WATER TEMPERATURES

A much better week for fishing, although not much sun and a few showers. Despite the unseasonal temperatures and showers, water temperatures have increased slightly to 21 degree’s whilst oxygen levels continue to sits around 50% saturation, which is pretty normal for the time of year.
Outlook for the week ahead is looking a lot better with temperatures rising to the mid twenties and a lot less rain.

THIS WEEKS FISHING!

Generally a pretty good week for sport helped by the lower temperatures which sat around the high teens early twenties and the odd shower which helped to freshen things up. As such all lakes saw some reasonable action with the bream fishing on the Old Lake providing some particularly good sport with numerous bags to 100lb reported by both bank and boat anglers. Indeed the general fishing on the Old Lake has also been pretty good with some good tench catches reported from both the top of the long bank and the jungle areas.

The carp fishing on the Old Lake has also been pretty good with some good multi catches of up to a dozen fish reported in the week, which again included a few good fish to mid twenties whilst Temple also saw some reasonable action with a couple of thirties reported in the week along with quite a few twenties.

The two smaller lakes also fished a lot better generally this week with Bonds in particular seeing some reasonable sport with anglers reporting catches of small carp to 50/60lb, which included the odd fish to 10lb.

Milton Lake also saw some good fishing this week with good sized roach and rudd helping to make up some excellent mixed bags which also included some jumbo perch to well over 2lb. Tench and crucian also showed well with the margins being the best target points.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

Despite it being mid summer, the general fishing on the Old Lake this week has been excellent with some terrific catches of bream reported as well as a few good tench. With both bank and boat anglers catching well, it has been the middle pegs on both the front and long banks which have produced the best of the sport with some anglers reporting bags of up to 34 bream and weights well over 100lb. Boat anglers have also had another good week with the open water off the point of the island again accounting for some great sport.

With feeder tactics continuing to be the best method, try fishing a small feeder or cage feeder with hair rigged or lassoed 8mm or 10mm pellet on a size 14 or 12 barbless hook 30m out. It is also important to remember to ping out a few pellets around your feeder little and often as this does make a very big difference to the catches.

If boat fishing, try fishing a light pole float set up either on running line or a short pole. The open water is best for this method and boats fishing this method this week have had great results.

With all areas generally fishing well, float fished pellet is again the most productive bait, either hair rigged or lassoed whilst mini boilies, maggot, corn and meat are also catching well.

Colin Peters had a terrific day when he targeted the bream from front bank peg 15. Fishing a small cage feeder, which is currently regarded as the ‘IN’ method, Colin packed his feeder with halibut groundbait fishing 8mm pellets on the hook. Chucking out to 35mts, Colin caught 40 odd bream to 6lb in what was a bumper day’s sport.

Fishing his second private tuition 1 to 1 of the summer with tackle shop manager and Surrey Mirror Angling columnist Russ Evans, Brad Gibbon’s aged 12 targeted the bream on the Old Lake. With feeder being the target of the lesson, conditions were calm and sunny so the fish were in a finicky mood and it proved a real test to tempt them to feed properly. Setting up for the lesson with a feeder rod with 5lbs mainline, a fine tip to pick up the finicky bites plus a combination of small drennan cage feeder, korum quick change bead and a middy size 16 lassoo rig baited initially with 8mm halibut pellets. The ground bait mix of marine halibut and green swinstim had the fish feeding in the peg in no time with small patches of fizzing covering large areas of the surface.

The lesson turned out to be a good indication on how accurate casting is needed in order to catch consistently, which Brad did very well, and how it is necessary to change hookbaits to keep the fish coming. Switching between small mini 8mm and hi viz Ant Bait boilies and 8mm pellets, Brad and his dad John who was fishing on the next peg 29 kept a steady flow of bream and skimmers coming the net with a final score of Brad 24 and John 34. With bream to just under 5lb, a good day indeed considering how finicky the fish were feeding.

Recent matches have also been good on the Old Lake with some very close results making for great matches. Debden AC were the latest club to tackle the front bank with just ounces splitting the top two. B Austin won the day from peg 6 with 51lb 13oz just pippin K Wilker who weighed in 51lb 4oz from peg 1 with both weights coming to feeder and pellet tactics. Third was T Churchill with 46lb 8oz, which he caught on similar tactics from peg 3.

OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

Following the recent excitement of seeing Temple’s 80th thirty of the year banked, the action continued this week with yet another two thirties reported as well as quite a few twenties whilst the fishing on the Old Lake also continued in much the same vein with yet more multi bags caught which included some good sized fish to mid twenties.

Despite being a little quieter on Temple than in recent weeks, quite a few fish were reported this week which included a 34lb mirror, 32lb 2oz common as well as half a dozen twenties to 28lb 4oz. With both banks seeing some good action, the fish remain well spread with the middle pegs probably fishing the best overall with the island margins always a popular area to try. Baits are again varied with both corn, boilies and pop up’s catching.

The Old Lake has also seen some good catches this week with a number of anglers reporting catches of up to 15 fish which included fish to mid twenties. Again, all areas are seeing some sport, although the top end of the long bank and middle pegs on the island bank have all been producing some good sport. Whilst tactics and baits remain much the same as in previous weeks with Icelandic Red boilies continuing to take a lot of beating although Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies are also catching well as will most good quality baits, popped up corn and pop ups are also worth a go!
This weeks catches

Steve Puplett had a good session on Temple catching 4 fish topped by two tone weighing 34lb. Fishing peg 13, Steve fished popped up corn to the margins catching mirrors weighing 21lb, 27lb 2oz, 28lb 4oz and two tone weighing 34lb.

Temple regular Sean Howard also managed a couple of fish this week, a 23lb 8oz common during his visit last weekend and a stonking 32lb 20z common this weekend. Fishing his trademark glugged corn to the island margins Sean caught his smaller common from swim 4 and his most recent thirty from swim 14.

Ex Bury Hill bailiff Graham Schilling returned to Bury Hill this week grabbing the opportunity to bag a 23lb mirror from peg 9. Graham fished popped up corn to the island margins.

On the Old Lake it was Paul Benefield who led the action this week catching a dozen or so fish from peg 37. Fishing a homemade boilie to the open water, Paul caught steadily throughout his 24-hour session, which included mirrors weighing 23lb and 25lb.

Another angler on the Old Lake to do well this week was Bury Hill’s tackle shop manager Russ Evans. Fishing peg 27, Russ fished Icelandic Red baits to the open water catching 7 or so fish during his overnight session topped by a near twenty.

Two anglers to catch the week before last on Temple were Kier Burwood who managed a 31lb 8oz mirror and James Poole who caught a 26lb mirror. See pictures below.

BONDS LAKE

Another good week on Bonds with some good catches reported by both pleasure and club anglers alike. Although no huge weights, a lot of anglers reported bags up to 15 or so carp, which averaged 6lb to 7lb with the odd bigger bag reported.

With all methods working, feeder tactics continue to be the most consistent method with pellet and mini boilies continuing to account for good numbers of fish. The secret is to fish tight to the island margins pinging loose pellet out singularly all the time. If you ask in the tackle shop, we now have a leaflet describing the ‘in’ method on Bonds.
This weeks catches

Following some recent advice from our tackle shop manager Russ Evans on how to tackle and catch some nice carp in Bonds Lake, Matt Fuller and his friend Jude from Reigate in Surrey have been getting in amongst the action ever since as this photo of Matt's 9 pounder reveals. One of 6 fish on his visit last week, this cracking looking fish set a new PB for Matt who has only just recently taken up coarse fishing, looks like he is starting to get the angling bug in a big way.

Another angler to catch on Bonds this week was Hugh Moor. Fishing the point, Hugh also fished a small feeder to the island margins catching 14 carp to 9lb plus a few decent roach and skimmers on 6mm pellet.

Whilst recent matches on Bonds have been a little disappointing, Boxmoor had a reasonable day last week with Tim Irvine winning the day with 40lbs from peg 13, Roy Miller was second with 30lb 10oz taken from peg 10 whilst Mick Taylor was third with 21lb 10oz caught from peg 11.

MILTON LAKE

Milton Lake saw another good weeks catches reported with plenty of tench and crucian showing which helped make up some good mixed weights which also included quality roach and rudd.

As is normal for this time of year, the margins are the obvious place to target although the float and pole line is also producing. With all methods working, baits remain much the same as in previous weeks with hard drilled and soft pellet over small pellet working well along with hair rigged pellet and mini boilies with maggot, caster, worm and corn also catching.
This weeks catches

Simon Hall had a cracking day early week bagging 20 or so tench and crucian as well as 30lb of quality roach and rudd on soft pellet fished over loose micro pellet catching from the margins.

Matt Fuller who has only just taken up fishing also had some good days on Milton in recent weeks catching both small carp and tench. Fishing peg 23 last week, Matt fished a small feeder close to the island margins catching carp and tench on corn and pellet.
