THIS WEEK'S FISHING! (In brief)

A frost-free week is in prospect, with temperatures above the seasonal norm and making it into double figures.
Last week's frosty start led to the Old Lake being frozen over, but the ice soon thawed with the arrival of milder weather, and many who ventured out were rewarded.
Most impressive catch of the week fell to 11-year-old Nick Thorn, from Guildford, who was fishing with his brother Ollie on an afternoon ticket and landed his first-ever zander, at 11 lb 4 oz (see picture below).

11 lb 4 oz

Pike showed their willingness to feed in the coldest weather, with five caught to jigging tactics by a party of anglers in two boats, and three pike from the front bank for Mick Cove on small baits intended for zander.
Milton Lake produced a catch of nine quality roach up to 1 lb 4 oz on short pole and maggot for Lee Phillips, and another nine quality fish for Kevin Pack.
And the best bag reported from Bonds was eight carp up to 9 lb on groundbait feeder by Bob Wood.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
Fishing brothers Ollie and Nick Thorn had a session to remember last Saturday when they came for the afternoon in search of predators.
Ollie, who is 15 and has attended predator courses at Bury Hill, has caught zander to 9 lb, and was looking for his first double.
Nick, who is 11, was hoping to land his first zander, and he set up alongside his elder brother on peg 26.
Condition were ideal for zander, it being mild and windy, which put extra colour in the water, but it still took until close to packing up time for the zander to start moving around.
Nick decided to give his small sardine tail on a single size 8 Korum hook to a 1 oz running lead a twitch to see if anything was watching it, and as soon as he did the line started running out and he was into a good fish.
Tackle shop manager Russ Evans was on hand with the landing net and thought at first the fish would be about 8 lb, but the hard fight suggested something bigger, and when it had been landed and unhooked it took the scales down to 11 lb 4 oz.
Russ said: "I was very impressed with how the lads took the time out to spend a few hours on the bank whilst many anglers decided to stay at home.
"Nick played the fish with great skill, and it was so heavy and fighting fit I had to help him pose for his photo as Ollie snapped away.
"The best thing of all was Ollie was pleased for his brother even though it beat his own PB by 2 lb."
Other anglers enjoyed multiple catches of pike as the water took a while to lose its chill after the cold snap.
Sean Duncan and his fishing friends took two boats out during the week and were rewarded with five pike up to 7 lb on jigging tactics using Fox Rage soft bait lures and Spin Jigs.
Mick Cove, from Oxted, who landed an 8 lb 6 oz zander last October, caught three pike and a small zander fishing small baits from the front bank in midweek.
And Keith Stuart landed his first ever zander on his first trip to Bury Hill for 20 years. The fish weighed 6 lb 4 oz and took a small roach deadbait on light leger tackle at peg 14.

Resident predator expert Eric Bailey is running monthly courses for anyone wanting to learn how to catch themselves a pike or zander, and Eric is also available for private tuition and can be contacted on 07802 877575 or through the website.
He is also running predator matches for anglers to try to qualify for the Bury Hill pike final in March, the next one being this Sunday, January 29.

Another way to learn a bit about how to get to grips with predator fishing at Old Bury Hill is to take a look at shop manager Russ Evans' contribution on the FishingMagic website, where he describes his recent success in the fishery's pike qualifier to reach the final on Sunday, March 11.

And if you want to learn more about how to make the most of your time on the bank, Russ is hosting a new angling show on Ridge Radio on the internet on Wednesday evenings for two hours from 9pm.
It's called The Obsessed Angler and you can email in questions to Russ as well as hear him discuss the latest angling news.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO HIRE TACKLE TO FISH WITH ON A VISIT TO THE LAKE, IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT THE HIRE TACKLE IS DESIGNED FOR GENERAL PLEASURE FISHING, RATHER THAN SPECIALIST CARP OR PREDATOR FISHING, WHICH WILL REQUIRE STRONGER TACKLE.
ALSO, TO ALLOW ANGLERS TO FISH UNDISTURBED, BOATS ARE HIRED OUT FOR FISHING ONLY, AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE JUST FOR ROWING AROUND THE LAKE.

TEMPLE LAKE – CARP
The icy weather at the start of last week brought sport to a standstill on Temple, but now that we have entered a milder period with a bit more wind, fish will be moving around more.
With the carp now at their prime winter weight and condition, the chances of a PB are high, and you will have the bonus of a very lively tussle with a fish that is in the peak of condition.

PLEASE NOTE: LEAD CORE IS BANNED ON BOTH TEMPLE AND THE OLD LAKE. PLEASE SEE RUSS OR KEN IN THE SHOP FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

BONDS LAKE
For the best chance of regular action throughout the day at this time of year, Bonds takes some beating. Best catch reported this week was eight carp up to 9 lb for Bob Wood, who fished a light groundbait feeder and hard pellet.
Bob lassoed his hard pellets to a size 16 hook and cast to the island margins, catching three or four fish from peg 8 before moving to peg 5 to get a bit of sun on his back on a cold but very rewarding day.

For anyone thinking of having a day on Bonds and wanting to make the most of the fishing, it would be well worth a look at:

MILTON LAKE
Roach are the prime target for anglers on Milton in the cooler weather, and plenty of anglers have been impressed with their size.
Lee Phillips, from Sutton, fished a short session either side of midday and tempted nine quality roach up to 1 lb 4 oz and some rudd between 8-12 oz on short pole and red maggot close in to his left, near some margin reeds, at peg 26.
Kevin Pack, from Dartford, landed nine quality fish including big roach and tench on pole and caster over chopped worm and maggot at peg 14.
And Steve Delia had an enjoyable session catching roach, rudd and a few tench on pole and maggot at peg 13, and is planning a return visit to fish a waggler.

Bury Hill shop manager Russ Evans knows the lakes at Bury Hill better than most, and over the years has written many articles as well as producing his own series of DVD’s to help you improve your catches, which are sold in the tackle shop.
Below is a link to hundreds of articles written by Russ and others that will help you increase your catches.
