MATCHES

CLUB, MATCH & GROUP BOOKINGS
Bury Hill welcomes club, match and group bookings at the fishery, although the number of matches are strictly controlled in order to maintain the quality of our fishing, and to this end we normally operate a limit of one match per lake per week, to ensure that the lakes are not over-fished. Due to demand, early booking is essential.

We have three lakes available for matches, Old Bury Hill Lake, Bonds Lake and Milton Lake. All offer consistently high quality sport, particularly during the spring, summer and autumn months, although all lakes can also fish well through the winter. Bonds (20 pegs) and Milton (30 pegs) tend to be more popular for match bookings owing to their size, making it easier for the whole lake to be booked to give anglers fishing exclusivity of the venue on the day.

THE FACTS:

Old Bury Hill Lake
At 12 acres and with 75 pegs, the Old Lake is the venue for larger numbers and predator matches. As can be seen from the Fishery Map, the lake is split into three banks, the front bank which has 25 pegs, the long bank which has 30 pegs and the island bank which has 20 pegs.

Depths on the front bank vary from 3’ at peg 1 to 10’ plus at peg 25, with the average depth of 6/8’ making it perfect for waggler, pole and feeder fishing. The bank has few features apart from a couple of smallish lily beds with open water spanning out to the island, approximately 80 metres away. Generally noted for its big bags of bream and skimmers and supported by roach and rudd, there are no real noted pegs, although the middle of the bank fishes pretty consistently throughout the year. The early shallow pegs are also noted for producing tench and carp whilst the deeper water can produce just about anything depending on the day. Generally, match weights average 30 lb to 60 lb with a good chance of a ton up bag.

The long bank is noted for its abundance of large lily beds, which grow between every swim right up to the top bay. Not surprisingly, tench are the quarry from these pegs with strong float tackle being required as the tench average 4 lb and it is not uncommon to catch fish in excess of 7 lb. The early pegs along this bank are again open water swims varying in depth from 9’ to 7’ and offering a good chance of just about anything to all methods, although bream will again dominate when conditions are right. Match weights along this bank are similar to the front bank with pegs in the late 30s always being capable of producing the odd 100 lb bag or two.

The Island bank is a mix of the other two banks with a number of lily beds spread throughout the bank and plenty of open water swims in between. Pegs 68 to 75 are behind the island which is approximately 50 metres away, whilst the bank also has the benefit of three aeration outlets from which flows highly oxygenated water. The swims either side of the outlets can be very productive for all species and are particularly noted for the large roach/bream hybrids which run to 4 lb. Match weights along this bank are a bit more hit and miss and tend to run from 20 lb to 50 lb as a general rule with the possibility of a really big bumper bag if the fish are shoaled off the outlets.

Bonds Lake
Two acres and with 20 pegs, Bonds is noted for its small carp, which average between 3 and 4 lb and which run to double-figures, although there is also a good head of roach and rudd along with a few tench and bream.
Bonds is Bury Hill’s bag up water, often producing multiple 100 lb bags with winning weights often exceeding 200 lb and occasionally 300 lb. Indeed, the lake has been known to produce close to a ton of fish to 20 anglers at times. Not surprisingly, the fishing on Bonds is classed as easy with all pegs producing from both the near margins, open water and island margins with all methods working on the day. There are no noted pegs with all pegs capable of producing on the day, however pegs 19 and 20, and 1 and 2 are deeper water pegs and have more consistent form during colder conditions.

Milton Lake
With 30 pegs spread over 3 acres, Milton boasts exceptional crucian and tench fishing supported by large shoals of roach, rudd and perch, which run to specimen size. There is also a small head of bream, a few large chub and small carp.

During the summer months, the crucians and tench make up the bigger weights with 100 lb hauls being very possible under the right conditions, although 30 lb to 60 lb is more common. All swims have plenty of features with the reeded margins known to fish particularly well. The island is also another target as are the numerous lily beds, which straddle the centre of the lake. Milton is also well known for its winter fishing which can be exceptional, producing 50 lb bags of roach, rudd and perch on the coldest of days.

Bream and carp catches resist weeks downpour! - 13 July 2008
Despite some pretty grim weather, all lakes fished reasonably well with the Old Lake seeing some good bags of bream and carp reported regardless of the weather whilst the two smaller lakes also saw some reasonable action. Picture shows bailiff Eric Bailey rushed off his feet between customers...
