WATER TEMPERATURES
A good week weather wise, although the early week saw some heavy showers. A few good days of sun helped water temperatures to a new high of 19 degree’s whilst oxygen levels remained around 30%, which is normal for the time of year. Outlook for the week ahead lots of sun forecast, so perfect weather for a day’s fishing.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
With most of the spawning now finished, all lakes have fished well this week as water temperatures continue to increase topping 19 degree’s for the first time this year.
Starting with the small lakes this week, both Bonds and Milton Lakes produced some great sport this week with Bonds again seeing large nets of small carp being caught from all banks with all methods and baits working. This was also repeated on Milton Lake where some good bags of tench and crucian were reported along with plenty of silver fish.
The general fishing on the Old Lake has also been pretty good with plenty of bream and tench showing from all around the lake whilst boat anglers are also finding a few good sized carp and even the odd big crucian.
The carp fishing has also picked up following the recent spawning with good numbers of fish to mid twenties being reported from the Old Lake whilst Temple once again bounced back from spawning with 5 thirties and a number of twenties reported following a tough week previous.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Whilst spawning and heavy rain early week did make for a tough start to the week, as the sun came out and water temperatures started to rise the fishing responded with some very good nets of bream and tench reported by both bank and boat anglers which included fish to 9lb.
Again, with the fish well spread, all areas seem to be producing a few fish, although the middle pegs along both the front and long banks seem to be fishing particularly well with good numbers of bream and tench showing in nets to over 100lb to both pole, float and feeder tactics.
Boat anglers are also finding some good sport from the island margins and jungle with plenty of bream and tench being caught with individual fish to 9lb being reported in bags to well over 100lb, which also includes some reasonable carp to just over 20lb.
With all methods working, the pole and waggler probably have the edge with maggot, caster, worm and soft pellet all catching, although it is always worth trying some of the larger baits such as corn, meat, mini boilies and pellet, which are taking the bigger fish. Indeed tackle shop manager Russ Evans had a tuition session mid week catching loads of bream on large halibut pellets as well as multi coloured pellet.
This weeks catches
Fishing under the guidance of Russ Evans, Jim Mc Dowell from West Wickham fished a feeder from front bank peg 15 catching 20 plus bream to 5lb for a good 80lb plus bag. Catching on large halibut pellet and corn, Jim also added pellet to his ground bait feeder.
Bury Hill regular Mark Pearson from Croydon had an unbelievable day on the boats mid week when he fished the jungle. Float fishing bread flake over small pellet, Mark caught 14 carp to over twenty pounds, topping his catch off with a stunning 21lb 10oz common.
Another angler to bag up on the bream and tench this was Chris Taylor. Fishing peg 34 along the long bank, Chris fished a 12m pole catching on large soft pellet over 3mm pellet. Chris’s best bream tipped the scales at 6lb 8oz whilst his best tench topped 8lb.
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Last week saw some tough fishing on both the Old Lake and Temple Lake for the carp, however as we headed into this week things changed with a run of thirties being reported from Temple whilst the Old Lake saw some good mid week multi bags reported following earlier spawning.
Turning to Temple first, its was late Sunday and into Monday before the action started with 4 thirties being reported by Monday night and a further fish
Tactics and baits remain much the same as in previous weeks on both lakes, with all banks fishing pretty well on the Old Lake but particularly the top end of the long bank and island margins. Bait wise, whilst Icelandic Red still takes a lot of beating, all good quality baits are catching with Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies all worth a try as are the new Cotswold baits and the new Terry Hearn Red Fish boilies and Dynamites Spicy Tuna & Sweet Chilli boilies. The odd fish is also coming out on fake corn and pop ups as anglers start to imitate their success from Temple.
Tactics and baits also remain much the same on Temple with the margins still being favorite although the open water areas are also producing a few fish. With popped up “glugged corn” still taking a lot of fish, most good quality baits will work, so keep an open mind as to baits and areas.
This weeks catches
Temple guru Sean Howard thought he was in for a blank last weekend, as by Sunday Temple like the Old Lake had fished hard owing to the fish spawning. However, things quickly changed Monday following the capture of 4 Temple thirties in quick succession. Moreover, the latest run of thirties brings the total number of thirties caught from Temple to 60, which given the fact that nothing came out in January or February owing to the ice and snow, that's 60 thirties in just 3 months, which is superb fishing by any standards
Fishing swim 12 on the back bank, Sean switched hook baits between glugged popped up corn and Scopex Squid boilies, catching 2 fish on each bait from the island margins. With all his fish coming in a hectic 5-hour period Monday morning, Sean ended his session with a 33lb 11oz big scaled mirror, 32lb 7oz common, 31lb 5oz mirror and a 20lb 6oz common.
Another angler to make the most of the feeding frenzy on Temple last Monday was Vernon Ellis who banked 3 fish which included 'two tone' weighing 34lb 8oz. Fishing swim 10, Vernon fished popped up corn to the island margins catching Two Tone as well as mirrors weighing 22lb and 21lb 8oz.
With a steady flow of catches reported throughout the week, this weekend again saw some excellent BIG FISH action with Roy Carslake bagging a stunning 33lb 8oz mirror. Fishing swim 13, Roy fished pop up corn, which he fished over pellet close to the island margins.
Temple regular Paul Pitchley also had a good session over the weekend catching a cracking 32lb 8oz common. Fishing swim 10, Paul also fished popped corn catching his fish during the night from close to the margins.
Another angler to catch was Ed Mason, fishing swim 8, Ed also fished popped up corn to the island margins landing a brace of twenties, a 21lb 10oz mirror and 21lb 8oz common as well as a 25lb 10oz common.
Following the capture of the Italian last week which weighed 34lb 8oz, Vernon Ellis returned this catching 4 twenties, 3 mirrors which weighed 21lb, 24lb 2oz, 24lb 4oz and a common weighing 24lb 8oz. Fishing peg 10, all of Vernon’s fish fell to popped up corn fished to the island margins.
The carp fishing on the Old Lake also bounced back this week with a number of multi bags reported which included a few twenties. Wendy Gatford managed a 22lb common during her recent session on peg 36, which she caught on an Icelandic Red boilie fished over crushed boilies, hemp and pellet.
Another angler on the Old Lake to catch was Mike Tyler, fishing peg 15, Mike fished a 20mm KG1 bait to the point of the island catching 3 upper doubles and a 23lb mirror. Bury Hill regular Scott Maslen also grabbed a quick session midweek catching half a dozen fish from peg 30 which included two twenties. Scott fished Richworth baits close to the island catching on a snowman rig.
Stu Jewell managed a new PB in the shape of a 10lb common. Fishing under the supervision of Rob Hawkins, Stu fished an Icelandic Red bait to the open water catching over crushed boilies and hemp.
BONDS LAKE
With the spawning pretty well over, Bonds fished well this week with some good nets of carp reported from all areas, but particularly the road bank. At this time of year all methods are working although float and pole are probably the most popular methods with anglers reporting bags to 100lb. Regarding baits, maggot and soft pellet are catching well although mini boilies, corn and soft paste baits are all worth a go. The fish are also now up in the water, so also try suspending your baits with regular feed.
This weeks catches
Gerry Holmes had a great days sport mid week, catching 30 plus carp to 8lb on pole and pellet tactics. Fishing peg 3, Gerry fished tight on the bottom to start with catching on 8mm pellets, however as the fish moved onto his feed, he started to catch up in the water eventually taking most of his fish just 18” deep.
MILTON LAKE
With the spawning all but finished, Milton Lake also fished well this week with good numbers of tench and crucian being caught as well as some good-sized rudd and roach. With the best of the action coming to pole and float tactics, maggot, caster and worm all catching, with pellet, paste and corn taking the better fish which not only included the odd tench to 7lb plus but a few hefty crucian with a 3lb 10oz fish reported by one angler.
This weeks catches
Matthew Beard’s switch from the Old Lake to Milton Lake paid dividends when his rod was pulled over resulting in a huge 3lb 10oz crucian. Matthew float fished corn to the margins also catching crucian and tench.
