THIS WEEK'S FISHING! (In brief)

Winter's icy grip is going to be relaxing again this coming week with daytime temperatures hitting a balmy 11 degrees C before the weekend.
As the fish get used to the milder weather they will make the most of the feeding window to go on a spree, and anyone ready for them will reap the benefit.
There was plenty of predator action for Mike Davidson and his friend Phil on their visit when they shared a catch of pike and zander topped by a 12 lb 8 oz zed.
And they could have had more as another big zander came off at the net.
There were carp to 18 lb 2 oz from the Old Lake to PVA stick tactics, and Temple produced a pristine 21 lb common for David Hopkins (see picture below).

21 lb

On Milton Lake there was another 25 lb bag of quality roach with a few crucians, while another angler had three crucians to 2 lb 3 oz along with four winter tench to 4 lb 2 oz, and big perch showed up, too.
Bonds continues to produce bags of carp, the best reported this week being eleven to 12 lb 10 oz on groundbait feeder for Neal Black.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Famous face Mike Davidson, who is a sales rep for tackle company Drennan International, finally got around to trying for a zander at Bury Hill, with fishing friend Phil, and the pair had a busy day.
Plenty of jack pike came to their rods followed by a zander of 5 lb 8 oz to Phil, who later hooked a much bigger fish, possibly a double, but it came off a the net.
Then five minutes later Mike's alarm sounded and he was soon landing a zander of 12 lb 8 oz as the light faded towards closing time.
All of the fish fell to free-running leger tactics and small pieces of roach or mackerel, with the best of the zed action coming late in the day.
Another successful predator angler was season ticket rod John Birch, who had three pike to 9 lb in a hectic 25-minute spell at peg 45 using legered head or tail sections of small roach on size 6 barbless single hooks at 25 yards.
And Bury Hill member Terry West took advantage of the 24-hour ticket available to those who have joined the fishery to bank a hard-fighting 18 lb 2 oz common carp.
Terry was fishing peg 2 on the front bank with a 20 mm critically balanced Carp Company Icelandic Red boilie cast to the far bank accompanied by a PVA stick of crushed boilies.

Resident predator expert Eric Bailey is running monthly courses for anyone wanting to learn how to catch themselves a pike or zander, and Eric is also available for private tuition and can be contacted on 07802 877575 or through the website.
He is also running predator matches for anglers to try to qualify for the Bury Hill pike final in March, the next one being Sunday, January 29.

Another way to learn a bit about how to get to grips with predator fishing at Old Bury Hill is to take a look at shop manager Russ Evans' contribution on the FishingMagic website, where he describes his recent success in the fishery's pike qualifier to reach the final on Sunday, March 11.

And if you want to learn more about how to make the most of your time on the bank, Russ will be hosting a new angling show on Ridge Radio on the internet, starting this Wednesday evening for two hours form 9pm.
It's called The Obsessed Angler and you can email in questions to Russ as well as hear him discuss the latest angling news.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO HIRE TACKLE TO FISH WITH ON A VISIT TO THE LAKE, IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT THE HIRE TACKLE IS DESIGNED FOR GENERAL PLEASURE FISHING, RATHER THAN SPECIALIST CARP OR PREDATOR FISHING, WHICH WILL REQUIRE STRONGER TACKLE.
ALSO, TO ALLOW ANGLERS TO FISH UNDISTURBED, BOATS ARE HIRED OUT FOR FISHING ONLY, AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE JUST FOR ROWING AROUND THE LAKE.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Best fish of the week reported was the 21 lb common carp pictured above, which fell to David Hopkins, fishing a Mainline Cell boilie tipped with yellow corn at swim 10.
The bright, frosty days that replaced the mild conditions slowed catches down, but another mild spell is forecast and when the fish adjust to the change they should be moving around again in search of food.

PLEASE NOTE: LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

BONDS LAKE
The carp loved the recent milder conditions and some fine catches were made, including 11 carp to 12 lb 10 oz for Neal Black.
The Westcott angler asked for advice at the shop before his session and he ended up fishing peg 11 and casting a medium-sized feeder plugged with Dynamite Baits Carp Groundbait about 5 ft from the island on the bottom of the ledge.
Hook bait was single grains of corn on size 16 hooks using a Middy Las-soo rig, and he landed eight commons and three mirrors.

For anyone thinking of having a day on Bonds and wanting to make the most of the fishing, it would be well worth a look at:

MILTON LAKE
Once again the roach have showed how willing they are to feed in winter by providing another bumper haul. Trevor Burgess caught an estimated 25 lb of quality fish with a few crucians fishing pole from peg 4 at ten metres straight out.
The Crawley angler used pieces of worm, casters and red maggots to land roach to 1 lb 11 oz, which fell to double caster on a size 18 hook.
Kevin Norris landed three crucians to 2 lb 3 oz and four tench up to 4 lb 2 oz in another impressive bag of fish, this time on single caster over groundbait.
Kevin, from Limpsfield, fished peg 23 using a light waggler at two spots in his swim, but he caught most at four metres, putting in a small walnut-sized ball of Marukyu EGF140 groundbait.
And Tim Sutton had a perch of 2 lb 3 oz on a whole dendraboena worm tipped with a single red maggot, while his pal Neil Cole at the next peg caught a winter tench of just under 5 lb on the same bait..
The pair, from Tonbridge Wells, were fishing pegs 1 and 2 and also hooked other fish that came adrift.

Bury Hill shop manager Russ Evans knows the lakes at Bury Hill better than most, and over the years has written many articles as well as producing his own series of DVD’s to help you improve your catches, which are sold in the tackle shop.
