WATER TEMPERATURES
A bit of a mixed week weather wise with much colder weather pushing from the south Thursday onwards which developed into heavy showers as we headed into the weekend. As such, water temperatures dropped slightly to 18 degree’s whilst oxygen levels also dropped into the twenties, which is due to the cold rain. Outlook for the week ahead remains somewhat mixed with sun, showers and generally colder temperatures.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
Having thought that the spawning was all but over, this week saw yet another spawning from both the carp and tench with all lakes being affected. Saying that, the fishing was actually pretty good despite the spawning with all lakes seeing some reasonable catches. On the Old Lake, it was again the bream and tench which made up the bulk of the catches with bags to 70lb reported and individual fish close to 9lb. The carp fishing on the Old Lake has also been pretty good with reasonable numbers of fish being caught which included a few twenties in multi bags of up to a dozen fish.
Whilst temple was hit harder by the spawning, there were still 3 thirties reported in the week along with a few twenties, although the fishing was harder.
Surprisingly the small lakes both fished pretty well this week despite the fish spawning with Bonds seeing nets of small carp whilst Milton produced some reasonable bags of tench and crucian along with plenty of silver fish.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
A similar story to that of last week with spawning and heavy rain again making for a tough week, although some reasonable catches of tench and bream throughout the week were reported which again included some decent fish to 9lb.
Whilst the fish remain well spread, the middle sections of the front and long banks are still the best areas to bag a decent weight, with pellet seemingly being the best bait with pole, float and feeder tactics all working on the day. Although most good baits will catch at this time of year.
Boat anglers had another good week with the jungle fishing particularly well for tench and carp with quite a few bream also showing. Whilst bags have come bag a little this week, there has still been a few catches around the 80lb mark reported. Again large pellet seems to be the best bait, although corn, meat, mini boilies and soft pellet will all catch.
This weeks catches
Brothers Tim and Alan Sharp had a cracking day in the jungle mid week catching 20 odd tench between them to 7lb 12oz, 4 carp around the 12lb to 15lb mark and quite a few bream. The pair fished the left hand side of the jungle catching on large halibut pellets, which they fished over smaller 3mm pellet.
Another angler to do well this week was Ryan Tyler. Fishing peg 33 along the long bank, Ryan fished a long pole with small soft pellet on the hook catching a mixed net of bream, tench and rudd for 80lb.
Bury Hill regular Terry Dean also had a good day when he tackle peg 16 on the front bank. Fishing a loaded waggler 4 rods out, Terry fed small micro pellet catching bream to 5lb, tench to 6lb and two bonus carp of around 12lb on drilled halibut pellets.
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Despite the ongoing spawning, both Temple and the Old Lake saw some reasonable catches reported this week. Indeed Temple saw the number of thirties caught in just 3 months top 70 whilst the Old Lake produced a reasonable number of twenties in what was a tougher week all round.
The fishing on Temple followed much the same pattern as the week before with the fish coming late in the weekend i.e. after I had written this report. Again it was late Sunday and into Monday before the action started with another 2 thirties being reported by Monday night with further fish coming throughout the week. Tactics and baits remain much the same as in previous weeks with the back bank margins still being favorite although the open water areas are also producing a few fish. Popped up “glugged corn” is still taking a lot of fish although boilies are also seeing some good fish caught, however most good quality baits will work, so keep an open mind as to baits and areas.
With all banks fishing pretty well on the Old Lake, the top end of the long bank and island margins are fishing exceptionally well for the time of year. Bait wise, whilst Icelandic Red still takes a lot of beating, all good quality baits will catching a few fish with Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies all worth a try as are the new Cotswold baits and the new Terry Hearn Red Fish boilies and Dynamites Spicy Tuna & Sweet Chilli boilies. The odd fish is also coming out on fake corn and pop ups as anglers start to imitate their success from Temple Lake.
This weeks catches
Best fish of the week on Temple went to Adam Porter who caught a brace of mirrors weighing 37lb 8oz and 22lb. Fishing swim 10, Adam fished popped up corn close to the island margins catching both his fish during the day.
Another stonking big mirror was landed by Justin Irving who fished swim 14 on the back bank. Fishing to the left of the island, Justin bucked the trend choosing to fish Fusion boilies over a few free offerings catching his 335lb 9oz mirror at night.
Bury Hill bailiff Lee Bacon was another angler to strike it lucky over the weekend catching his first ever Temple thirty and a new PB in the shape of a stunning 35lb mirror known as “Robin Hood”. Fishing the back bank on swim 10, Lee fished popped up red and yellow corn tight to the island margins catching in full sun during the afternoon.
Also bagging a 33lb 8oz mirror this week was Paul Hust. Fishing swim 12, Paul fished plastic corn on the hook over a bed of corn and pellet half to the island hooking his fish at just past midnight.
Another angler to bag a thirty this week was Danny Davis who fished the Old Lake bank. Fishing fake corn with pineapple boilies to the island margins, Danny caught a brace of mirrors weighing 31lb and 24lb and also lost two good fish.
Temple regular Craig Hess also had a good session early week catching a 27lb 2oz mirror. Craig fished chopped Active 8 baits tipped with corn to the margins. Mike Saxby was another angler to get amongst the action catching a 27lb mirror. Mike fished popped up corn to the margins from peg 6. Russell Atkins managed a 25lb mirror during his mid week session. Russell fished peg 9 and caught on halibut pellet. Rob O’Neill also managed a plump 22lb 14oz mirror during his day session in the week. Fishing swim 9, Rob caught on popped up corn near the pads. Another angler to catch was Tony Vary. Fishing the back bank, Tony fished a KG1 boilie to the margins catching a 21lb mirror.
The Old Lake also fished pretty well this week with a number of twenties reported. David Oake from Bracknell managed 7 fish during his session which included a 26lb mirror and 20lb common. Fishing peg 32, David fished two KG1 baits over hemp and pellet to the open water.
Another angler on the Old Lake to score was Mark Savage. Fishing peg 24, Mark fished Active 8 baits on a stringer catching 8 fish, all common topped by a 20lb’er.
BONDS LAKE
Despite some last minute spawning activity, Bonds fished well this week with some reasonable nets of carp reported from all areas, but particularly along the road bank pegs, which generally fished pretty well.
With methods accounting for a few fish, pole and float seem to be the top methods with bags to 80lb reported in the week. Bait wise, maggot, pellet and soft pellet are catching well although mini boilies, corn and soft paste baits are all worth a go. The fish are also now up in the water, so also try suspending your baits 2’ deep feeding small pellet or maggot regularly.
This weeks catches
Tim Marshall had a particularly good day in the week catching 20 odd carp to 9lb. Fishing a short pole to both the margins and open water, Tim fed 3 mm micro pellet catching on large soft pellet up off the bottom.
Yiewsley AC struggled on Bonds last Sunday owing to the recent spawning, Bob Ball won the day from peg 13 with 39lb 6oz, Mal Thompson fishing peg 7 was second with 24lb 7oz whilst Tony smith fishing peg 4 was third with 23lb 9oz.
MILTON LAKE
Milton Lake also saw some spawning from the tench in the week, although generally this did not affect the fishing with some good bags of tench, crucian and silver fish reported. As in previous weeks, the best of the action came to pole and float tactics with maggot, caster and worm all catching with pellet, paste and corn taking the better fish.
This weeks catches
Mick Hills had a blinding session midweek catching a dozen or so crucian, 8 tench to 5lb and lots of quality roach and rudd. Fishing peg 11, Mick fished the pole catching just off the reeds on pellet and paste.
