This winter’s huge stocking program is now complete following the dredging of both Bonds and Milton Lakes. Old Bury Hill Lake has seen a large number of big tench stocked as well as a good number of bream and skimmers. Milton Lake has seen most of the carp removed which we have replaced with 500 small tench, over 3500 crucian and simply loads of quality roach, rudd, some gigantic perch as well as a few bream and skimmers. Bonds Lake has also seen a further stocking of small carp from Milton as well as a few roach, rudd and skimmers.
WATER TEMPERATURES
A swing back to colder wetter weather this week saw water temperatures drop sharply to 12.1 degree’s, a drop of 3 degree’s on the week whilst oxygen levels stayed consistent at 50%.
Outlook for the week ahead is remaining cooler with northerly winds dominating although dryer weather is set to return.
THIS WEEKS FISHING!
Despite a small drop in water temperature through the week, the fishing remained pretty good with anglers still catching good numbers of fish on all lakes with quite a few 100lb bags reported!
As water temperatures hit a critical point at the end of last week, the run of big carp on both Temple and the Old Lake continued, with 12 thirties and numerous twenties reported from Temple and simply loads of doubles and twenties from the Old Lake with both day and session anglers catching.
The general fishing also crept up a notch with some big bags of bream, tench and skimmers reported on the Old Lake and yet more superb catches of crucian and tench from Milton Lake which again included excellent catches of roach, rudd and perch. Bonds Lake also saw some good catches again this week with anglers catching plenty of carp to 10lb.
OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Despite a much colder week, the Old Lake continued to provide plenty of sport with bream, tench and skimmers showing in good numbers from all areas. With both bank and boat anglers reporting bags to over 100lb, the mid and shallow water areas continued to be the most productive with the middle and early pegs on the front bank and the top end pegs on the long bank all fishing particularly well. Although the deeper water swims also saw some reasonable fishing as the week wore on.
With all methods catching, the pole still seems to be the most popular choice although float and feeder are also catching well with red maggot and pellet being the best baits although as water temperatures continue to increase, larger baits such as paste, corn and mini boilies will all start to catch a few better fish.
With good numbers of tench already in the jungle and with more fish joining them as water temperatures increase, expect some brilliant boat sport over the coming weeks with anglers already reporting bags close to 100lb.
This week catches…
Having read last weeks fishery report, Alex Tanner decided to try his luck for the bream on the Old Lake and following a quick chat with Russ in the tackle shop was soon tackling up his loaded waggler on peg 11. Fishing 6 rods out with large pellet and double maggot as hookbait whilst loose feeding maggot and pellet little and often, Alex was soon into the fish with three 5lb plus bream netted in his first 40 minutes or so. As the day went on so sport increased with Alex ending his session with 23 bream to 6lb, 4 tench to 5lb and 15lb or so of skimmers for a good ton up haul.
To bag your first ton of bream, talk to Russ or Ken in the shop who will be more than happy to point you in the right direction
OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
Despite the change in the weather, another brilliant week for the carpers with Temple producing loads of twenties and 12 thirties whilst sport on the Old Lake saw plenty of fish caught which again included a good number of twenties.
With a thirty or two coming out almost daily now, sport on Temple hit a crescendo this week with 8 thirties caught over last weekend with a further 4 or so being caught during the week. With fish showing from all areas, most good quality baits are working with a variety of baits working including boilies, stringers, pop ups and corn all accounting for a fish or two. However, there is definitely a move away from corn with boilies and other baits starting to work better.
PLEASE NOTE: WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
The old lake also saw yet more bumper action this week with a good number of twenties reported and simply loads of doubles. Whilst the shallow and mid water swims continue to produce well the deep water pegs have definitely seen an increase in sport due to the colder weather. Whilst tactics and baits remaining much the same as in recent weeks with ledger and PVA bags clearly the way to go, pretty well any good bait will work at the present time although the old favorites such as Icelandic Red, Cell, Fusion, Maple 8 and KG1 will all give you an edge! It is also worth trying one or two of the new boilies hitting the market and particularly the much talked about Marukyu bait range, which includes a new scientifically produced range of boilies which a few anglers have started to catch on.
Boat anglers have also been catching a few carp from the jungle with standard boat tactics consisting of float, boilies and large pellet working well.
This week catches…
Leading the field on Temple this week was Lewis Gane who banked 4 cracking fish, which included one of Temples most sort after residents, The Ghost which weighed an impressive 37lb 11oz. With a brace of thirties included in his catch, Lewis ended his session with the ghost at 37lb 11oz and mirrors weighing 30lb 6oz, 26lb 4oz and 20lb 2oz. Fishing swim 3, all of Lewis’s fish fell to Cell boilies which he fished with pva bags filled with broken Cell baits which he fished to the island margins.
Another angler making a name for himself on Temple this year is Craig Pearman who added a further three BIG Temple fish to his already impressive tally for the year, a 34lb 4oz Italian, and mirrors weighing 33lb 4oz and 29lb 11oz. Fishing swim 13 on the back bank, Craig caught the 34 and 29 on a hi-vis multi coloured pop up which he fished tight to the island margins catching the 33 on plastic corn also from the island margins.
Another angler to bag a thirty at the weekend was Michael Smith who on his first visit to Temple netted a stunning 34lb common from swim 7 on a fruit boilie.
With more Temple thirties under his belt than any other angler, Temple guru Sean Howard finally got amongst the thirties this week catching his first two thirties of the year, a 32lb 11oz common and 31lb 9oz mirror known as “The Thief” as well as two smaller fish, a 28lb 10oz common and stunning 20lb 10oz Ghost. Fishing swim 1, Sean caught from both the island margins and open water on CC Moores N-Gage 15mm boilies, which he fished over a few free offerings with the exception of the ghost, which he caught on glugged corn from swim 14.
Another Temple regular to catch this week was Vernon Ellis who had a busy session catching three Temple beauties, a 32lb 8oz common, 28lb 8oz mirror and 27lb 8oz common early week which he followed up with another thirty, this time a 30lb 12oz mirror and 22lb 7oz mirror. Fishing swim 12 on both sessions, Vernon caught all his fish on Plastic Fantastic corn, which he fished to both the open water and island margins catching the 30lb mirror on a homemade boilie.
Adding to his recently success, Dave Povey managed another two thirties this week, a stunning 35lb common and 30lb 8oz mirror which were both caught from the island margins off swim 4. Fishing Cell boilies and a small PVA bag filled with pellet and free offerings, David has now caught three Temple thirties this year.
Other anglers to catch this week were Paul Pitchley who caught a nice 25lb common from swim 15 on Mainlines new Grange boilie. Chris Trew also deserves a mention catching his first Temple fish following weeks of effort, a cracking 24lb 4oz mirror, which he caught from swim 2 on Cell boilies, which he fished to the open water.
Turning to the Old Lake, Gavin Campbell had a very busy session at the weekend catching 14 fish which included three twenties, a 23lb 4oz common and mirrors weighing 22lb 8oz and 20lb 3oz. Fishing peg 1, Gavin caught on Banana Nut Crunch over pellet from the far bank.
Chris Moxon also had a day catching a 27lb mirror from peg 3 on a Cell boilie whilst Keith Sheeky also from Watford managed 4 fish, the best a 20lb mirror, which he also caught on Cell baits.
Travelling all the way down from Leicester to fish a tuition day with Chris Malby, Matthew (sorry no surname) caught not one but two PB’s in the shape of a 12lb common and 18lb 8oz mirror also catching a bonus 5lb 8oz tench. Fishing peg 2, Matthew caught all his fish on Icelandic Red boilies.
Catching 11 fish last week, see below pictures of Dales three twenties.
BONDS LAKE
Despite a bit of a miserable week, anglers on Bonds continued to report some reasonable catches with nets to 60lb being pretty common with the odd angler reporting bags to 100lb plus. With pole, float and feeder tactics all working, both the island and bank margins are the areas to concentrate on with maggot and pellet working best, although paste, corn and meat are also starting to catch.
This weeks catches…
Steve Hall had a good day on Bonds this week catching 14 carp to 8lb for a good 80lb bag. Fishing a small feeder to the island margins, Steve fished double red maggot over groundbait and pellet.
Young Tom Elson also had a good day on Bonds catching a new PB in the shape of an 8lb common, which Tom caught on a Dynamite pellet and groundbait feeder.
MILTON LAKE
Another brilliant week on Milton with more big bags of tench and crucian reported again this week as well as some cracking big roach, rudd and perch. With all areas producing, float and pole tactics are definitely the way to go, with pellet, paste and maggot catching on the pole line and inner margins.
This weeks catches…
Kevin Mahoney had a brilliant day on Milton in the week catching 30 crucian and 12 tench for well over 80lb. Fishing pole and pellet, Kevin caught steadily throughout the day.
Recent club matches on Milton have also fished well as Swallowfield found out last weekend. Despite some pretty grim weather, all anglers caught with S Fairbrother winning the day netting 39lb 13oz of tench, crucian and roach, which he caught on pole and maggot. Second place went to K Randal who also caught tench, crucian and roach on the pole and maggot weighing in 26lb 5oz pushing J Sitch into third place who weighed in 25lb 4oz who also caught tench, crucian and roach.
