WATER TEMPERATURES
Generally a very good week weather wise with a lot more sun, which helped water temperatures push back to 17.5 degree’s whilst oxygen levels hovered around 30%. Outlook for the week ahead is also looking good with the odd shower early week but lots of sun so perfect weather for a day’s fishing.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
A bit of a mixed week for sport as water temperatures crept back into the upper teens, which not surprisingly saw large numbers of fish and particularly the carp spawning heavily, which is positive as it now gets this out of the way.
With the fish spawning heavily, the carp sport was slower than normal although there were some good fish reported from both Temple and the Old Lake which included a 31lb 7oz mirror from the Old Lake along with the odd twenty and doubles. Unlike previous weeks, Temple did not see any big fish reported this week owing to the spawning with just a few twenties reported.
The general fishing has also been affected by the spawning, although the Old Lake has seen some great bream and tench bags reported again this week with bank and boat anglers again sharing the action. With pleasure bags to 80lb reported, a few good-sized fish have been caught with a number of tench reported topping 8lb.
Surprisingly, despite the spawning Bonds Lake fished pretty well this week with the small carp showing particularly well in bags to 90lb whilst Milton saw some good nets of tench and crucian taken which also included some cracking roach and rudd.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
With a huge improvement weather wise, the fishing was affected by the fish spawning this week, although anglers did managed some good fishing in between particularly from the tench with a number of fish topping 8lb reported in bags to 80lb.
With all areas producing some reasonable sport, boat anglers found sport particularly good down the jungle with a couple of boats reporting bags to well over 100lb although most anglers were happy with a dozen or so good sized tench and the odd carp and bream. The early pegs along the long bank also fished well with a number of anglers reporting some good tench action again with fish to 8lb reported.
With all methods working, the pole and waggler probably have the edge with maggot, caster, worm and soft pellet all catching well although it is always worth trying some of the larger baits such as corn, meat, mini boilies and pellet, which are taking the bigger fish.
This weeks catches
Regular Mike Bell from Crystal Palace feeder fished peg 34 catching 18 bream to 5lbs for appx 80lb. Mike fished hair rigged 8mm hard pellets catching steadily throughout the day.
Jason Earn also had a good day when he fished peg 29, catching tench to 6lb 2oz and a bonus 25lb carp, Jason caught on Icelandic Red boilies which he fished to the open water.
Simon Taylor and Ray Levitt had a day afloat mid week catching 20 or so tench to 8lb, a few bream and a couple of bonus carp. Fishing the left-hand bank of the jungle, the pair caught on large soft pellet, which they fished over maggot on stepped up float gear.
Young Owen Pitchley was delighted with his first ever tench which weighed just under 2lb. Owen fished with his dad Paul who also managed a 22lb 14oz Old Lake mirror during their session.
Wednesdays open match also saw some reasonable fishing with bream making up the weights. Colin Wood won the day from peg 29 catching 44lb of skimmers and bream on pole and pellet, second was Steve Gardener with 43lb of bream which was also taken on pole and pellet whilst third was Dave Pearson with 40lb which included a bonus 23lb 12oz carp caught on the pole.
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
With the carp spawning big time, it was no surprise to see the big fish catches of recent weeks slow right down on both Temple and the Old Lake. Saying that, the Old Lake did throw up a cracking 31lb 7oz mirror this weekend with good numbers of doubles also reported along with the odd twenty. As expected and following large numbers of big fish reported over the past few weeks, Temple fished a lot harder with just a handful of twenties reported this week.
Tactics and baits remain much the same as in previous weeks on both lakes, with all banks fishing pretty well on the Old Lake but particularly the top end of the long bank and island margins. Bait wise, whilst Icelandic Red still takes a lot of beating, all good quality baits are catching with Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies all worth a try as are the new Cotswold baits and the new Terry Hearn Red Fish boilies and Dynamites Spicy Tuna & Sweet Chilli boilies. The odd fish is also coming out on fake corn and pop ups as anglers start to imitate their success from Temple.
Tactics and baits also remain much the same on Temple with the margins still being favorite although the open water areas are also producing a few fish. With popped up “glugged corn” still taking a lot of fish, most good quality baits will work, so keep an open mind as to baits and areas.
This weeks catches
New SCM Gary Wheeler fishing his first on the Old Lake had a great start bagging a 31lb 7oz mirror. Fishing peg 24, Gary fished his Icelandic Red boilie topped with a white toffee pop up to the point of the island catching his fish during the night.
Mark Savage also managed a few fish from peg 57 on the island bank. Fishing KG1 baits to the back of the pads on the far bank, Mark had 4 fish to just under 20lb in quick succession before the fish started to spawn. Phil Goode also caught a couple on the Old Lake topped by a 17lb’er. Phil fished peg 49 catching on Icelandic Red.
Paul Pitchley managed a pretty 22lb mirror on Temple at the weekend, fishing peg 13, Paul caught on popped up corn over pellet. Another angler to catch was Vernon Ellis who also caught a 22lb Temple mirror, Vernon fished peg 10 catching on corn. Mike Saxby also caught over the weekend, this time a 22lb 8oz mirror from peg 9, Mike also caught on popped up corn.
BONDS LAKE
Despite the fish spawning, generally a good week on Bonds with plenty of carp showing in nets to 80lb plus. With all banks fishing well, the road and back bank are definitely worth a go with anglers reporting bags of up to 30 fish.
At this time of year all methods will work although float and pole are probably the most popular methods. Bait wise, maggot and soft pellet are catching well although mini boilies, corn and soft paste baits are also worth a go.
This weeks catches
Mark Salisbury had a good day mid week catching 20 odd carp for close to 80lb. Fishing peg 6, Mark fished a loaded waggler with large soft pellets on the hook catching over small 3mm pellet.
Recent matches on Bonds have also been pretty good with weights generally topping 60lb with the odd match seeing ton up bags. Last weeks Boxmoor match fished a little harder owing to the spawning with just shy of 40lb winning the day. Mick Taylor fishing peg 3 won the day with 38lb 12oz, Ken Green was second with 32lb on peg 20 and Simon Green was third with 27lb on peg 13.
MILTON LAKE
Surprisingly, Milton fished well this week despite the carp spawning with good numbers of tench and crucian showing from all pegs as well as quality roach and rudd. With the best of the action coming to pole and float tactics, maggot, caster and worm all catching well, with pellet, paste, corn and taking the better fish.
