THIS WEEK'S FISHING! (In brief) The bream fishing on the Old Lake has been fantastic, with one angler landing 21 up to a net handle creaking 8 lb 6 oz from peg 4 on the front bank on groundbait feeder. The fish took advantage of a period of settled mild weather to get their heads down and Harry Gibbs was in the right place on New Year's Day to take full advantage. Carp anglers who want to land a thirty usually head for Temple Lake, but Craig Hodgson managed it from the Old Lake with a superb looking common of 32 lb 8 oz in a three-fish catch on Pineapple pop-ups, showing the size and stamp of fish in there for those willing to seek them out. Another impressive Old Lake fish was the 16 lb 4 oz pike taken from the front bank on New Year's Eve by Edwin Herrnicht. And on Milton Lake the roach have been on a feeding spree, with a 25 lb net of quality fish on waggler and red maggot, and another mixed bag of 25 lb that included roach to 1 lb 8 oz. While Bonds continues to produce good catches, the best reported for the week being six double-figure carp and five smaller ones on cage feeder.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING Harry Gibbs had an amazing day's fishing on New Year's Day when he landed 21 bream up to 8 lb 6 oz in five hours from peg 4 on the front bank. Harry, from Mitcham, set up a groundbait feeder plugged with green Swim Stim and chopped worm and casters. Hook bait was three red maggots, and he cast this 40 yards out, catching at a rate of one every 15 minutes over the session. The mild weather has definitely brought the bream out of their winter slumbers, David Tidy, from Caterham having landed six good-sized fish and a few skimmers on cage feeder and double red maggot the week before. And with the mild spell set to continue, the fish will be taking full advantage of the chance to feed up before the next run of frosts arrives. Craig Hodgson fished an overnighter for carp and landed one of the lake's finest, a common of 32 lb 8 oz (see picture below), along with two other fish, of 16 lb and 18 lb.
32 lb 8 oz
A single Pineapple pop-up did the trick for the Woking angler, cast 60 yards out from peg 12. And best of the predator catches reported was a 16 lb 4 oz pike for season ticket holder Edwin Herrnicht. Edwin fished a short afternoon session with a roach deadbaits half way along the front bank on New Year's Eve.
Resident predator expert Eric Bailey is running monthly courses for anyone wanting to learn how to catch themselves a pike or zander, and Eric is also available for private tuition and can be contacted on 07802 877575 or through the website. He is also running predator matches for anglers to try to qualify for the Bury Hill pike final in March, the next one being this Sunday, January 15. Another way to learn a bit about how to get to grips with predator fishing at Old Bury Hill is to take a look at shop manager Russ Evans' contribution on the FishingMagic website, where he describes his recent success in the fishery's pike qualifier to reach the final on Sunday, March 11. http://www.fishingmagic.com/features/coarse_fishing/predator_fishing/15502-predator-fishing-%E2%80%93-a-very-different-match-for-the-%E2%80%98obsessed-angler%E2%80%99.html IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO HIRE TACKLE TO FISH WITH ON A VISIT TO THE LAKE, IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT THE HIRE TACKLE IS DESIGNED FOR GENERAL PLEASURE FISHING, RATHER THAN SPECIALIST CARP OR PREDATOR FISHING, WHICH WILL REQUIRE STRONGER TACKLE. ALSO, TO ALLOW ANGLERS TO FISH UNDISTURBED, BOATS ARE HIRED OUT FOR FISHING ONLY, AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE JUST FOR ROWING AROUND THE LAKE.
TEMPLE LAKE – CARP The carp are due for a mid-winter feed up, and anglers anticipating that and being in the right place at the right time will reap the rewards. Single bright, high-leakage baits are a good ploy at this time of year, or the fishery favourite Mainline Cell or Active-8 baits tipped with a piece of bright artificial corn, to create a 'hotspot' for fish to home in on.
PLEASE NOTE: LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
BONDS LAKE Simon Scott was inspired by the Winter Tips video featuring Russ Evans on YouTube and visited the lake using single pieces of corn on size 16 hooks alongside a cage feeder. The Plumpton angler's catch of six double-figure carp and five smaller ones, from peg 8, was the best reported to us for this week. Brian Williams managed four commons up to 9 lb and three mirror carp, the best going just over 12 lb. Brian, from Guildford, fished peg 7 with a small straight lead, which he cast into the bay near to the margins and fished small white mini boilies. Terry Somersby noticed a few carp moving in the margins and casting his corn hook bait at peg 9 to within inches of the reeds he landed nine carp up to 8 lb. Richmond angler Terry caught six mirrors and three commons, tipping his corn bait with three red maggots on a size 16 hook and using Bait-Tech Special G groundbait.
MILTON LAKE The roach fishing in winter on Milton Lake has been attracting anglers who love the fact that you can put together a net of prime redfins without having your swim blitzed by marauding carp. And this week Gerry Toms showed what can be achieved when he put together a catch of 25 lb of quality roach, fishing waggler and single red maggot over loose feed. The Reigate angler was on peg 23 and also landed two tench. David Brice went for pole tactics at eight metres, from peg 16, and had a superb day's fishing, finishing with a mixed net weighing 25 lb. The Crawley angler had roach up to 1 lb 8 oz, crucians and a tench, all on single caster. Guy Walters was hoping to catch perch when he set up with pieces of worm and dark groundbait with chopped worm but it was quality roach and a few bream to 3 lb that moved into his swim. Horsham angler Guy set up on peg 20 fishing ten metres of pole into open water and towards the end of the session he switched to the margins, where he had been feeding some chopped worm and got the perch he was after, at 2 lb 9 oz, followed by another of just under 2 lb. And Tim Booth, from Kent, had a successful day on peg 3, landing several big roach and a perch of 2 lb 2 oz on a small waggler in the margins and maggots or worm.
