Another week of sun helped water temperatures increase further to 15.2 degree’s, which was a 2-degree increase over last week whilst oxygen levels dropped slightly to 27%, although these are early morning readings and will increase during the day. Outlook for the week ahead is wet Monday and Tuesday before the better weather returns.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
A great week generally, with all lakes producing plenty of fish.
Starting with the carp fishing, both Temple and the Old Lake have fished well with yet another two thirties reported from Temple along with a few twenties, whilst the Old Lake has seen some excellent multi catches reported, which has included a good number of twenties.
The general fishing on the Old Lake has also been pretty good this week with plenty of tench and bream being caught in bags to well over 100lb with good numbers of quality roach, rudd and hybrids also showing.
The fishing on the two smaller lakes, Bonds and Milton Lakes has also been good numbers of tench and crucian reported on Milton with plenty of carp showing on Bonds.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
As we head into early summer, the fishing generally on the Old Lake is at its best and this week did not disappoint with some excellent catches reported by both the bank and boat anglers.
With large numbers of tench and bream being caught in bags to well over 100lb, the front and long banks are certainly producing some terrific mixed catches with a few good size roach, rudd and hybrids also showing. However, it has been noticeable this week that the boat anglers are starting to see some tremendous sport from the jungle with tench dominating catches to well over 100lb, although they are also catching a few bream and the odd carp.
With pole, float and feeder tactics all working, maggot, caster, worm and pellet are all catching well as are larger baits such as corn, meat and soft pellet so it is worth switching baits occasionally if you are looking to land the odd lump!
This weeks catches
Colin Allchin had a great days sport mid week catching well over 100lb of tench and bream. Below is Colin’s account of his day: I fished peg 1 based on the recent match reports from that peg and also it's nice and quiet and the last peg before the jungle. I was targeting the tench and fished a waggler set about six inches over depth, I caught from the first cast and had 18 tench and 21 bream, the biggest tench were both around 6 1/2 lb with three others over 5lb, the rest were mostly 3 to 4lb. Most of the tench were caught in the morning, there was a slight lull around lunchtime and then in the afternoon the bream moved in, the biggest two bream were well over 5lbs and apart from a couple of skimmers the rest of the bream were also of a good average size of around 3lb. Total weight of the whole bag was well over 100lb and probably around 120lb in total based on average weights. An excellent day's sport by any standard. Tactical details, waggler fished 5 - 6 rod lengths out, fed mixture of pellets, corn and maggot constantly throughout the day. Most of the fish came to maggot hook-bait but I also caught on pellet and corn.
Another angler to have a good day on the Old Lake was Steven Gayle who had a day’s private tuition with tutor Russ Evans. Fishing the front bank, Steven caught a couple of nice tench up to 6lbs during his waggler lesson as well as 20 bream to 4lbs. Steven said "now I know what to do, I will be looking forward to repeating today's catch on my next visit".
Sean Kelly had a good day on the boat yesterday, catching eleven tench to 5lb whilst his dad had two commons both 13lb 8oz, plus 2 tench to 5lb.
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
A great week for the carpers with plenty of action on both the Old Lake and Temple Lake. Whilst Temple has again thrown up another 3 thirties, it was the Old Lake which saw the really big catches with a number of anglers reporting multi bags of up to a dozen fish which included a good number of twenties.
With all banks fishing well, the fish are coming from both the margins and mid water sections with a few fish even being taken off the top. Whilst all good quality baits will catch, Icelandic Red, Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies are all worth a go as are some of the new Cotswold baits and the new Terry Hearn Red Fish boilies and Dynamites Spicy Tuna & Sweet Chilli boilies. Fake corn and pop ups are also working well.
Temple also fished well this week with another 3 thirties reported as well as a few decent twenties. With all banks producing the odd fish, there is still no real pattern as to where the fish are coming from with both the margins and deeper water areas seeing fish caught to both bottom and popped up baits.
Whilst baits remain very varied with all good boilies working as well as popped up baits and glugged corn, “thinking out of the box” is important on Temple and small broken baits and bait combinations such as a small pop up tipped with glugged corn are working. Also look for signs of fish moving putting a bait on them can often lead to a quick take.
This weeks catches
Starting with the Old Lake, one very happy angler was 10 year old Josh Hiscock who landed a new PB in the shape of a 24lb 12oz mirror. Fishing with his dad James who had the first fish of the evening, a 13lb common. It was whilst James was playing his common that Josh’s rod tore off and after a good 10 min scrap, the big mirror hit the scales at 24lb 12oz. His first ever twenty, Josh went on to catch a double figure common and also a nice tench. Josh and his dad fished pegs 30 and 31 and all the fish came from the margins using 10mm shrimp boilies tipped with plastic sweet corn over hemp and crushed boilies.
Two regulars to bag up this weekend on the Old Lake were Stephen Speare and Simon Jones. Fishing a 36-hour session, the pair fished pegs 15 and 17. Catching 20 fish, Stephen’s best fish was a 27lb mirror whilst his other fish were mainly mid to upper doubles, which included a stunning 17lb ghost. All of Stephens fish fell to Fusion boilies fished over loose boilies in a pva bag. Fishing peg 17, Simon caught 17 fish, the best being a 25lb 8oz mirror, all of Simon’s fish fell to Icelandic Red boilies fished tight to the island.
David Oaks’s had a good day on the Old Lake catching 8 fish which included 3 twenties. Fishing peg 33, David caught a brace of mirrors weighing 23lb 5oz and 21lb 5oz and a 20lb common whilst his other fish weighed mid to upper doubles with the exception of a scrapper double. All of David’s fish fell to KG! baits.
Another angler to do well was Simon Davies, fishing peg 24 Simon caught 7 carp which included 3 twenties, the biggest 24lb which all came during a short afternoon session. Simon caught on bread up in the water. Another angler to catch a brace of twenties was Viktoas Korotunas. Fishing peg 53, Viktora caught 3 carp weighing 21lb 4oz, 20lb 4oz and 17lb 1oz on Tutti Frutti boilies.
Turning to Temple, Rob O’Neill caught a cracking brace, a 34lb 2oz common and 29lb 4oz mirror. Fishing peg 12, the common was a new PB for Rob who fished a single grain of corn with a small bag of pellet catching both fish on a size 10 korda hook from the island margins. Both of Rob’s fish were at a record weight.
Rob Savage caught two fish during his session, a 31lb 8oz mirror and the ‘Parrot” weighing 18lb 8oz. Rob fished peg 1 catching on a Mainline Cell boilie. Temple regular Stuart Mountjoy also had a good session catching a 33lb 4oz mirror and a 28lb common. Stuart fished swim 10 catching on corn over hemp and pellet to the pads. Another thirty was also caught in the week, a 31lb 6oz mirror carrying scan number 144125, although as yet there are no catch details.
Regular Sean Howard managed a 25lb 8oz mirror and 22lb 8oz common part way into his session. Both fish fell to popped up glugged corn and were caught off peg 11. David Povey also had good session catching a 24lb 13oz common from swim 9. Fishing single glugged corn, David caught from in front of swim 8 just short of the island.
BONDS LAKE
Another good week on Bonds with plenty of action from the carp in nets to 80lb. Again all banks have been fishing well with float and feeder tactics both working equally well. Regarding baits, maggot and soft pellet are catching well whilst mini boilies, corn and paste baits are taking the bigger fish to early doubles.
This weeks catches
Regular Peter Marshall had a good day catching lots of carp to 8lb for well over 70lb. Fishing peg 7, Peter fished a loaded waggler to the open water catching on double maggot over pellet.
MILTON LAKE
Another very good week on Milton with a number of anglers reporting bags close to 70lb whilst 30/40lb seems to be pretty normal, even this weeks match was won with over 60lb. Whilst the tench and crucian are now making up the bigger bags, there are still plenty of quality silver fish around as well as the odd perch. With all methods working, the best of the action has again been coming to pole and feeder tactics although float tactics are also working with maggot, caster and worm all catching, with pellet, paste and corn taking the better fish.
This weeks catches
Bury Hill held its first open match of the season on Milton Lake this week and it turned out to be a quality match with plenty of carp, tench, crucians plus the odd roach and perch making up the weights.
Martin Kingsley made the most of a good draw by putting a nice net together from peg 4 with a winning 62-8-0. Catching mostly on the pole and pellet over to the reeds on his right hand side, Martin had a few pounds to spare over runner up Robbie Taylor who scaled a good 55-5-0 with Neil Jakes taking third spot with 48-8-0, both anglers scoring with the pole close in and at 10 metres.
Phil Bishop had a good mixed bag from Milton Lake during a short session catching approximately 30lb. Phil caught 13 proper fish plus lots of “bits” with his best tench between 5 & 6lb. Phil fished peg 27?fishing tight to the marginal reeds using pole tactics. Phil commented: I arrived at the complex at 16.00 so probably started fishing soon after 16.30 and I packed up at 19.15. It was my first visit to Bury Hill and I was gutted to have such a short session (appalling traffic getting out of London!). I pole fished tight to the reeds in the margin using a 0.6g float and fishing about an inch over depth. My hook bait was either a Van Den Eynde strawberry jelly pellet or a small cube of plain luncheon meat on a size 18 hook and I cupped-in a few 2-3mm carp pellets from a small pole pot. The reeds were twitching from the moment I arrived at the lake so I knew there were fish active in the swim, I couldn’t understand why anglers all around me were firing heavy leads with PVA bags out into the open water and not catching! My first fish came on my 2nd or 3rd put in, a roach of just over a 1lb, and several smaller fish followed over the next hour until the bigger fish moved in at about 18.00. I caught 4 crucian between 1 and 2 pounds, 3 common all about 2lb, 4 mirror carp 3 between 2lb and 4lb and one that must have been pushing 6lb and finally what I initially thought was a really decent crucian but I suspect is crucian/common hybrid.
