2010 HUGE STOCKING PROGRAMME NOW COMPLETE!
2010’s huge stocking program is now complete following the complete dredging of both Bonds and Milton Lakes. Old Bury Hill Lake has seen a large number of big tench stocked as well as a good number of bream and skimmers. Milton Lake has seen most of the carp removed which we have replaced with 500 small tench, over 3500 crucian and simply loads of quality roach, rudd, some gigantic perch as well as a few bream and skimmers. Bonds Lake has also seen a further stocking of small carp from Milton as well as a few roach, rudd and skimmers.
WATER TEMPERATURES
A pretty good week overall, with a little less sun making for more comfortable fishing conditions. Water temperatures continue to sit around the early/mid twenties 21/24 degree’s whilst oxygen levels continue to be a bit up and down with morning readings being around 40% to 50%, which is normal for this time of year with afternoon reading peaking at around 80/100+%.
Outlook for the week ahead is much the same, staying cool for the weekend with temperatures sitting around the early twenties but expected to increase to the mid twenties during the early part of next week!
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
The weeks fishing has again been brilliant for the time of year with all the lakes producing some excellent sport and catches!
The bream and tench on the Old Lake were again in an obliging mood with anglers reporting bags to 100lb, which included good numbers of tench with the odd fish to 8lb reported. Recent matches have also fished well with this weeks open seeing a good number of nets over 40lb.
Following the dredging and restocking of Bonds and Milton Lakes, the fishing continues to go from strength to strength with most anglers reporting bumper hauls. Milton again saw good numbers of tench and crucian caught in nets to over 100lb which also included some cracking roach and rudd to 2lb, whilst Bonds also continued to provide great sport with pleasure bags of carp to over 100lb and match weights again topping 80lb.
Whilst Temple has seen most of the action over the past few weeks, this week saw some terrific catches from the Old Lake with anglers reporting non-stop action with a few decent twenties also making a show. In turn, Temple has also fished well this week, with three thirties and a dozen or so twenties reported.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Another cool week made for some great fishing with pleasure anglers and match men alike reporting some great sport. With the fish generally more widespread, this made for better overall catches and although we did not see so many 100lb bags reported, the fishing overall was probably better for everyone.
The cooler, overcast weather certainly put the fish in a feeding mode with all day action experienced by many. With both the front and long banks both producing their fair share of catches, it was surprisingly the deeper water swims which saw the best of the fishing this week with some anglers reporting some very big weights. With methods and baits much the same as last week, both the pole, float and feeder have are all accounted for some good catches with a variety of baits working on the day, although pellet and corn continue to be the top baits.
Whilst there are still plenty of fish down the jungle, boat anglers have started to catch some big bags of bream from the open water marks with the area between the point of the island and entrance to the jungle being particularly good for bream and a few tench with pellet and float tactics being the key to success.
This weeks catches…
Following last weeks bumper bag of bream, Bury Hill regular Ray Parker from Guildford returned to have another go opting this time to fish peg 13 on the front bank. Fishing both the pole and feeder, it was the feeder to the open water that caught best. Ray fished 6mm soft hooker pellets on the hook packing his open end feeder with 8mm pellet and groundbait which resulted in 17 fish which included bream to 5lb and tench to 5lb 8oz.
Another angler to have a good day targeting the bream on the Old Lake was Valentino. Fishing peg 10, Valentino fished a cage feeder packed with green betain groundbait with 8 and 10mm pellet, which he fished on a lasso rig. Valentino ended his day with 15 bream to 5lb plus with the smallest fish going 4lb.
Recent match weights on the Old Lake have also been excellent with quite a few big nets reported in recent weeks and this weeks Bury Hill Open on the front bank was one such match, see details below.
Harrison leads the way again on front bank.
The latest Bury Hill midweek open took place on the front bank this week with 14 anglers hoping to get amongst the feeding bream shoals. Plenty of fish were fizzing all along the match length on both the pole and feeder lines so it was no surprise to see all of the anglers set up their tackle accordingly.
The first hour as usual was slow going but as the bream started to get their heads down the bites started to come and the catch rates increased to provide what was a very close match. With the sun coming in and out behind some big clouds the fish were going on and off providing frantic sport followed by spells of no action, but those who managed to stick with it and concentrate were the ones who collected the envelopes at the end of the match.
Terry Harrison was on peg 20 and on his pole line caught steady for most of the match to put a useful all bream bag in the net for 48lbs 1oz with his biggest slab going around 4lbs. This was Terry’s second match win on the trot catching all his fish on soft pellets over feed pellet and small balls of ground bait.
Second on nearby peg 22 was England star Steve Gardener who fished the long pole and a light float rig with pellet and ground bait for 46lbs 1oz of bream and skimmers.
Right up the other end of the bank was Fred Brown on peg 2 who just missed pippin Steve with 45lbs 14oz of pole and feeder caught bream after alternating between hair rigged bits of corn and pellet.
Ian Farmer in fourth place, again was not far behind from peg 4 with 43lbs 6oz of bream on the pole and pellets combo and considering fifth and sixth placed anglers Jaime Matthews and Colin Burton recorded weights of 42lbs 11oz and 39lbs 10oz, less than 10lbs split the top 6, it was that close.
Result: Top 6 (14 fished)
1st Terry Harrison (Dorking) 48-1-0
2nd Steve Gardener (Dorking) 46-1-0
3rd Fred Brown (Monks F1) 45-14-0
4th Ian Farmer (Priory AC) 43-6-0
5th Jaime Matthews (Banstead) 42-11-0
6th Colin Burton (NDP10) 39-10-0
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Whilst the hot summer months are not generally noted for providing the best carp fishing conditions, the cooler weather we have experienced in recent weeks has certainly helped catches with both Temple and the Old Lake producing some excellent sport.
Whilst Temple has produced some exceptional sport this year, it has been the Old Lake that has bounced this week with a number of anglers reporting some very good non stop sport which have included quite a few decent fish to mid twenties. With all areas producing a few fish, the island margins remain one of the key areas to target.
Regarding method and baits, PVA bags are clearly the way to go with most good baits working with old favorites such as Icelandic Red, Cell, Fusion, Maple 8 and KG1 giving anglers the edge, although Trigger has also accounted for quite a few fish this week!
Whilst the early part of the week saw the fishing slow a little on Temple, the later part of the week saw the fishing improve no end with three thirties reported along with 10 or so twenties at the weekend. With most good baits working, boilies continue their come back with Cell boilies in particular seemingly doing the business with PVA bags and pellet. However, pop ups, zig rigs and popped up corn have also accounted for a few fish.
PLEASE NOTE: WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
This weeks catches…
With action hotting up on the Old Lake, a number of anglers have reported bumper catches with a few catching upwards of 10 fish or so to mid twenties. Kieran Delia was one angler who grabbed a quick midweek session catching 8 fish from peg 71 which included two good mirrors weighing 21lb 8oz and 20lb 1oz. All of Kieran’s fish were caught on Trigger baits.
Another angler to do well on the Old Lake was Ian Mann who managed 11 fish during his session. Fishing peg 3, Ian fished a 18mm Icelandic Red boilie to the open water with his best fish, a pretty mirror going 24lb 14oz.
Turning to Temple, below are pictures of Ray Harding’s 34lb mirror and his 25lb 11oz mirror, which he caught last week.
Moving on with this weeks catches, Temple guru Sean Howard had a good session this weekend catching a cracking 32lb 4oz mirror and 28lb common. With boilies becoming more the ‘in’ bait on Temple this year, Sean opted for the ever popular Cell boilies fishing single baits with PVA bags to the open water. Below are also pictures of Sean’s mirrors from his last session, which weighed 25lb 10oz and 22lb 8oz.
Following the capture of a cracking 31lb 12oz mirror last week, Tony Watson returned this week to catch a brace of big commons weighing 28lb 4oz and 27lb. Fishing peg 11, Tony caught both his fish on Cell boilies which he fished to the island channel. Tony ended his session with a scraper twenty, a mirror weighing 18lb 14oz.
Another angler to find consistent sport on Temple this week was Dave Povey who has so far managed 4 fish, three from a mid-week session and one from his latest weekend session, With a mix of mirrors and commons, Dave managed a 27lb 8oz mirror, 26lb 8oz common, 25lb common and 24lb 8oz mirror. Fishing pegs 8 and 10, all of Dave’s fish fell to Cell boilies, which he fished to the island margins.
Another couple of anglers to score on Temple this week was father and son duo Barry O’Conner and son Ben. Fishing swim 15 and 13, the pair who are writing an article for Carp Talk have so far reported three fish, a brace of mirrors weighing 33lb 2oz and 25lb 5oz for Barry and a 25lb 8oz mirror for Ben. All of their fish fell to Cell and Tutti Frutti Mainline baits.
BONDS LAKE
Bonds action continued this week on Bonds with yet more hefty carp catches reported by anglers of all abilities with pleasure bags to well over 100lb and match nets to 50lb reported.
With all areas fishing well, feeder to the island margins seems to be working particularly well with pellet accounting for most of the fish. Saying that, both pole and float tactics are also accounting for good number of fish to low doubles with pellet and corn over pellet being the best baits.
This weeks catches…
Paul Clarke had a brilliant day on Bonds catching 24 carp to 11lb for a good 100lb catch from peg 6. Fishing a large open feeder packed with groundbait and pellet to the island margins, Paul caught steadily throughout the day catching on large 8mm pellet which he fished on a lasso rig and 12 hook.
Another angler to do well on Bonds this week was first time visitor Steve Mills who had travelled to Bury Hill from Essex. Having taken advice from Russ in the tackle shop, Steve opted to fish peg 2 fishing a pole just beyond the overflow. Feeding pellet little and often with large pellet on the hook, Steve caught steadily throughout the day catching 18 carp to 10lb.
MILTON LAKE
Providing some of the best fishing on the complex currently, Milton again saw some brilliant action this week with anglers reporting plenty of mixed bags to 70/80lb which included tench, crucian, roach, rudd, bream and perch. With pole and float tactics both continuing to work well, worm, pellet, paste and maggot all continue to catch with both the pole line and margins accounting for plenty of fish.
This weeks catches…
Philip Marsh had a cracking day mid week when he fished a small float to the margins on peg 24 catching 20 or so crucian to 2lb, a dozen tench to 4lb and simply loads of quality roach and rudd with a few perch and a couple of bream. Soft pellet was the winning bait on the day feeding loose pellet.
Whilst recent matches on Milton have generally been very good, last weeks weather did make for more difficult fishing on Sunday as Crawley AC found out. Still with a respectable 28lb 6oz of tench, crucian and a couple of small carp, Paul Harding won the day catching on both the pole and feeder from peg 2 on pellet. Second was Ray Smith with 25lb 10oz whilst third place went to Terry Archer with 19lb 8oz.
