WATER TEMPERATURES

A cold easterly wind coupled with heavy rain pushed water temperatures down this week with water temperatures ending the week at 17 degree’s. The cold influx of water also affected oxygen levels, which were ranging between 20% to 35%. However the good news is that the outlook for next week looks a lot better with warmer weather forecast.

THIS WEEKS FISHING!

Not surprisingly, the fishing has taken a bit of a hammering this week with the last of the spawning affecting all lakes as has the drop in oxygen levels brought about by the heavy cold rain last weekend. However, the good news is that as the week wore on the fishing improved significantly with all lakes seeing some reasonable sport by the end of the week. Indeed, Temple Lake saw yet another thirty banked whilst boat anglers on the Old Lake reported some terrific ton up hauls of tench from the jungle whilst the two smaller lakes also received some good reports with mixed bags of tench, crucian and silver fish showing on Milton whilst Bonds saw some good nets of small carp reported.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

The fishing on the Old Lake this week was much the same as last week with the last of the spawning and cold heavy rain again making for a tough start to the week, although as the week moved on the fishing improved considerably with some good catches of tench and bream reported with boat anglers doing particularly well with ton up bags of tench making for some exciting fishing.

Whilst the middle pegs along both the front and long banks are still key to the bigger bags, the early pegs along the front bank as well as the middle pegs along the island bank are both producing some good sport to pole, float and feeder tactics. Whilst most good baits catching, large pellets are definitely working well and taking the better fish with bream and tench topping 8lb reported again this week.

Interestingly, boat anglers had a very good week with the jungle fishing particularly well for tench and carp with quite a few bream also showing. Float fished large pellets are the way to go, feeding small pellets to the margins.

Chris Gadsden and Dave Morley both had a cracking days sport down the jungle with both anglers bagging ton up hauls of tench. Float fishing the margins, the pair both caught on Swim Stim paste and large halibut pellets which they fished over loose fed 3mm pellet.

Tim Reece was another angler to find some reasonable action as the week wore on bagging a dozen or so bream to 6lb and 4 tench, which all weighed around the 7lb mark. Fishing peg 36 along the long bank, Tim fished a loaded waggler to the back of the pads catching on soft pellet.

OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

Generally a pretty tough week for the carpers with both the Old Lake and Temple Lake fishing hard owing to spawning and plummeting water temperatures. With intensive spawning taking place on Temple, the site of seeing dozens of huge fish spawning was quite incredible with a number of anglers happy just to be there and witness the spectacular! Saying that, there were a few fish reported over the weekend, which included a thirty pound mirror and a handful of twenties.

With most of the action coming from the back bank pegs on Temple, tactics and baits remain much the same as in previous weeks with both the margins and open water areas producing fish. Popped up “glugged corn” still appears to be the most consistent bait, although this might be due to the fact that this is the bait that most people are using! Boilies are also catching a few fish although most good quality baits will work, so keep an open mind as to baits and areas.

The Old Lake also fished pretty up and down this week with the back end of the week definitely seeing an improvement. With all banks producing a few fish, Icelandic Red boilies are still taking a lot of beating although all good quality baits will catch with Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies all worth a try as are the new Cotswold baits and the new Terry Hearn Red Fish boilies and Dynamites Spicy Tuna & Sweet Chilli boilies. The odd fish is also coming out on fake corn and pop ups as anglers start to imitate their success from Temple Lake.

This weeks catches

Justin Irving led the field this week catching a stunning 33lb 2oz mirror and a 25lb 9oz mirror. Bucking the trend and choosing to fish swim 3 along the road bank, Justin fished Fusion boilies to the island margins catching both his fish during the day.

Temple guru Sean Howard almost had his first blank for months when he failed to get so much as a sniff during his session, but as everyone knows, Sean has the luck of the Irish when it comes to fishing and as he was packing away his rods, the last rod to be reeled in sped off resulting in a cracking 27lb 10oz common. Sean was fishing swim 12 and caught on popped up glugged corn, what else!

Turning to the Old Lake, Terry Mills had a pretty good session catching 7 fish to 21lb. Terry fished peg 32 catching all his fish on Icelandic Red which he fished to the island margins.

Another asngler to catch was Gary Taylor, Fishing peg 15 along the front bank, Gary fished KG1 baits tipped with corn to the point of the island catching 4 fish which included a 20lb 8oz common and 19lb 14oz mirror.

BONDS LAKE

With the last of the spawning seemingly complete, Bonds was not affected by the cold rain and as such fished pretty well this week with bags of carp to 80lb being reported.

With all methods accounting for a few fish, pole and float remain the most successful methods with pellet over pellet working well with maggot, soft pellet and corn also catching.

This weeks catches

Alan Brant had a good days sport late in the week catching 20 or so carp to 8lb for a good 80lb haul. Fishing peg 15, Alan fished large soft pellet on a float set up catching 3 rods out in 4’ of water.

MILTON LAKE

With the spawning also complete on Milton Lake, sport soon returned to summer levels with good bags of tench, crucian and silver fish showing from all areas, but particularly from the swims with plenty of reeds and cover. With pole and float tactics working well, best baits seem to be large 10mm soft pellet over small pellet, although maggot, caster, worm and corn are also catching.

This weeks catches

Peter Giles had a good day mid week  catching 8 tench to 4lb, half a dozen crucian to 1lb 8oz and a good net of silver fish. Fishing peg 15, Peter fished tight to the reeds catching on large soft pellet.

11 year old Guy Wrigglesworth fishing with dad Ian Monday afternoon when they had a private tuition with Bury Hill tutor Eric Bailey. Fishing pegs 2 and 3, the pair float fished large soft pellets over depth close to the reeds catching tench to 5lb.
