WATER TEMPERATURES
Cold weather has put some pressure on water temperatures this week, which have dropped very slightly to 9.4 degree’s, oxygen levels however remained constant at around 30%.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
Whilst the drop in temperatures, have generally slowed the fishing a little, all lakes have fished pretty well this week with some good catches reported, particularly on the Old Lake, which has again seen some large bags of tench and bream reported. The carp fishing on the Old Lake has also been pretty lively with more multi bags taken, which has again included fish to 20lb plus. Staying with the carp, Temple threw up another two thirties this week, although the fishing has generally been a little harder.
The two smaller lakes have also fished pretty well this week despite the drop in water temperatures with Milton fishing very well for mixed bags of tench, roach, rudd and perch with even the odd crucian showing. Bonds Lake has also seen some activity with bags of carp to 10lb being caught in nets to 50lb.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Yet again the tench and bream have shown in good numbers this week with bags to 80lb reported from both the front and long banks. Although the best of the fishing is still from the mid and deep water pegs, the shallow water at the end of the front bank has also been producing a few fish as has the jungle to the boat anglers.
Whilst tactics remain much the same as previous weeks, pole, feeder and float are all working with maggot, caster, worm and pellet all working particularly well, whilst larger baits such as corn and soft pellet are taking the bigger fish.
This weeks catches
Ross Hargreave’s from Guildford had a good day when he fished peg 27 along the long bank catching 9 bream and 5 tench fishing pole and red maggot. Regular Haydon Woods had yet another crack at the tench and bream this week catching 20 bream to 5lb from peg 30. Haydon fished a 13m pole cupping in Swim Stim green 3mm pellet whilst also feeding loose maggot over double red maggot on the hook.
Dave Walker from Carshalton also had a great day catching 12 bream to 4lb and 11 tench to 4lb 8oz. Dave fished swim 11 catching on the pole and pellet.
Recent matches have also been good with weights of up to 80lb reported. Harrow School fished pegs 6 to 24 along the front bank last Sunday with all anglers getting amongst the fish. Kevin Wigglesworth won the day with a good net of tench and bream weighing 41lb 4oz. Fishing peg 19, Kevin alternated between the pole and feeder fishing red maggot on the hook whilst loose feeding pellet. Second was Dave Dawsett who caught 36lb 8oz on the pole whilst Don Gray was third with 35lb 14oz, which he caught on the feeder.
Bury Hill Open
With all eyes fixed on the up and coming ‘sold out’ Bury Hill 2 day festival in a couple of weeks time (7th and 8th April). The fishery held its first open match of the year on the Old Lake where the Front Bank hosted 19 anglers all hoping to get amongst some of the tench which have been making up some large catches recently. However with a heavy downpour the night before and gusty winds throughout the day of the event, presentation on the pole was impossible and most had no option but to stay on the tip rod where Robbie Taylor on peg 13 did it best winning the match with 32-2-0 of bream and skimmers on hair rigged corn with groundbait feeder. On peg 15 local rod Ray Parker fished similar tactics and was only one fish away from winning the match after scaling 31-8-0. Geoff Vallence again used tip and feeder tactics to take 3rd spot form peg 8 after putting 28-14-0.
Match summary:
Everyone landed a few fish despite the gusty winds which cracked the odd pole section and it was good to see a few tench come out along with some sizeable bream at the weigh in.
Result:
1st Robbie Taylor 32.-2-0
2nd Ray Parker 31-8-0
3rd Geoff Vallence 28-14-0
4th John Brice 22-12-0
5th Barry Upperton 19-12-0
6th Tony Barthomlew 19-6-0
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE - CARP
Following the run of thirties last week, this week has so far seen two more thirties reported as well as the odd twenty despite colder conditions. With fish showing from all around the lake, it was the mid and deep water areas that produced the fish from both the margins and channels. Bait wise is pretty much anyone’s guess with fish coming out on anything and everything although glugged corn and popped up boilies both seem to be catching.
The Old Lake has probably faired better this week with a number of anglers reporting multi bags which included three twenties to one angler. With the fish well spread, catches are coming from both the island margins and mid water swims. Whilst pretty much any good quality baits will catch, good old Icelandic Red, Fusion, KG1 and Cell boilies are all worth a go as are some of the new Cotswold baits and the new Terry Hearn Red Fish boilies and Dynamites Spicy Tuna & Sweet Chilli boilies.
This weeks catches
Regular Robin Ellis was one of the lucky anglers to bag a thirty this week. Fishing swim 4 along the road bank on Wednesday, Robin fished the now famous glugged corn with a cream pop up to the island margins catching a 30lb 12oz mirror just as he was about to pack up.
The other angler to bag a thirty was Glen Baker who caught a brace of commons weighing 32lb 4oz and 21lb. Glen fished swim 9 catching on a Pro Mainline Pineapple boilie, which he sprayed with Pineapple glug. Both of Glen’s fish came from the margins, the thirty from the bank margin, and the smaller common from the island margin. Glen also lost a good fish.

It will come as no surprise to anyone that Sean Howard managed yet another fish this week, this time a 27lb 2oz mirror which he caught from swim 5 on – what for it – glugged corn.
Turning to the Old Lake, Adam Porter from Sutton Surrey had a good session at the weekend catching 7 carp which included three twenties, a common weighing 22lb 8oz and mirrors weighing 21lb 8oz and 21lb 2oz as well as four doubles. Adam fished peg 74 catching on Carp Company 18mm Icelandic boilies, which he fished over a mix of halibut pellets and chopped boilies. William Stevens also had a busy time early week catching 8 carp to 21lb. William fished peg 33 catching on Dynamites new Red Fish baits which he fished close to the island over free offerings.
Please Note!
Temple Lake can only be fished by Specimen Carp Members who are also able to night fish the Old Lake. With membership numbers strictly limited to anglers with some experience of catching bigger fish, membership includes Old Bury Hill Lake and Temple Lake, our new specimen carp lake. Following recent stockings, Temple currently holds just under a 100 fish to upper thirties, which now includes 35 known thirties, the average size is close to 29lb. To date there has been a waiting list to join, however there is a small number of places available for 2009 which will be available on a first come first served basis, anyone interested should contact David or Jane on 01306 877540, or download an application form from our website.

BONDS LAKE
Despite dropping water temperatures, Bonds fished well again this week with a number of 50/80lb nets reported. With both float and feeder tactics working and smaller baits such as maggot catching well, the best of the sport has been coming from the road bank and back banks.
This weeks catches
Richard Mills had a cracking day in the week on Bonds catching 27 carp to 8lb. Richard fished a loaded waggler 3 rods out catching all his fish on large soft pellets over loose feed.
MILTON LAKE
Following the trend of recent weeks, Milton Lake also fished well this week with nets to 50lb plus reported from both the pleasure angler and matchmen. With weights being made up of quality roach, rudd and perch, the tench and crucian are also starting to show. the best of the action has been coming to pole and feeder tactics with maggot, caster and worm all catching, although pellet, paste and corn are also starting to take fish.
This weeks catches
Last weekends EDF AC match fished a little harder than previous matches owing to the weather with only the roach, rudd and perch showing in any numbers although the odd tench was caught. 1st place went to Mark Funnell who weighed in 21lb 7oz from peg 3 caught on pole caster, maggot and worm, 2nd was John Robinson with 17lb 8oz taken on similar tactics and bait and 3rd was Peter Baldwin with 13lb 8oz which was also taken on pole and maggot.
