” before striking into a 5 or 6lb tench or bream, are really missing out. This method of fishing is great fun and really not as difficult as it sounds”.
Full details on this exciting method can be seen in this months IYCF magazine, which is available from all good newsagents priced at £3.10. Alternatively, drop into the shop during your next visit to the fishery and Russ will be happy to point you in the right direction regarding method, bait and tactics.

Another catch worth mentioning this week was Clive Hill and Steve Clarke’s double ton up boat haul from the Jungle. Using 12’ stepped up float rods with 10lb line and loaded wagglers, the pair fished 10mm halibut pellets which they fished close to the end reed bed margins over a bed of 4mm carp pellet. Whilst the action was slow to start, the pair finished their day with 21 tench to 8lb 1oz, 5 carp to 17lb 3oz and a couple of dozen bream to 5lb giving them a great days sport and over 250lb of fish.
