THIS WEEK'S FISHING! (In brief)
A cooler but brighter week in prospect, which will suit pike and perch anglers along with those who fancy catching a PB roach from Milton Lake, where the lower temperatures give them a rare chance to feed without being pushed out by the carp.
Although this week is unlikely to match the double-figure temperatures reached last week, there should be sunshine around to warm the water and anglers.
Drennan tackle rep Mike Davidson returned with memories of banking his 12 lb 8 oz zander still fresh in his mind and shared a catch of seven zeds.
But this time is was angling pal Phil, who lost a big fish last time, who came up trumps, this time landing a zander of 10 lb 4 oz
There were also pike to 8 lb caught, but it was the carp that made the most of the mild weather to feed up, and several anglers had multiple catches of double-figure fish.
The best haul was commons of 19 lb 11 oz (see picture below), 18 lb and 15 lb for John Carson, who has produced a YouTube blog about his successful session.
19 lb 11 oz
Best on Bonds was half a dozen carp up to 8 lb for two brothers, while on Milton Lake there were three perch up to 2 lb for Tony Dunn, a 2 lb 5 oz perch for Dan Blakely, and roach to 1 lb with winter tench to over 4 lb for Guy Brave.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
After finally getting around to having a go at the zander fishing at Bury Hill last month, and ending up with a busy day of pike and zander topped by a 12 lb 8 oz zed, Mike Davidson and pal Phil couldn't wait to get back again.
This time Drennan tackle rep Mike shared a catch of seven zeds, but it was angling pal Phil, who lost a big fish last time, who came up trumps, this time landing a zander of 10 lb 4 oz
Mike had five fish up to 8 lb 7 oz and Phil managed a brace, all caught a little way up from the boathouse along the long bank on running leger rigs with bite alarms.
Plenty of pike to 8 lb were caught this week, the best baits being whole small roach, mackerel chunks and half a lamprey float legered.
Dave Pocock, from Kingston Upon Thames, used lamprey section on a size 6 single hook at peg 26 to land an 8 lb pike.
The Old Lake carp fed well in the milder weather, and several anglers had multiple catches of double-figure fish.
The best was commons of 19 lb 11 oz, 18 lb and 15 lb for John Carson, who was fishing a 24-hour session in winds gusting to 25 mph.
He and fishing friend Danny Blann were on pegs 74 and 75, behind the back of the island, and Danny had fish of 14 lb and 10 lb. All the fish took either Mainline Cell or New Grange single 14 mm boilies, except for one fish, which fell for a Pineapple pop-up on a chod rig, cast just off the island in the deeper water.
John has produced a YouTube blog about his successful session, which he plans to post at: www.youtube.com/user/carpblogger/videos
Guy Penn landed an 18 lb 4 oz mirror fishing in open water from peg 38 during a 24-hour session using an 18 mm Tasty Baits FB2 boilie.
Resident predator expert Eric Bailey is running monthly courses for anyone wanting to learn how to catch themselves a pike or zander, and Eric is also available for private tuition and can be contacted on 07802 877575 or through the website.
He is also running predator matches for anglers to try to qualify for the Bury Hill pike final in March, the next one being on Sunday, February 19.
Another way to learn a bit about how to get to grips with predator fishing at Old Bury Hill is to take a look at shop manager Russ Evans' contribution on the FishingMagic website, where he describes his recent success in the fishery's pike qualifier to reach the final on Sunday, March 11. http://www.fishingmagic.com/features/coarse_fishing/predator_fishing/15502-predator-fishing-%E2%80%93-a-very-different-match-for-the-%E2%80%98obsessed-angler%E2%80%99.html And if you want to learn more about how to make the most of your time on the bank, Russ is hosting a new angling show on Ridge Radio on the internet on Wednesday evenings for two hours from 9pm.
It's called The Obsessed Angler and you can email in questions to Russ as well as hear him discuss the latest angling news.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO HIRE TACKLE TO FISH WITH ON A VISIT TO THE LAKE, IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT THE HIRE TACKLE IS DESIGNED FOR GENERAL PLEASURE FISHING, RATHER THAN SPECIALIST CARP OR PREDATOR FISHING, WHICH WILL REQUIRE STRONGER TACKLE.
ALSO, TO ALLOW ANGLERS TO FISH UNDISTURBED, BOATS ARE HIRED OUT FOR FISHING ONLY, AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE JUST FOR ROWING AROUND THE LAKE.
TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Still slower than usual on Temple with temperatures up and down a lot. To winkle one out, try a winter maggot approach, nicking a PVA cobweb bag of flavoured grubs on your hook with a few glued on a short hair.
When the weather is cold and the fish are reluctant to take big baits, which will take a long time to digest, a more 'natural' approach with maggots can bring surprising success. And if silver fish are a problem, rubber maggots threaded on the hair is a great alternative.
PLEASE NOTE: LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
BONDS LAKE
Milder weather has been bringing the fish on the feed, but any drop in temperatures has made things more difficult.
Brothers James and Andrew Kelly made the most of last week's mild spell when they bagged half a dozen carp up to 8 lb on 10 mm boilies, fishing pegs 5 and 6.
MILTON LAKE
Anyone wanting to catch a big perch should take a look at Milton Lake, where2 lb fish are coming out every week.
Tony Dunn, from Carshalton, landed three up to 2 lb on lobworms at peg 13, behind the island.
And Dan Blakely, from Woldingham, had one of 2 lb 5 oz fishing a prawn over chopped lobworms.
Winter tench are also a realistic target, as Guy Brave, from Woking, showed when he fished long pole from peg 19 with single caster over two small balls of groundbait and landed a mixed bag of fish including roach to 1 lb and tench to over 4 lb.
Bury Hill shop manager Russ Evans knows the lakes at Bury Hill better than most, and over the years has written many articles as well as producing his own series of DVDs to help you improve your catches, which are sold in the tackle shop.
