Pike go on feeding frenzy as ice melts! - 20 01 2010
With the melt now well underway, anglers who have braved the conditions have been finding exceptional sport from the pike with fish to 18lb reported in recent days.
With half the lake still iced over, predator regular Colin Allchin decided to fish peg 26 which is the first deep water swim along the long bank banking a cracking 16lb 4oz specimen. Fishing a running lead with a size 6 single hook, Colin caught his fish on a sprat head section.
Another angler to do well was Darek Motyka. Fishing deep-water peg 24 along the front bank, Darek caught two pike, a lovely marked fish weighing 14lb 4oz and a smaller 5lb fish. Darek caught both his fish on ledgered mackerel tail sections, which he cast to the edge of the ice.
Another angler to brave the conditions was regular Martin Holly who popped down for an afternoon session. Fishing peg 21, Martin caught a 7lb fish on ledgered roach section, which he fished tight to the ice.
With conditions set to continue to improve, expect further catches over the coming days and week.
