OVERNIGHT ESCAPADES ON THE MIGHTY TEMPLE
I fish many different waters every year, some I go back to, others I leave well alone. Well that’s not the case with Temple. I have only fished there once before, last winter in fact. To say I got done over by the Temple carp is an understatement. I fished my socks off trying to bag one of the scaly lovely thirty pounders that reside in this little magic lake. I used every trick I had up my sleeve but to no avail. I was getting really frustrated with myself and piling on the pressure on myself. At the time I was on such a roll and couldn’t fathom what was going on. What made it worse was venue regular Sean Howard came down and banged out a couple of thirties for fun. Good angling Sean. This guys record speaks for itself catching many of the Temple biggies at will.
Well I had decided that was it I had to have a second go at these lovely creatures. All I could manage was an overnighter due to work commitments. Many people had said they only come out on plastic sweet corn. I know how many people have used it up there, so that was the last thing I wanted to use. I arrived late afternoon to a mild thunder storm brewing, pukka. I plotted in peg number six away from the other anglers. I used a single XLR8 bottom bait with a small pva ball bag of hinders Salamiz multimix. This was to try and entice an early carp and put my mind at ease. I was just sorting out my carpin hotel for the night when the heavens absolutely opened very viciously. I remember thinking how lucky I was to have put my ultralite up so early. Funny really because I never do that. I was sat there feeling very smug that I was dry and warm. Well with that the middle rod absolutely ripped into a flyer. An unbelievable battle ensued resulting in a 25.08 Temple carp. I was elated to be holding one of these beauties at last. Bloody hallelujah. I fished for another couple of hours with singles before I went to town with the marker float to try and find some likely spots for the night ahead. Once I had allocated three smooth silt feeding patches I deposited 15 to 20 spods of hemp very accurately over the areas. Followed by 60 to 70 Richworth XLR8 boilies per rod. Just into dark I was receiving some good liners from two of the rods. With confidence high I retired to bed to get some sleep as I had work the next day. I don’t think I had much sleep before the same rod was away again. A superb 24.08 graced my net. This was going rather well considering David de Vere had told me the night action had been slow. A new rig was put on and put back on the spot first attempt. An hour later the same rod was away again. This time she felt a fair bit heavier and fought a lot harder. On hoisting her on the scales she kindly pulled them round just 2 ounces shy of 32 lb. I couldn’t quite believe my over night success after my last encounter. As I was getting the rod ready to go back out the right hand rod was away. Another heavy fish was firmly attached and after a lengthy dogged fight she was on her side nearly ready for netting. This was indeed a bigger fish than the last. As I put my head torch on her she was not amused and let me know it. The clutch was in meltdown mode before it all went wrong. The blessed hook had pulled. Hey hoe it happens it’s just a shame I was that close to another thirty on the bank. I had two more fish of 22.08 and 24 lbs. in total I had six runs five fish landed. A far cry from my previous experience.
This place was created at much expense and you can tell that on first impressions. If you like waking up in beautiful surroundings and loads of large carp swimming at your feet, Temple is the lake for you. There’s even an on site toilet and power points etc for people who fish the lake. There are many small lakes around the country which are lovely but not many give me that carpy buzz. Temple is the brain child of David de Vere who with his wife Mo own Bury Bill. Like I said there has been no expense spared. You get what you pay for but at Temple you get more. I for one will be back to try my luck again for an upper thirty or even a forty. The way these fish have grown it wont be long. Good luck with your angling, may all your runs be thirties
