This winter’s huge stocking program is now complete following the dredging of both Bonds and Milton Lakes. Old Bury Hill Lake has seen a large number of big tench stocked as well as a good number of bream and skimmers. Milton Lake has seen most of the carp removed which we have replaced with 500 small tench, over 3500 crucian and simply loads of quality roach, rudd, some gigantic perch as well as a few bream and skimmers. Bonds Lake has also seen a further stocking of small carp from Milton as well as a few roach, rudd and skimmers.
WATER TEMPERATURES
Prolonged dry weather this week saw water temperatures increase by further degree to 15.1 degree’s, whilst oxygen levels settled at 50%, which is more the norm for the time of year.
Outlook for the week ahead is becoming dry after a wet Sunday with temperatures sitting around mid teens, so expect the great fishing to continue.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
Another brilliant week on all lakes with anglers catching plenty of fish which included a few more monsters!
With decent spring temperatures pushing water temperatures up further, there has been another run of big carp from both Temple and the Old Lake, which included plenty of twenties as well as the Old Lakes first thirty of the year.
The general fishing on all lakes also continued with plenty of bream, tench and skimmers showing on the Old Lake whilst Milton Lake continued to produce plenty of tench and crucian ad well as some good bags of roach, rudd and perch. Bonds Lake also saw some good catches reported this week with anglers catching plenty of carp to 10lb.
With good weather forecast to continue over the next week or so, expect the fishing to improve further as water temperatures continue to increase.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Another great weeks fishing on the Old Lake with plenty of bream, tench and skimmers showing from all areas in nets to well over 100lb. With anglers catching from both the bank and boat, the mid and shallow water areas continue to be the most productive with the early pegs on the front bank and the top end pegs on the long bank all fishing particularly well.
With all methods catching, the pole seems to be the most popular choice although float and feeder are also catching well with red maggot and pellet being the best baits although as water temperatures continue to increase, larger baits such as paste, corn and mini boilies will all start to catch a few better fish.
With the tench now starting to gather in the jungle, also expect some brilliant boat sport over the coming days and weeks with anglers already starting to catch bags to 80/100lb.
This week catches…
Bury Hill regular Bradley Gibbons aged 12, showed other anglers how to do it on Friday bagging close to 150lb from front bank peg 21. Fishing a 12m pole set up with No 10 elastic, Bradley fished double red maggot just on bottom feeding loose bait little and often to end his day with 33 bream to 5lb and 3 bonus tench to 4lb. Bradley also lost a good sized carp after a 15 minute scrap.
Another Bury Hill regular to do well this week was Simon Martin, fishing peg 29 along the long bank, Simon fished a loaded waggler 4 rods out catching 26 bream to 6lb and 5 tench, the best around 5lb. Simon caught all his fish on double red maggot fished over 3mm pellet.
Another angler to have a good days sport this week was Pay Hayworth who float fished the long bank catching 10 bream to 4lb and a bonus big perch. Pat also caught on maggot.
Two anglers to do well on the boats were Anthony Watt and Aaron Sizer, fishing the jungle; the pair caught 3 mirrors to 15lb on float-fished bread.
Although carp fishing, Bury Hill regular Scott Maslen found the Old Lakes big tench and bream in an obliging mood catching half a dozen bream between 8lb and 10lb as well as a big double figure tench. All of Scotts big fish came from behind the island on Ultra Flex boilies which he fished over a spod mix.
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Simply a brilliant week for the carpers with Temple and the Old Lake both producing some excellent sport which included a good number of twenties and thirties galore which included the first Old Lake thirty of the year!
Following a run of thirties from Temple last week, this week again saw another run of big fish, with 8 thirties caught and many more twenties with most anglers reporting a fish or two. With fish being caught from both the road and back banks, most good quality baits are working with boilies, stringers; pop ups and corn all accounting for a few fish. However, there is definitely a move away from corn with actual baits starting to work better.
PLEASE NOTE: WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
The old lake also saw bumper action this week producing its first thirty along with a good number of twenties. Whilst the fish remain well spread out, the shallow and mid water swims are producing well as are the island margins. Whilst tactics and baits remain much the same as in recent weeks with ledger and PVA bags clearly the way to go, pretty well any good bait will work at the present time although the old favorites such as Icelandic Red, Cell, Fusion, Maple 8 and KG1 will all give you an edge! It is also worth trying one or two of the new boilies hitting the market and particularly the much talked about Marukyu bait range, which includes a new scientifically produced range of boilies which a few anglers have started to catch on.
As reported last week, boat anglers have also been catching a few carp from the jungle with standard boat tactics of float, boilies and large pellet working.
This week catches…
Leading the pack with two thirties under his belt this week was Stuart Mountjoy who managed a 33lb 4oz mirror and 32lb common as well as mirrors weighing 25lb and 24lb and commons weighing 26lb and 24lb 6oz. Catching from swims 6 and 10, Stuart caught on both a new secret bait and popped up corn.
Another angler to catch a brace of thirties this week was Lee Tait during his early week session. Bagging a 33lb 5oz common and 30lb 6oz mirror, Lee fished roadside swim 3, bucking the trend catching on popped up corn to the margins over a bed of corn.
Following his run of BIG fish from Temple which included a couple of 36lb’ers, Craig Pearman managed another two fish during his weekends session, a 33lb 4oz mirror which fell to critical balanced corn and a 29lb 11oz mirror which he caught on popped up corn. Craig was fishing swim 13 catching both his fish from the island margins.
Joe Levy also managed to bag himself a thirty this week in the shape of a 33lb 3oz common. Fishing a 14mm Cell boilie tipped with yellow corn, Joe caught from swim 14 from the island margins.
As reported last week, Temple regular David Povey also got amongst the thirties catching a 34lb 8oz mirror see picture below, as did Harry Fairbank who caught a mint 34lb common, see picture below.
Other anglers to catch on Temple this week were Kerry-Lee Slade who caught a brace of mirrors weighing 29lb 12oz and 28lb 6oz. Fishing swim 1, Kerry-Lee caught on Rahja Spice boilies which he fished as a simple snowman rig over scattered freebies.
Temple regular Craig Hess also managed a couple of decent fish, a 26lb 14oz common and 25lb 10oz mirror. Fishing swim 4, Craig fished the NEW Ester Cranberry Scoped flavoured popped up corn.
Turning to the Old Lake, Lee Hills caught the first thirty of the year with a cracking 30lb 9oz fully scaled mirror. Fishing peg 36, Lee caught on two 18mm Icelandic Red boilies, which he fished to the open water.
Another angler to catch on the Old Lake was Jim Saunders, fishing swim 3, Jim fished Cell boilies over a bed of pellet catching three fish topped by a stunning 29lb 8oz common. Another angler to bag one of the Old Lakes better fish was Lee Hagerty who also managed three fish topped by a 28lb 6oz common. Fishing swim 19, Lee caught on Red Fish boilies, which he fished to the open water.
Grabbing a quick midweek session, Scott Maslen and son Zak also managed a few respectable fish from the Old Lake, which included a 25lb 4oz mirror as well as a brace of commons weighing 21lb and 20lb for Scott and a new PB in the shape of a 19lb 5oz common for Zak. The father and son duo fished the back of the island catching a dozen or so fish between them on Ultra Flex boilies which they fished over a spod mix fished tight to the island margins.
Another angler to get amongst the twenties on the Old Lake was Dale Clark who managed three twenties as part of his 10 fish haul. Fishing swim 11, Dale caught on 20mm Icelandic Red baits which we fished over 3kg of loose boilies to the open water.
BONDS LAKE
Another good week on Bonds with anglers catching plenty of carp in nets to 80lb. With pole, float and feeder tactics all working, both the island and bank margins are the areas to concentrate on with maggot and pellet working best, although paste, corn and meat are also starting to catch.
This weeks catches…
Terry Marshall had a cracking on Bonds early week catching 9 carp to 8lb float fishing paste over pellet. Elliot Mumford also had a good days sport on Bonds mid week catching 16 carp with his brother, the best 10lb. Elliot caught on ledger tactics catching on mini boilies.
MILTON LAKE
Simply a brilliant week on Milton with more hefty bags of tench and crucian reported again this week as well as some cracking big roach, rudd and perch. With all areas producing, float and pole tactics are definitely the way to go, with pellet, paste and maggot catching on the pole line and inner margins.
This weeks catches…
Bury Hill’s tackle shop manager Russ Evans had a simply superb and enjoyable day on Milton Lake midweek whilst filming his angling DVD series "The Obsessed Angler". Situated on peg 19 Russ fed small soft micro pellets 5 metres out in open water plus a chopped worm line down the margins to encourage a few better tench later on in the filming. After the initial finicky bites on double red maggots, Russ demonstrated by changing baits and shot patterns how to up the catch rate and turn shy bites into more positive ones. With Crucians and tench aplenty Russ bagged 45-50 crucians up to 2lbs, plus 20 tench up to 4lbs. With a smattering of skimmers, roach and rudd the five-hour session produced a quality bag of around 80lbs on the short pole.
Local angler Keith Hampson also had a brilliant days sport mid week catching well over 100lb mixed bag. Fishing the margins by peg 9, Keith fished a light float (2 x No1) set up with double red maggot on the hook feeding the same, Keith caught crucian to 2lb 1oz, tench to 4lb 8oz, perch to 1lb 2oz and roach to 1lb. In all Keith caught over 60 fish.
Rebecca Evans from Oxted, Surrey had a great day's fishing on Milton last Saturday when she fished peg 9 using light waggler tactics with two red maggots as bait in the margins. Fishing tight to the reeds and feeding little and often with maggots and micro pellet on light tackle, Rebecca had tench to over 4lbs, a few crucians plus some good stamp skimmers and roach plus a 2lbs plus perch to account for a fine mixed bag. Her boyfriend Alex Auckland on peg 10 also had a cracking day catching well over 20 tench plus a few big crucians and skimmers, again close up in the margins using similar tactics.
