2010 HUGE STOCKING PROGRAMME NOW COMPLETE!
2010’s huge stocking program is now complete following the complete dredging of both Bonds and Milton Lakes. Old Bury Hill Lake has seen a large number of big tench stocked as well as a good number of bream and skimmers. Milton Lake has seen most of the carp removed which we have replaced with 500 small tench, over 3500 crucian and simply loads of quality roach, rudd, some gigantic perch as well as a few bream and skimmers. Bonds Lake has also seen a further stocking of small carp from Milton as well as a few roach, rudd and skimmers.

WATER TEMPERATURES
With the cooler weather staying with us, this week also saw some heavy rain as we headed into the weekend, which saw water temperatures drop a little to 18 degree’s while oxygen levels generally settled around the 60 to 70% mark.
Outlook for the week ahead is much the same, staying cool with a few showers forecast.

THIS WEEKS FISHING!
With cooler weather now with us and with all the lakes fizzing with oxygen, the fishing has found a new lease of life this past week or so with all the lakes providing some excellent summer sport.
Bursting with fresh water and oxygen, all the lakes have fished really well this week with plenty of excellent catches reported from all the lakes but particularly the Old Lake which saw some very good bags of bream and tench reported with anglers bagging some good nets topped by the odd net to 100lb.
Bonds and Milton Lakes have also seen some pretty good action this week with anglers on both lakes bagging some pretty impressive hauls with Bonds continuing to see carp to 12lb caught in nets to 100lb plus, whilst Milton huge stocks of tench and crucian have also kept anglers busy with some excellent silver fish also making a good show.
With Temple and the Old Lake both on form, this week again saw a couple of big thirties banked along with a few twenties whilst anglers fishing the Old Lake again reported multi bags of up to a dozen fish which included a few nice twenties.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
The cooler weather has certainly put the fish in a feeding mood with all day action experienced by many with anglers who have reported some brilliant catches of bream and tench with the odd lucky angler catching over 100lb.
With all areas producing bumper catches, the fish are well spread out with both the deep, mid and shallow water swims producing some good catches. With pole, float and feeder tactics all accounting for a few fish, pellet, maggot and corn are still the key baits.
The jungle has also seen something of a revival in catches with boat anglers reporting some good catches from the jungle with tench, bream and carp all showing in good numbers. With the autumn now approaching, the open water marks are also starting to fish well with good numbers of bream being caught on float and pellet from the area between the point of the island and entrance to the jungle.
This weeks catches…
Tim Brymer had a brilliant day when he fished peg 11 on the front bank bagging 31 bream to 5lb and 6 tench to 6lb. Fishing a loaded waggler 6 rods out, Tim fed 6mm pellet little and often catching on lassoed 8mm pellet.
Brian Exall from Godstone had a good day in the week catching 20 plus bream to just under 6lbs. Fishing peg 36, Brian fished a small open feeder with plastic corn and small Peach and Mango boilie on a hair rig catching his fish from the open water.
Bag up Bradley does well again during lesson…
Young Bradley Gibbons had a very good day last week when his Dad John booked our tackle shop manager and tutor Russ Evans for a pole lesson on the Old Lake. With a view to competing in up and coming open matches at Bury Hill plus entering the September silvers two-day festival the main basis of the lesson was how to approach the lake ‘match style’. With a feeder line and two-pole line set ups sorted out plus the best rigs to use and how to prepare baits and what baits to use during a match. Young Bradley helped himself to 24 bream up to and over 5lbs with both pole lines producing fish and bites after bites. At times the fish were very finicky but that was down to the change in the weather, which can make the fish go off the feed for spells in a session.
With the emphasis on using light and balanced pole rigs and a little and often feeding pattern, both pole lines at times resembled mini Jacuzzis as the fish were ripping up the silt bed trying to suck up the micro pellet feed. With a few line bites over the fizzing most of the bites on the day were very deliberate but Bradley connected with of them to record a useful total estimated to be around 80lbs of bream. However the biggest surprise of the day was from a lively Zander, which took Bradley’s bait and put up a good account of itself before succumbing to his landing net.
With a few good pointers learnt, Bradley is looking forward to putting his lesson into action when the next open match on Wednesday 18th August comes round, good luck Brad.

Woking DAS held their latest club match on the front bank of the Old Lake last week and the match turned out to be a very close match with the top five anglers recording over 20lbs on a tricky day which saw the fish a little finicky.
Top rod was Pete Dove on peg 14 who used feeder tactics to tempt a few small bream on pellet, his low weight of 28lbs 15oz was good enough to pip top lady on the day, Mary Tigwell who fished feeder and worm from peg 6 who scaled 25lbs 10oz of bream and skimmers.
Result top 5
1st Pete Dove 28lbs 18oz
2nd Mary Tigwell 25lbs 10oz
3rd Dave Steer 25lbs 7oz
4th Martin Marrison 22lbs 12oz
5th Micky Fletcher 22lbs 1oz.

OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Whilst the influx of cold water did slow the carp fishing for a day or two, the fish soon settle back into their old routine having been rejuvenated by the fresh water influx with both Temple and the Old Lake both fishing pretty well as the week wore on.
Whilst Temple again saw some reasonable sport which included yet another thirty, the Old Lake also bounced back with a number of anglers reporting multi bags of up to a dozen fish topped by a few decent twenties.
With all areas on the Old Lake producing a few fish, the early pegs on the front bank and the island margins remained the key areas to target with running rigs and PVA bags clearly the way to go. With most good baits working well with old favorites such as Icelandic Red, Cell, Fusion, Maple 8 and KG1 giving anglers the best chance of a few fish, precise baiting was the key to success using a combination of pellet and loose boilies.
Temple again threw up a nice thirty in the week supported by a few decent twenties, although overall the fishing was a touch harder. With all areas producing a few fish and with water levels now back pretty much back to normal, the margins were the areas to target with most good baits catching with Cell boilies in particular seemingly doing the business with PVA bags and pellet. However, pop ups, zig rigs and popped up corn are also accounting for a few fish.
PLEASE NOTE: WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
This weeks catches…
Tom Luke’s superb 31lb 8oz mirror which he caught last week from the Old Lake.

Andrew Manning had a brilliant session on the Old Lake catching 11 carp to 24lb. Fishing peg 4 along the front bank, Andrew fished two 18mm Icelandic Red baits tight to the far bank over a bed of 6mm pellet. With most of the action coming between 11pm and 3am, Andy had two fish on at once which included his best fish of the session, a 24lb 8oz mirror.
Dan Martin was another angler on the Old Lake to do well this week catching 4 carp, all mirrors to 20lb 11oz. Fishing peg 75, Dan fished 18mm Icelandic Red baits ¾ of the way to the island with PVA bags filled with crushed boilies and loose baits.
Moving onto this weeks catches, Bury Hill regular Phil Cassidy had a great session on Temple midweek catching a stunning 33lb 13oz mirror. Fishing swim 14, Phil fished a Cell boilie to the mid water, just short of the island catching his fish during the day.

Another regular to score on Temple this weekend was Mark Savage. Fishing swim 9 towards the deeper water, Mark fished Cell boilies on a snowman style blow back rig catching a 26lb 3oz mirror, 21lb 5oz common and 21lb mirror.

Temple regular Dave Povey also managed a 23lb 12oz common during his session on Temple. Dave also caught on Cell boilies, which he fished to the island margins.

Temple regular Rob Savage also managed to scrap a last minute fish during his session, a pretty 22lb common which he caught on a Activ 8 boilie from the margins off peg 6.

BONDS LAKE
With both the smaller lakes continuing to fish well, anglers simply need to choose whether they want to catch carp or tench and crucian before deciding which lake to fish!
With anglers reporting big bags of carp to well over 100lb, Bonds is clearly the choice for anglers wanting to get amongst the hard fighting carp which average 6lb. With all swims fishing well, a medium size groundbait feeder to the island margins still seems to be one of the most productive methods with pellet being the best bait. Saying that, both pole and float tactics are also accounting for good number of fish to low doubles with pellet and corn over pellet accounting for some good bags.
This weeks catches…
Bury Hill regular Klimasauskas Zydrumas from London had a good days sport catching 27 carp to 10lb for a bumper days action. Fishing peg 14, feeder and small yellow boilies was the winning combination.
Tom Jackson from Morden also had a good day when he fished peg 13 catching 12 carp to 10lb 6oz fishing a straight bomb to the island margins catching on sweet corn over pellet.

MILTON LAKE
With cooler weather and plenty of fresh water topping up Milton, the fishing has not surprisingly responded well with some good catches reported from all areas. Whilst tench and crucian are still making up the bulk of the catches, we are starting to see some very good bags of silver fish being caught with both roach and rudd to over 2lb reported as well as the odd perch to 3lb. With pole and float tactics both working well, worm, pellet, paste and maggot all continue to catch with both the pole line and margins accounting for plenty of fish.
This weeks catches…
Steve Mills had a terrific days sport mid week catching 23 crucian, 20 tench and simply loads of quality roach, rudd and perch for well over 100lb. Steve fished peg 22 catching on a short pole to the margins with double caster over micro pellet being the top bait.
Hanwell Prince of Wales Milton Match
With the fish still in a finicky mood last weekend from the recent low air pressures and change in weather, Hanwell Prince of Wales had a very close match on Milton Lake last Sunday. Leading the way was Peter Finch on peg 26 who fished pole and pellet for a mixed bag of crucian, tench and roach for 25lbs 11oz. The only other angler to record over 20lbs was second placed Russ Mud on peg 13 who used similar tactics as the winner.
Result Top 5
1st Peter Finch 25lbs 11oz
2nd Russ Mud 20lbs 2oz
3rd Paul Mason 16lbs 8oz
4th Max Lewis 15lbs 14oz
5th Michel Corsini 15lbs 10oz

Tracy Porcelli travelled from the US to fish at Bury Hill and was rewarded with a good mixedc bag on Milton which included this plump fully scaled mirror.

We do a lot of tuitions at Bury Hill, below is a write up on Jeremy Gambles day’s tuition on Milton, which makes for an interesting read.
Six am is rarely welcomed as a time to be rising – unless you are going fishing! Jeremy Gambles from Fulham reports on a lesson with Russ Evans Bury Hills Fishery’s tackle shop manager and coach.
Meeting Bury Hills coach Russ Evans at 7.30am we quickly headed down to Milton Lake to target tench and crucian carp for a lesson Jeremy’s wife had booked. Jeremy is a life long angler who had drifted away having spent over twenty years in the TA and was keen to bring his rather rusty skills back up to speed and date.
After setting up in Russ’s favoured peg 21, Russ quickly demonstrated how to accurately plumb the depth for the two lines that were to be fished. Then the float was set to register a mere 1/8th of an inch above the surface with a no 8 shot set two inches from the hook and resting on the bottom as a telltale.
Russ then revealed the baits to be used and demonstrated to Jeremy how expander pellets could be rapidly changed with the help of a bait pump from being hard and unappealing to soft and irresistible to the fish to be targeted. As change baits we had plenty of choice with sweet corn, worms and red maggots.
We quickly got into fish with two tench hitting the bait hard within minutes of setting up – one male and a scrappy female. Then the float started quivering, dipping and gently rose before sliding under the surface – a crucian carp -, which revealed its golden sides after a minute or two’s fight before sliding into the net. All the while Russ was passing on pearls of wisdom and discussion ranged from the merits of various floats and types of presentation of the bait. It was too easy to forget there was a float in the water and just soak up Ross’s experience and wealth of knowledge.
Having thought all was going well and that fishing was to be renamed catching I was reminded why I was there by failing to hit bite after bite – very embarrassing under Russ’s sharp eye. With considerable diplomacy he stepped in “to find out what the fish were doing” and (I am glad to report missed one bite himself) before quickly assessing the fault – the bottom shot had shifted. Job done and the rod was handed back for the lesson to continue.
As well the tench and crucians we caught bream, golden rudd, perch and roach. The roach were taking the bait on the drop and spotting how the float registered this happened as another valuable lesson learnt.
What did I learn:
Simple is best, plumb your swim accurately, shot the float down – right down – the importance of float tip colour – and so much more.
Having pottered along with a bit of help from TV programmes, books and magazines I found that there is no substitute for “hands on” help, my bad habits were quickly remedied and new advanced skills absorbed almost without notice.
What did I catch;
I could never have come home before my lesson to say I cannot remember how many fish I caught but this time I genuinely cannot remember; more than 20 tench, over a dozen crucian carp – those beautiful bars of gold - a similar number of roach and bream, a golden rudd, instantly differentiated from the roach by its crimson fins and a perch.
Would I do it again – tomorrow, and I do not know why I did not do it sooner.
Although not having been able to spend much time bank side I had none the less enjoyed reading fishing magazines, books and watching what I could on television. There is however no substitute for direct experience and learning - I improved my angling a quantum step in the space of a morning and feel much more confident and competent in setting out knowing that I will be able to successfully go fishing – but it will never be catching! I cannot recommend the services offered more enthusiastically or genuinely any angler would benefit from some tuition
Thank you Russ, a memorable day and now where can I buy a pellet pump?
