HUGE STOCKING PROGRAMME NOW COMPLETE!

This winter’s huge stocking program is now complete. Old Bury Hill Lake has seen some cracking tench stocked from Temple Lake as well as a good number of bream and skimmers. In turn, following the recent dredging, Milton Lake has seen most of the carp removed which we have replaced with 500 small tench, over 3000 crucian and simply loads of quality roach, rudd, some gigantic perch as well as a few bream and skimmers. Bonds Lake has also seen a further stocking of small carp from Milton as well as a few roach, rudd and skimmers.

WATER TEMPERATURES

Following a pretty wet cold week, it was no surprise to see water temperatures come under pressure although amazingly we only saw a small drop of 0.5 on the week to 9.5 degree’s. Not surprisingly, oxygen levels remained high at around 75%.

Outlook for the week ahead is still a bit mixed with some rain forecast.

THIS WEEKS FISHING!

Whilst the weather is holding the best of the spring fishing back, anglers are catching a few fish on all the lakes with quite a few carp now showing on the Old Lake and some excellent bags reported from Milton Lake.

Not surprisingly, bream and skimmers dominated the catches on the Old Lake again this week, although there were a few more tench reported, which is a sure sign that spring is on the way. The carp fishing on the Old Lake also continued to improve with quite a few anglers reporting some reasonable fishing with one angler catching 23 fish to 23lb.

Milton Lake again saw some terrific fishing with mixed bags to well over 50lb reported again this week with tench, crucian, roach, rudd, bream and perch all showing well. Bonds Lake also saw sport pick up with anglers catching up to a dozen carp apiece to 8lb in nets to 50lb plus.

Whilst the fishing on Temple remains somewhat tough, a couple of fish have been reported this week, a cracking 34lb 1oz mirror and a mint 32lb 12oz common.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING

Despite a pretty wet cold week, the fishing has held up OK with bream and skimmers dominating the catches, although there are a few tench now showing which is a sure sign that spring is finally on its way.

Both the front bank and long bank are producing fish with the middle pegs on both banks seemingly fishing the best, although the early pegs are also worth a go! With bags to 90lb reported by one or two anglers, most anglers are catching 30lb to 40lb bags with the pole, waggler and feeder all catching well given the right swim. Saying that, ground bait feeder and soft pellet is definitely worth a go! Bait wise, red maggot and small pellet continue to be the best baits, as water temperatures start to increase, expect to see larger baits such as paste, corn and mini boilies start to catch a few better fish.
This week catches…

Bury Hill regular Mike Head had another brilliant days sport on the long bank catching 31 bream to 4lb and a bonus tench of 3lb for close to 100lb. Fishing peg 41, Mike fished a small open end feeder packed full of ground bait and 3mm pellet catching on 8mm soft pellet. This was Mikes second visit this week catching 19 bream and 2 tench during his earlier session when he alternated between feeder and pole catching on pellet, mini boilies and maggot.

Last weeks Royal Oak match on the front bank also fished pretty well for the conditions. Drawn on the front bank, Rob Harvey won the day from peg 14 with 36lb 11oz of bream and skimmers which he caught alternating the feeder and pole catching on worm and caster. Second place went to John Bassett who caught 30lb 3oz of bream and skimmers on the feeder catching on maggot from peg 11 whilst third place went to Roger Thorpe who also caught on maggot and feeder weighing in 29lb 12oz from peg 6.

OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP

The good news on the carp front is that despite the weather the Old Lake has at last started to see a few reasonable fish show with some anglers catching up to 23 fish per session whilst Temple has seen another two thirties caught this week.

Anyone wanting to catch a few fish would be well advised to give the Old Lake a go! With anglers bagging up to 23 fish a session, there has been a good number of better fish caught with the odd fish just shy of the mid twenties mark. Whilst the fish are well spread out, it was the deeper water pegs again this week that produced the best of the fishing, although the middle and early pegs are certainly worth a go! Tactics and baits on the Old Lake remain much the same as in recent weeks with ledger and PVA bags clearly the way to go.

Bait wise, pretty well any good bait will work although the old favorites such as Icelandic Red, Cell, Fusion, Maple 8 and KG1 will all give you an edge! It is also worth trying one or two of the new boilies hitting the market and particularly the much talked about Marukyu bait range, which includes a new scientifically, produced range of boilies.

As reported last week, boat anglers have also been catching a few carp from the jungle with standard boat tactics of float, boilies and large pellet working. Although nothing huge, anglers have been catching up to 8 fish a day, the best upper doubles.

Whilst Temple Lake remains tough, there were another two fish reported this week, a 34lb 1oz mirror and 32lb 12oz common making the effort well worth it. Whilst tactics and baits remain very open, any good quality boilie will potentially catch, particularly when tipped with corn and fished with a PVA bag filled with bait. Clearly, once water temperatures start to increase, expect to see catches increase.

This week catches…

Matt Howe was the lucky angler to bag a Temple thirty this week, this time a stunning big mirror weighing a hefty 34lb 1oz. Matt initially started his session off on the Old Lake, but decided to switch to Temple Lake Sunday afternoon slotting into peg 13 on the back bank. Fishing two small 10mm boilies on a hair tight to the reeds by the island, Matt put out a few free offerings catching his new PB and first Temple carp just 30 minutes after moving.

The second thirty of the week was caught by Steve White a hardened Temple angler on his first visit since rejoining. Fishing peg 1, Steve fished a Mainline Milky Toffee pop up to the island margins catching his stunning 32lb 12oz common unconventionally over a bed of spod mix.

As reported above, the Old Lake has started to produce some really big catches this past week or so with a few anglers finding some pretty good early spring action despite the weather.

Joe Levy was one such angler bagging 23 fish during his 48-hour Old Lake session early week. Fishing peg 29, Joe from North Cheam fished 15mm Fusion boilies over a bed of Fusion and 10mm Cell boilies baiting an open water area in front of him. Including a good number of upper doubles, Joe’s best fish was a stunning 22lb 8oz mirror.

Another couple of anglers to do well on the Old Lake were Ben Froud and Adam Porter. Fishing pegs 16 and 17, Ben managed three fish during his session, which included a 21lb 8oz mirror and 17lb 8oz leather. Fishing just 3m off the point of the island, Ben caught all his fish on Cell boilies, which he fished over hemp and pellet. Adam also found the bigger fish active catching a 25lb common as part of his bag catching on Icelandic Red baits which he also fished over a bed of pellet and hemp.

Other anglers to catch on the Old Lake this week were David and 5-year-old Sam Maskall who fished peg 27 catching six carp to 19lb 4oz on 16mm Icelandic Red baits. Ray Lawn and Wayne Thompson also managed 7 carp to 16lb 8oz during their session. The pair fished pegs 2 and 3 catching on Icelandic Red and Peach and Mango boilies.

BONDS LAKE

Following the dredging work, Bonds is now settling down with anglers starting to catch reasonable numbers of fish with both float and feeder tactics accounting for up to a dozen or so fish to 10lb. With both the island margins and pole line producing, maggot and pellet seem to be the best baits with open feeder also working.
This weeks catches…

Terry Marsh had a good day sport catching 11 carp to 8lb on a small open feeder, which he fished to the island margins. Fishing small 6mm soft pellet on the hook, Terry caught all of his fish just 1m off the margins from peg 4.

MILTON LAKE

Another cracking week on Milton with anglers bagging up to 70lb mixed bags which includes tench and crucian as well as roach, rudd, perch and bream.

With all areas producing a few fish, pole and float tactics are definitely the way to go with both pellet and maggot catching with both the pole line and margins accounting for a few fish.
This weeks catches…

Bill Dorrofield and Darren Wagstaff both from Rickmansworth, Herts had a brilliant day this week despite the rain catching upwards of 70lb each. Fishing pegs 19 and 20, the pair both fished pole tactics close in catching big crucians, quality roach and rudd and simply loads of tench on maggot and pellet.

Tommy Hall from Dorking also did well catching a 20lb plus bag which included a brace of 5lb tench and some quality roach, rudd and perch. Tommy caught all his fish on the waggler catching on soft pellet feeding small pellet. Chris Farrell from Bethnal Green also had a good day bagging a mixed bag including bream to 4lb 8oz, roach to 1lb 8oz and tench to 3lb 8oz. Chris float fished maggot and pellet to the margins.

Despite some pretty grim weather and torrential rain, Portsmouth and District AS had a thoroughly enjoyable days fishing on Milton Lake last weekend as reported by their match secretary Alan Templeman. Winner of their latest club match was Rodd Legg who from peg 20 scaled a mixed bag of crucians, roach, tench and rudd on the pole for a nice 16-4-0 using red maggot as hook bait over a steady trickle of maggot loose feed. Some five pegs away on peg 15 Adrian Martin was a close up second with a weight of 14-7-0 which again consisted of a mixed bag all on the pole and red maggot. Alan himself got in on the act from with 14-2-0 whilst leading lady on the day was Lorraine Talbot with 10-11-0. Alan reported that 6-7lbs of quality roach and small tench made up a good majority of the other anglers weights and they are already planning a return trip soon.

Result (Top 4)
1st Rod Legg 16-4-0
2nd Adrian Martin 14-7-0
3rd Alan Templeman 14-2-0
4th Lorraine Talbot 10-11-0
