WATER TEMPERATURES
Another pretty good week all in all, the threatened cold weather luckily stayed to the east and the north with temperatures again hitting 12 degree’s, yesterday which helped water temperatures creep up further up to 8.5 degree’s whilst oxygen levels remained constant at around 30%.
Outlook for the week ahead is much the same with westerly and southerly winds helping to ensure that temperatures stay close to double figures.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
Generally another very good week with all lakes producing some excellent sport. Whilst the predator fishing has been pretty good as we head into the last week of the season with another three or four BIG zander banked and with good numbers of pike to mid doubles, it has been the general fishing that has really taken off this week with both the Old Lake as well as Bonds and Milton Lake fishing extremely well. Indeed, the Old Lake has seen further ton up bags of tench and bream reported whilst Milton has seen a few big perch reported along with some good roach bags and even a few tench. Sport on Bonds has also been very good with 50lb bags of carp to 10lb reported.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – PREDATOR FISHING
A good week overall with another three or four BIG zander reported as the predator season draws to a close (Season closes March 14th). Best fish on the Zed front this week was a 12lb 6oz specimen, which surprisingly was not in spawn, although a lot of the fish reported have been heavily in spawn. The pike have also made a good show this week with quite a few doubles reported with lots of smaller fish, which are probably the new stockings.
Whilst all banks have again produced a few fish, the top end of the shallow water areas such as the top end of the long bank and end of the front bank seems to be where most of the action. Tactics remain much the same as in previous weeks with small baits definitely working better than larger baits with diagonal head and tail sections of both sea and freshwater baits working well, although interestingly sea baits continue to account for a lot of the big zeds. Single hook rigs are also taking a few more fish with hair rigs also making hooking easier and safer. These tactics, will not only catch pike and zander, but will improve takes and moreover help to avoid a deep hooked fish.
Ian Welch’s pages in the Anglers Mail recently featured Zander fishing at Bury Hill, see link below.

Don’t forget that the predator session ends on the 14th March.

Gary Newman from the Anglers Mail has been trying for a new zed PB this season coming close with zander to 12lb 15oz. However braving the gale conditions earlier in the week, Gary managed yet another double from the top of the Long Bank, a 12lb 6oz specimen which fell to a sea bait fished on single hook rig.
Another angler targeting the big zeds this week was Colin Allchin, who despite the bright sunshine and flat calm conditions did manage two pike from peg 24, weighing 8lb and 13lb. Both fish were caught on float ledgered mackerel tail. Colin also had a number of abortive takes, which he assumed were small zeds with eyes bigger than their tums.
The last predator course of the season took place yesterday when 12 anglers hit the bank under the watchful eye of Eric Bailey. Fishing the top end of the long bank, the group fished both float and ledger tactics using small roach dead baits. Although there were a few missed runs, the group landed 8 pike between them to just under 10lb.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Another exceptional week on the Old Lake with a number of anglers reporting bags of tench and bream to well over 100lb. Again most of the action was from the early swims along the front and long banks although the thirties along the long bank have been the pegs producing the really big weights again this week.
Whilst feeder and float tactics have been catching well with small open-end groundbait feeder working particularly well, pole tactics have again been the winning method with maggot, caster and worm all catching, although larger baits such as corn, hair rigged punched meat and banded pellet are also working, particularly for the bigger fish. Certainly maggot fished over 3mm Green Swim Stim pellet has been a winning combination.

Having read last weeks catch report details, Andrew Castle decided to try his luck for the tench and bream early week. Fishing peg 28, Andrew fished a 12m pole catching 16 bream to 5lb and 17 tench to just under 6lb. Fishing a very fine pole float, Andrew fished double red maggot over small feed pellets.
Roving Anglers Mail reporters Bill and Virginia Rusher also made a visit in the week and headed straight for the hot pegs 29 and 30. Fishing both feeder and float tactics with maggot on the hook, the pair managed half a dozen or so tench and 15 odd bream for a good 80lb bag.
Local angler Haydon Woods who has already managed a couple of big bags of tench and bream, changed tactics and fished peg 20 in the week catching a few bream and a couple of tench. Haydon again fished a 12m pole cupping in SwimStim green 3mm pellet with double maggot on the hook.
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE - CARP
Although the carp fishing has been on a bit of a see-saw Recently, the general carp fishing this week has again been pretty good with some good multi bags reported from the Old Lake which included fish to early twenties as well as a fish or two from Temple.
On the Old Lake it has been the shallow water pegs which have seen most of the action with the early pegs along the front bank fishing particularly well with a couple of anglers bagging close to ten or so fish. Whilst pretty much any good quality bait will catch, Icelandic Red, Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies are all worth a go as are some of the new Cotswold baits.
On Temple all areas of the lake have produced a few fish which shows that they are at last on the move. Again small baits have proved most successful with small broken sections of cream pop ups working particularly well as well as the tried and tested glugged plastic corn although all quality baits will catch the secret being not to over do the feeding and to think outside of the box.

Whilst there have been no further thirties reported this week, Sean Howard managed a pretty 27lb 4oz common from Temples peg 12 catching on glugged corn which he fished to the island margins. Robin Ellis also managed a couple of fish to similar tactics during his two visits, a 20lb 4oz common which he caught from swim 4 and a 27lb 4oz mirror from swim 12.
On the Old Lake Gavin Campbell had another good session catching 9 carp to 22lb. Fishing a Scopex Squid Nash Bait, Gavin fished peg 38 catching from the open water. Another angler on the Old Lake to catch was Ed Mason, fishing a fruit boilie over pellet, Ed fished the middle of the front bank catching 6 fish to upper doubles and would have caught more but for the fact that he was plagued by bream.
Please Note!
Temple Lake can only be fished by Specimen Carp Members who are also able to night fish the Old Lake. With membership numbers strictly limited to anglers with some experience of catching bigger fish, membership includes Old Bury Hill Lake and Temple Lake, our new specimen carp lake. Following recent stockings, Temple currently holds just under a 100 fish to upper thirties, which now includes 35 known thirties, the average size is close to 29lb. To date there has been a waiting list to join, however there is a small number of places available for 2009 which will be available on a first come first served basis, anyone interested should contact David or Jane on 01306 877540, or download an application form from our website.

BONDS LAKE
Another good week on Bonds with anglers reporting bags of carp to 50lb plus. With both float and feeder tactics working and smaller baits such as maggot catching well, the best of the sport has come from the road bank and back banks.
MILTON LAKE
Another great week on Milton with a number of anglers reporting decent bags of perch, roach and tench. Indeed the week saw perch close to 4lb caught and tench to 5lb.Most methods appear to be working with the best of the action coming to pole and feeder tactics with maggot, caster and worm all catching.
This weeks catches
Russ Evan s grabbed a quick day on Milton mid week, fishing a pole to the reeds from peg 1, Russ caught a 50lb bag of tench, perch and roach on maggot.
Two anglers who had a good session early week were Simon Bibert and Doug Wilson. Fishing peg 3, the pair fished a waggler to the open water with single white maggot on the hook catching roach to 1lb 12oz, tench to 4lb and perch to 2lb as well as plenty of rudd.
